I finally had some company at the Monocacy station this morning.
One of the things I keep hoping to accomplish on my photo-strolls to work is to get decent pictures of wildlife. I see quite a few creatures on any given morning, and when I'm not actually in the process of walking I tend to imagine myself working really hard to snap cool pictures of them. But when I actually am in the process of walking? I'm normally staggering along half-asleep and mostly cranky about whatever weather conditions I'm suffering through. And when the wildlife flits by, I'm normally totally oblivious until way too late. Take this morning, for instance. I saw a bright yellow goldfinch practically posing for me, a heron low in flight over the stream, and a gorgeous monarch-y butterfly. By the time I realized what was going on, lifted the camera, focused, and snapped a shot, all three situations had passed. D'oh!

So there I am plodding along slowly before the sun was above the horizon this morning, listening to Nine Inch Nails a little bit too loudly on my headphones, and suddenly I heard this crazy racket behind me. I spun around, saw nothing, and then realized the crazy sound had gotten louder and was overhead. It was the ginormous flock of starlings wheeling about. They swooped around like one organic whole, settled into some trees up ahead, then darted around behind me just to repeat the whole process. And of course I didn't have any kind of wide angle lens with me. So here's the 100's view of the giant flock of birds, and some telephone wires. Out of frame are the other 8,000 birds.

The farm stand has converted to a Christmas tree stand! WOOOOOOOOOO!
It was a pefect morning for walking to work -- cold and crisp, but not brutal; frosty and scenic; with a lovely sunrise, and christmas decorations on the barns along the way. I love December!
And it was a great day, too. There's nothing quite like everyone getting out of work a bit early so we can get a jump on a much-anticipated normalizing weekend.

I got up a half an hour earlier than usual for my walk this morning, because I decided I wanted to be done with my workday by 11 am. The sky was utterly gorgeous when I looked out the window, with all these little puffy clouds all pinkly lit by the dawn. But I was too slow in getting dressed and out the door, so all I got a picture of was puffy clouds lit by an immediately-after-rising sun.
