The First Presbyterian Church, 211 N. Division, was dedicated in 1857 – the year Polo was founded.
The congregation dates back to 1848, and it left an indelible mark on the town’s history. First Presbyterian became known as the “abolitionist church,” because the church would not let slave owners or advocates of slavery join its congregation.
The congregation also was strongly opposed to the making and selling of alcohol, setting the tone for Polo becoming a dry town for 6 decades before the onset of prohibition in 1920.
The big brass bell that rang for newly married couples was first used in 1860, to celebrate the election of Abraham Lincoln as the nation’s 16th president.

In the days before dedicated engines worked the Gatwick Express services any 73/1 could work the diagrams and here in 1986 I did a return trip to pick up a few engines for haulage.
The practice at the time was to carry a disk with the diagram number on it, presumably to aid service staff as the train were cleaned on the go.
73127 departs Gatwick for London in 23rd February 1986 on circuit 3.
She is your mirror, shining back at you with a world of possibilities. She is your witness, who sees you at your worst and best, and loves you anyway. She is your partner in crime, your midnight companion, someone who knows when you are smiling, even in the dark. She is your teacher, your defense attorney, your personal press agent, even your shrink. Some days, she's the reason you wish you were an only child. -Barbara Alpert
I was so upset last night. And I love that my sister is always willing to be there for me. Even when it's just to vent. She does make me miss being a kid because we had the greatest time growing up together. Last night I found out that just recently tulips have become her favorite flowers in the whole wide world. So this one is specially for her. These are flowers I bought to put in a vase. Gorgeous, right?
Sisters are the best. I love you, Karen!
Happy Nifty Fifty Friday, everyone!
ps. I promise this is the last "tulip" flower shot. For now. haha!

God, I’m worse than a teenage girl with all these hormonal hissy fits. I don’t expect anyone to care about this or to read this brainfart, but it kinda helps me put things in perspective and work things out.
I think I’m having a love hate relationship with flickr and photography at the mo. I’m calling on Flickr to employ a therapist that could help me through my photography journey and through the fuked up world that is flickrland....,then again I could just take my head out my of ass and do some thinking for myself.
I seem to have come to a stumbling block with my photography and think I might be blaming it on flickr to a certain extent. In fact I guess i’m just frustrated and disappointed in myself. I feel like I’ve experienced a speeded up version of photography learning over the past 14 months. You get to a stage quite quickly of being able to compose a shot, to expose it how you want and actually take shots that your mates go... ‘Wow!’ or ‘You are really good’.... but it’s a bit of scam really, It isn’t hard to do that. I know I could go out to take powerful, appealing images.... but i don’t want to. I want to play, experiment and express myself in ways that aren’t about producing pretty or perfect pictures that impress people. But it isn’t that easy, i get sucked in to it and flickr sometimes doesn’t’ help that. I have so many projects and ideas that I would have given a go a year ago, but now there is some sort of expectation on me (only put on by myself, i guess) I find it harder to get out there and do it. Procrastination strikes then the all too familiar feelings of frustration and resentment kick in. i want to get rid of that....
Anycheese, just feel like I had so much excitement at the beginning, I got wowed out that it was possible to capture moment, a mood, to express a feeling or even just capture a pretty scene. I really didn’t care whether others would like it or whether it was any good or not. I want that freedom and awe back. I’m going back to basics. I;m going to take shots for whatever reason i want, maybe just coz it’s pretty, maybe because it has a deep psychological meaning behind it or maybe just because it makes me smile.
Although Flickr can sometimes exacerbate the over inflation of one’s own talent & ability and encourage one down the path of least resistance of popularity and conformity, it does has its major plus points. Not just the incredible photography that does crop up... but the inspiration of people that shoot what they love, for themselves, no matter how others perceive it. I respect those that do that. I’m also astonished at how i really do feel a friendship to some people on here that i;ve never even met, and genuinely feel a care and interest for.... and that gives this place quite a unique, if not scary, appeal.
*Thanks for the comments and flickrmails recently, I really have appreciated it.

All over the capital, the Arirang adverts (« Grand mass gymnastic and artistic performance », « Welcome to Pyongyang » and so on) warn the profane…Between August and October, takes place one of the biggest and most impressive performances in the world. The tone is set : even the Beijing Olympics ceremony can’t compete with the mass games organized by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The show is held several times a week and welcomes tourists from all over the World, including the US, in one of the most isolated and despised country on earth. The well-called « mass games » are designed to emphasize group dynamics rather than individual performances as the supreme emblem of communism. Prepared by hundred of thousands performers all along the year, after their classes for the youngest of them, they are entirely dedicated to the NK’s leader Kim Jong Il and his deceased father Kim Il Sung, considered as the « Eternal president » and « sun of the 21st century »…
In the surroundings of Pyongyang's May Day giant Stadium, two girls are running to perform for the Arirang show. They are already dressed in their gymnastic outfits, as well as some 100,000 others who participate to the performance. They all come to honour their self-proclaimed « dear leader » Kim Jong Il, after a very hard and gruelling training, since their earliest age. Yet, it has been many years that Kim Jong Il has not shown up, formally for business reasons. But officials now admit the western medias’ assertions of illness. Anyways, Kim Jong Il or not, the mass games are held every year in Pyongyang, as a means for the regime to show to the entire world the country’s strength and good shape. To reach this sole purpose, not less than 100,000 people are involved in a choreographed show of simultaneous dancing and gymnastics. Many symbols are displayed by thousands of trained athlets, whether they are adults or even children. Hand over their heart, the young pupils sing in chorus "We are the happiest children in the world", one of the famous propaganda songs in North Korea. Many dancers make movements either with ribbons or colourful flowers named « kimjonglias » after the leader Kim Jong Il. All along the show, a live band plays a ceremonious music.
On the background, some 20,000 young koreans sit on the terraces, facing the spectators. They flip coloured cards at a high speed to form a fresco of animated and detailed images, changing from one to another. Each time they turn the page to create a new giant picture, they cry out. It creates a awe-inspiring atmosphere, as the shout is mixed with the noise of thousands of pages turned at the same moment. The figures are stunning : to compose these images, 2000 children are needed to make only one soldier, 20,000 for a north korean flag. Hiding a much more grim reality, the panels represent Pyongyang enlightened by night, wheat fields ready for harvest, scientists at work, atoms as symbols of the nuclear bomb and others for the reunification of two Koreas. One of the North Korea’s myths (history according to them) is recounted by the means of a huge image made by thousands of children. It represents the two pistols reportedly used by Kim Il Sung, when he founded the Anti-Japanese People’s Guerrilla Army in 1932. When the pistols appear, the audience applauses loudly. Among them, many soldiers attend the show as the ultimate award after years of good and faithful service. The thousands and thousands of boys and girls involved create a giant mass movement in the stadium which leaves the public stunned. These talented performers are used to that kind of performance: in North Korea they have to dance, sing, jump and spin around as many times as there are celebrations, always in praise of their leaders. There are mainly two sorts of shows. The first one is the classical artistic show, named "Arirang" after the famous korean folk song (whose story sometimes changes, but most often recounts the legend of a disappointed woman who hopes that her lover will return to her –metaphor of the break-up with South Korea). The second one is a more political show, which was untitled in 2008 "Prosper our country" and intended to show the country’s greatest achievements and its struggle against the foreign oppressors.
The show continues in the same way for one hour. Thereafter, the thousands of people present vanish in the dark and silent streets of Pyongyang, which contrast with the flood of lights and music in the stadium. Within the space of a few hours, it gives us a a strange feeling, between the real and unreal, of another universe both terrifying and fantastic.

Dedicated to my friend:
After a while you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
and you learn
that love doesn’t mean leaning
and company doesn’t always mean security.
And you begin to learn
that kisses aren’t contracts
and presents aren’t promises
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of (wo)man, not the grief of a child
and you learn
to build all your roads on today
because tomorrow’s ground is
too uncertain for plans
and futures have a way of falling down
in mid-flight.
After a while you learn
that even sunshine burns
if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone
to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure
you really are strong
you really do have worth
and you learn
and you learn
with every goodbye, you learn…

The Armed Forces Memorial is a national memorial in the United Kingdom, dedicated to the 16,000 servicemen and women of the British Armed Forces killed on duty or through terrorist action since after the Second World War. It is within the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
The creation of a national memorial for members of the Armed Forces killed on duty was announced by the Secretary of State for Defence in a statement in the House of Commons on 10 November 2000, to be funded by public subscription.
An international competition was held for the design of the Memorial, which was won by Liam O'Connor Architects and Planning Consultants, with Ian Rank-Broadley, Sculptor. The project design team consisted of Liam O'Connor (architect), Christopher Barrett (project manager), Alan Baxter & Associates (structural & civil engineers), Christina Godiksen, Robert Rhodes, and Daniel Benson. Liam O'Connor also designed the Commonwealth Memorial Gates on Constitution Hill in London. Ian Rank-Broadley conceived and executed the sculpture of the Memorial. He earlier sculpted the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II which has appeared on coins in the UK and Commonwealth coins since 1998. The letter cutting was done by Richard Kindersley. The design of the Memorial was officially unveiled at the Imperial War Museum, London on 6 April 2005.
The Memorial was officially dedicated on 12 October 2007 in a ceremony presided by Queen Elizabeth II and attended by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams. It was opened to the public on 29 October 2007. At the unveiling Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales said:
"The magnificence of this new memorial will, at long last, provide a fitting recognition for all those killed on duty since the end of the Second World War. It does not differentiate between those killed in the heat of battle or on a training exercise, by terrorist action or on peace-keeping missions."

We all got flu: my Mom, my daughter, and I.
The joke of the week is: the new flu is contagious, and you can catch it over the phone!
We all live hundreds miles from each other.
I cannot go outside: I still have a fever. The only props I was able to come up with: a candle, some flowers, and a bottle of cognac: somebody brought it as a housewarming gift 4 years ago when I moved to new apartment.
Screw the flu! The birthday party is in: flowers, candles, and cognac!
Happy Birthday, Mom!
Thank you to Rachel and Andy for enabling me to become a Great Uncle to Anabelle who was born at 1.30am this morning. Anabelle weighed in at 6lb 10oz.

The tower is dedicated to Saint Agatha. St Agatha was a Christian martyr who was revered as a symbol of strength against invasion.
It was restored in 2020 and the restoration was carried out in collaboration with Din l- Art Ħelwa (The National Trust of Malta) and formed part of the project known as ‘ The Northern Coastal Watch’.
A few snippets from dinlarthelwa.org/heritage-sites/managed-heritage-sites/st...
"The tower is spectacularly situated at l-Aħrax tal-Mellieħa at the crest of the Marfa ridge and overlooking Għadira Bay, the nature reserve and bird sanctuary, and has commanding views over the straits between Comino and Gozo. Like many other towers it was probably built in the same site where il-maħras maintained a watch- post. This watch-post is listed in the Militia List of 1417. The site offered a good view of any enemy fleets entering Mellieħa Bay and was thus able to maintain a good communication network between Gozo, Comino and Mdina. From the rear end of the roof the soldiers manning the tower had a good view of Santa Marija Tower on Comino with the Comino Battery to the right. The White Tower at L-Armier and Lippija Tower above Ġnejna Bay can also be seen from the roof. These watch towers used to keep guard over the numerous sandy beaches around this end of the island."
St Agatha "was a Christian martyr who was venerated as a symbol of strength against invasion and the plague in both Sicily and Malta. This name was already decided by the Order before the tower was completed. Later on it became known as the Red Tower, Torre Rossa, because it was painted red, possibly to help sentinels in Naxxar and Mdina recognise it easily. However it is also possible that it earned its name from the colour of the stone from which it was constructed, which is reddish. "
"A water cistern was built under the tower and is accessible via a removable slab on the right as one enters the first vaulted room. It can contain about 53,000 litres of water and measures about 7.8m in length, 2.6m in height and 2.6m in width. Water is collected from the roof and runs via a channel off the roof, down pipes in the outside wall and then into the cistern under the floor. This provided water to the soldiers serving in the tower."
"In June 1722 the Congregation of War instructed that St Agatha Tower be armed with five guns and be manned by a garrison of four men. The tower became an essential part of the defence of the island. There had to be a resident bombardier and three militia men. In fact the Congregation of war gave instructions that the only two towers on the island which had to be denied to the enemy by offering as much resistance as possible were St Lucian tower in Marsaxlokk, built in 1610, and St Agatha’s tower. They were to be garrisoned with 40 and 30 men respectively under the command of a sergeant who was to be chosen by the area commander. These towers were supplied with enough ammunition and food to withstand a siege of 40 days and the Order reserved 400 extra muskets with bayonets in case of need. Unlike many other smaller towers, the Red Tower remained constantly armed with men and ammunition. "
