Dating from the 19th century these markers were located all around the City of London at a roughly 20 mile radius to mark the area in which tax was charged on all coal entering the area.
There were originally about 280 and around three quarters have survived.
This is a cast iron version by the River Thames near Weybridge.

Never seen the original version of this yellow runner space invader in the 4ème arrondissement in Paris (in the book Invasion of Paris this one is listed to be located in the 3ème arrondissement which is not correct.
Taken on a rainy afternoon in Paris. Thanks goodness the umbrella of the woman matches well with the space invader.

Date nails during the early half of the 20th century were widespread on various roads. Most often, date nails indicated when the tie was treated at the factory before being laid by track gangs. The Santa Fe were yuge buyers of date nails, with the newest being stamped in 1969.
Here, a date nail dated for 1927 is embedded into a railroad tie at Colmor, NM. The Raton and Glorieta Subs are some of the last mainlines that feature date nails of this age.

You know, just when I'm thinking of coming back to flickr, they decide to force this black look with the sidebar on everyone. It looks like absolute shit on my screen and it's so hard to quickly find the info I usually look at (tags, other groups/streams it's in), so now I'm thinking of completely giving up this site.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: Meet Beyonce (the girl on the left)! I actually have two Beyonce dolls from childhood--this AA Stylin' Pup and AA Swan Lake Odette. What can I say, I was always on the lookout for a doll that looked like the singer, since I thought she was so beautiful. I want to say that I had this doll first of my two "Beyonces." I got her sometime after my brunette Stylin' Pup doll, named Alicia. It's interesting that I opted to get two dolls from the same set, because there was no outfit/accessory variation between any of the three dolls. Since I was eleven when I got Alicia, and very careful with my doll stuff by that point, I didn't have a "need" for any new accessory or outfit items. Beyonce saw a lot more play than Alicia, despite joining the family second. I honestly cannot remember anymore which store I bought her from. I'm assuming she was one of those Barbies Dad bought me on one of our weekend toy runs circa 2003. I do recall that our grandmother had recently moved out when I acquired Miss Beyonce--we were using her vacated bedroom as a temporary doll room. I fondly remember those days we spent in the pink room, with doll stuff strewn from one end to the other. I have a vivid memory of playing with this Beyonce in "Heidi's" kitchen (aka Travel in Style Barbie). She filled in for Heidi briefly, so that meant she took over her role in the doll games--she dated Leroy (Water Jewel Magic Aladdin) and was mom to Stephanie (Bathtime Fun Kelly). Although I have many more stunning African American dolls in my collection, this Stylin' Pup lady will always have a fond place in my heart, and I'm so glad that I still have her to this day!
I was eager to be greeted by a second Stylin' Pup Beyonce in October of 2025. The girl on the right side of this photo was part of a lot we purchased that fall, at the local flea market. She was included in the "Barbie Blast Lot," which contained mainly African American dollies. I must say, that the original owner of this bin had impeccable taste. Though quite a few were duplicates, they were all dolls who were not as easy to find as their blonde counterparts. Sadly, Beyonce's twin did not have her outfit in the accompanying baggie of clothes. I didn't have any extra bits for her at home either (my blonde variation was still waiting to be reunited with it). It was very fun getting to see this gal try on different outfits. She dresses just as well as my childhood friend. I absolutely love the caramel highlights in their hair!
