Jan van de Velde II

The development of landscape (natural scenery without biblical or historical narrative content) as an independent genre in 16th-century Europe was, in part, dependant upon illustrated calendars in medieval manuscripts. Each month was decorated with a sign from the zodiac and a seasonal labour (The Labours of the Month), representing the passage of both astrological time and terrestrial time.

It's officially December! ♥

One of my favorite months of the year.

I took this for the photo advent calendar project that myself and a bunch of other photographers are doing, where we are each assigned one day in December to share a photo that represents the holidays =).

So I picked December 1st (likely because subconsciously I love to be first and to be the leader in life) ;D

Happy December!

Here's one second of California sunshine. I hope it warms you up a little.

Suddenly the most atmospheric and lovely month of the year was here again (!) It doesn't feel long since I photographed my mom's Christmas decorations last year.

I have a really busy but fun start of the month, with lots of singing and concerts with my choir this week.

I hope all of you will have some nice early December days!

A perfect choice for the giving season, this last page of my "Unlikely Friends" calendar, (all animals), tells this story of the monkey and the stray puppy. If you click on the screen you can read about these two best friends living in Bangladesh.

No one can look at this picture and think that animals don't have feelings, don't have souls.

A combination of foul weather and being under the weather foiled our Christmas travel plans. The result had me at home on Christmas Eve when L517 showed up running late by about 6 hours. I motivated myself to get out and record the train starting to do its work at the autoport. Any shortcomings of the beat up lead unit was weighed against the fresh snow and blue bird day.

From cold and grey yesterday to a wonderful Sunrise with blue sky and the trees in silhouette today. Always surprises here in West Wales!

"Then the soul, freed from vice, purged by studies of true philosophy, versed in spiritual life, and practised in matters of the intellect, devoted to the contemplation of her own substance, as if awakened from deepest sleep, opens those eyes which all possess but few use, and sees in herself a ray of that light which is the true image of the angelic beauty communicated to her, and of which she then communicates a faint shadow to the body."

On a freezing December night, we had the most beautiful clear sky and a rather eerie mist rolling through the valley in front of the house. Usually I tend to avoid the moon in favour of the stars but that night the moon just seemed perfect. So here it is in its Waning Gibbous phase. More moon shots to come no doubt!

DECEMBER winter 2024

Out of probably 100,000 slides I shot over the years this is one of my favorites for a number of reasons. This is train 911 at Garnet in December 1985. After the COFC business was rerouted across lower MI in August 85 trains 909/910 were annulled east of Gladstone and trains 911/912 had there schedule changed so that 912 passed through Trout Lake about 5AM and 911 would be called a Soo Yard on that crews rest. Normally 911 wouldn't depart Soo Yard until nearly dark, especially in the short daylight winter days. That effectively eliminated most of my local photography. Anyway for some reason this 911 fell way off schedule and it departed Trout Lake at about 1PM and I was able to shoot it multiple times as it worked west. There were a ton of clouds around and the sun was in and out like crazy but everything really came together in my mind on this shot at Garnet as a pair of SD's lead a GP38-2 and 55 cars west at 40mph. Next day back to the same schedule and most of my winters photography was over in the Trout Lake area. You have to love the Soo colors in the snow and the sweet December light!

Year end.

Not a recent photo, but one revisited. December exploded with so much to do, photography had to take a back seat. I'm going back through some of my favorite images that didn't make the cut for my 365 Project and fill in some of the blanks for the month.

Happy New Year, everyone!
