Tuzigoot is an ancient settlement site, dating back to between 1100 and 1450 AD. It was thought to be inhabited by indigenous semi-nomadic tribe that hunted, farmed, traded and roamed in this area.
"Tuzigoot" is an Apache word meaning "crooked water."
Tuzigoot was excavated from 1933 to 1935. Later on, a small museum & visitors centre was built (1935–1936). Tuzigoot Ruins was declared a National Monument on July 25, 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966.
