I've found myself out of step again. You lot are posting snowy shots and I'm still stuck in (pre) autumn 😂 Anyway, my first visit to Fairy Glen near Betws-y-Coed. A bit overwhelming and not sure I really did it justice! Before going I read this:

And made sure I had a bit of extra change, to make up in a small way for the arseh0les the owners clearly have to endure.

Blaenau Ffestiniog

"Hidden Gem"

Me and Rebecca have visited these falls a few times now and it is a relatively quiet area. I wouldn't call the falls easy to get to with a few steep sections to access them. Theres even a cave that i didn't dare venture to far into!

The local news site for North Wales recently published an article about the area, describing it as a hidden gem. No doubt it will get a few extra visitors. Lovely article filled with history about the area but only one sentence about how tricky it is to access the falls/ caves is a bit irresponsible.

Penmaenmawr

I only found about these viaducts quite recently. Travelling across the A55 eastbound they are just another stretch of road. They are hidden unless you visit at low tide or have a drone :)

Looking into the history, the Pen-y-clip headland has been a difficult spot for travel along the coast. With its close location to the hills and mountains of Snowdonia you would think the coast would be the easiest route. But to get around this rocky headland Thomas Telford built a road in 1820's(above the road viaduct in this photo). This was followed by a Railway viaduct in the 1840's. 100 years(1935) later the road was improved with tunnels and another viaduct.

"The road was opened on 5 October 1935 by L. Hore-Belisha, Minister of Transport. It comprised tunnels of 180 and 100 feet either side of a seven arch viaduct. Each arch was 80 feet and maximum height was 95 feet. The piers of the viaduct had to be sunk 31 feet into the ground to counteract movement of the mountain side. Contractor was M.A. Boswell of Wolverhampton, cost £200,000. Originally for two-way traffic, it became the eastbound carriageway after the South tunnel was opened in 1993.."

The now closed Sappers Suspension Bridge which crosses over the Afon Conwy (River Conwy) in Betws-Y-Coed, Conwy County, North Wales.

Until 1917, stepping stones were the only way to cross the River Conwy at this point. That year, a wooden footbridge was built on the site by the Royal Engineers to link the village with an army camp on the opposite side of the river.

When this was washed away in a storm in 1930, it was rebuilt by Westminster-based engineers David Rowell & Co. Seven years earlier the company constructed Queen’s Park Suspension Bridge, a similar but rather grander affair in Chester. The Betws-y-Coed version retained its original name of Sappers Bridge as a mark of respect to the Royal Engineers’ war-time efforts.

The suspension bridge used to be renowned for its wobbly midpoint and was a key shortcut across the River Conwy for locals and tourists. However, structural reviews conducted last year found that virtually the entire bridge would need to be refurbished, with the entire timber deck as well as other parts replaced completely.

No firm decision has yet been made due to the costs and funding. At the start of 2023 Conwy Council secured over £18m in UK Government funding to create a cycle path between Llandudno Junction and Betws-y-Coed and This scheme could feature an improved river crossing where Sappers Bridge is located.

www.bcd-urbex.com/engedi-chapel-caernarfon-wales/ "A historic 19th Century chapel has been sold for £45,000.

( ... )

Located a short distance from the town centre on New Street, it was established in 1842 and built as we see it today in 1867.

It played a part in Welsh history in 1856, when the founding of a Welsh colony in Patagonia was discussed for the first time by the Literary Society of Caernarfon .

One leading member of the society was local printer Lewis Jones who went on to rally support for the colony and wrote a report on the Chubut area, where the first settlers arrived from Wales in 1865.

The chapel's most impressive feature is its grand classical entrance, designed by architect Richard Owen of Liverpool."

I need your help. I'm starting a social media campaign next week, called Proud to Pick up , people will post a picture of themselves holding a bag of poo with their dog with the hashtag # Proud To Pick Up, then they nominate six people to do the same and hopefully it'll go viral. Just to show how many people actually pick up and why these Fascist laws are draconian and punish the wrong people. Positive reinforcement rather than Creeping Fascism. Not just for Dog Fouling but for litter too, so don't forget to nominate a few non dog owners too. Starts Thursday 10th of August. Lets break the internet.

October 1, 2015 - I am starting to think of fall as the season of death. Despite the beauty is affords, it takes away loved ones.

When I took this photo I was at a remote facility and still out of cell phone service range; I did not yet know that my father had passed away early in the morning.
