The Abbey of St. Jean des Vignes was a monastery of Augustinian canons in Soissons, France, southwest of the city center. Only ruins remain, of which the west facade remains one of the more outstanding examples of architecture in the town. It is a listed historic monument.
The abbey was founded on St. John's hill in 1076 by Hughes Le Blanc as a community of Augustinian canons.
Initially built in Romanesque style, the initial buildings were replaced at the end of the 12th century by those extant today. The west facade was begun in the 12th century, but not finished until the 16th. The refectory and cellar date from the 13th century, parts of the cloisters from the end of the 13th century, while other parts are from the 16th century, as is the abbot's lodging.
When the abbey was suppressed during the French Revolution the premises were put to use for military purposes, and an arsenal was added.
The site was acquired by the town of Soissons in the 1970s and the remaining buildings are now occupied by educational and heritage-related organizations.
Dating back from almost 7 years ago on a gorgeous day I can't remember having seen this anymore. Also from the time I had a Sony camera, that can't live up to my criteria anymore. So hoping for snow this year, but with temperatures exceeding 12 degrees it might take a while still. Merry Xmas to all the kind people willing to spend time on my pictures!

An afternoon date in the Botanical Gardens in Utrecht, the Netherlands with Ciska which I met through Flickr.
The Botanic Gardens are located at the heart of Utrecht Science Park. They were laid out on and around Fort Hoofddijk, which dates from the 19th century. This extraordinary stretch of green space, covering nine hectares, is part of Utrecht University. To this day, the Botanic Gardens continue to serve their primary function, which is to support education and research. In addition, there has been an increasing focus on the public role played by the Botanic Gardens. Nature conservation, especially in an international context, is another important aspect.
As an organisation, the gardens date back to 1639, making it one of the oldest botanic gardens in the whole of the Netherlands.

The exact date when the first Gothic style church dedicated to apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul, was built is unknown, but it was first mentioned in written sources in 1413. The first parochial school in Kaunas at the St. Peter and St. Paul church was mentioned in 1473.[1] The construction works were concluded only in 1624. The church greatly suffered from wars in 1655 and was rebuilt in 1671, gaining some Renaissance features. Only one of the towers was rebuilt after the fire of the roof in 1732. As a part of renovation, the internal decorations were funded by the King Stanisław August Poniatowski in 1771. The main altar, a lectern and a choir were installed by Tomasz Podhajski in 1775. The present day shape of the building is from a further renovation in 1800. Motiejus Valančius, thе bishop of Samogitia, who was also an historian and one of the best known Lithuanian writers of the 19th century, was interred in a crypt of the church in 1875.
The church was promoted to cathedral status by Pope Leo XIII in 1895. It received the Basilica title in 1926, when the Diocese of Samogitia was reorganized into the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kaunas by Pope Pius XI. The cathedral, being 84 m long, 28 m height and 34 m wide, is the largest Gothic church in Lithuania. The Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, built in 1895, is an independent extension of the southern nave with carved wood furnishings in the neo-gothic style.

Last Wednesday I was able to catch both the empties and loads on NHN with little effort. I got word that Dover was packed full of interchange and knew a full green set had gone south the day before. With gas, steel, and oil I knew there would be a chance they may be pretty late getting into the pit. I got the timely heads up as I was taking my lunch that they had just departed Tri-City, so I headed downtown to see what was available. Although not the most ideal conditions, it was better than the cloud mess forecasted, and I got a quick visit in with the friendly folks waterside in Lebanon, Maine. They had an impressive 53 cars going north.
