I got out to Ramey after they opened Hygiene Road and now that Crane Hollow Road has been reopened, I decided to check the route and see if there were some December shots. I drove the route and stopped several places to snap some shots of the current scenes. All the trees are bare and the pastures sere.
There is a storm starting to swirl around the peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park and there is a load of snow in the Rockies. It's time for those skiing vacations to Colorado but let me post a few words of warning. Out-of-staters are allowed to purchase 1/4 of the amounts Coloradans are allowed. Smoking pot on the slopes in National Forests is a federal offense. Smoking pot in public places is illegal in Colorado. If you return home to your own state with a stash, it is illegal without a doubt. If you rent lodging, the next renters may not like it too much. I personally hope that you might focus on the enormous values of hemp for greener clothing, ethanol, paper and medicine production over what is being used now. And... to be used as the main ingredient for song bird seed. Think of it as bringing production BACK to the U.S.A. after congressional and Mittster's presents to the Chinese.
I have already posted several shots, including shots of Blue Herons nesting, of this area and they are in my photostream. Crane Hollow is an enticing drive at any time of the year. It's clear, in looking at this series, that the floods spread and coursed through this area.
Even here, are piles of detritus laying about in what was left of the pastures. Strangly enough, the Meandering Stream (South Fork) still carries water and was not entirely destroyed in the floods. Some folks are convinced the river ought to be moved back to some of its original, some places empty, course. Darwin should chime in on that idea; he allowed forebears to make a mess of it in the first place. The farmers are screaming about rebuilding ditches before spring. Have at it guys. The bridge, roads and private holdings are still going to require some serious work.
Made another trip to Fort Sheridan this morning to check out Openlands Lakeshore Preserve north of Chicago. It is a beautiful area and a rare stretch of undeveloped Lake Michigan shore line. Pretty much everything on the beach was covered with ice, and it made for some interesting foregrounds. These pilings are all that's left of an old pier.
Kind of a sad one for our Pic of the Day from New Year's Eve in 1958. This is the last train ever to run from Harcourt Street Station in Dublin.
This photo ran in the Irish Independent on New Year's Day 1959, with an article describing the event. Here's an extract:
"An hour after the last train had left Harcourt Station at 4.25 p.m. yesterday the 100-year-old terminus bore a derelict look as a sad-faced staff locked up for the last time.
The departure of the last train will be long remembered by hundreds of people for among the 500 passengers, there were young children who were having their first and last train journey on that route.
Hundreds of people gathered at the station and outside to watch the end of the service. As the train moved out promptly on schedule fog signals exploded and passengers waved to the crowds on the platform.
With tears in her eyes, Mrs Maggie McLoughlin, of York St., who had been selling newspapers at the station for 39 years, said good-bye alone and unnoticed in a corner of the station.
At Bray hundreds of people were waiting on the station to greet the train as it arrived. Some young men attempted to remove fittings as souvenirs but were prevented by the Gardaí on duty."

Just back of Mikasa middle school, Hokkaido. In usual years we have plenty of snow piled up about one meter depth in mid December. Temperature has been higher this year.

A surprising find today. Given how fresh it is I wonder if it's one of the rare December brood referenced in Gochfeld and Burger. A small individual.

Here's the calendar shot from December 2012. This photograph was taken by John Molesevich who is an electrician in Enola, Pa. John began his career with the railroad as a signalman in 1976 working alongside his father.
Warm December Sunrise, Fairfax Station, VA Welcome to the world of red channel blowout. : ( The lesson learned is that Auto WB can easily lead to this problem, but a negative adjustment in the red channel can correct it.) Unfortunately I learned that technique after this shot.
God always has something for you, a key for every problem, a light for every shadow, a relief for every sorrow and a plan for every tomorrow. Let his light bring you joy today!!
it's been done. but my photos are being held hostage on my busted laptop. had to schedule a re-shoot today. et voilà.

WEEK 14 – Closing the Gap (III)
As we step outside, here's one last overview shot of the interior from December 20th. I was happy with how this turned out! Quality-wise, anyway. Content-wise, there's no denying things are getting sadder, what with those store closing sale signs – which we've largely managed to avoid for the majority of this week's photoset, actually – back in full, prominent view, and emptiness growing on the shelving units surrounding them. And of course, things were even sadder on my next visit, just one week later...

These places are public so these photos are too, but just as I tell where they came from, I'd appreciate if you'd say who :)
