Photo shows lawyer Inez Milholland Boissevain riding astride in the suffrage parade as the first of four mounted heralds. In her short life she shared with many of her fellow marchers a commitment to social reform. She joined organizations striving to improve the working conditions of children and the lives of African Americans. She was also a strong supporter of the shirtwaist and laundry workers. Three years after the parade, she collapsed and died at age thirty during a western suffrage lecture tour. At 5:08pm on Monday, 25 July, we received reports of a fire on Theale Road in Burghfield.
Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Caversham Road, Wokingham Road, Newbury, Hungerford, Mortimer, Ascot, Whitley Wood, Wokingham and Theale were sent to the scene alongside three Officers. Three 4x4s, a water carrier and an incident command unit were also sent to the scene. Crews from Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service also attended the incident.
Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire in an industrial barn. Using six jets, four high pressure hose reels and a high volume pump, firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus extinguished the fire, whilst protecting surrounding barns and fields.
Crews were on the scene for approximately 16 hours and 15 minutes.
