Two shot composite of a dart spiraling to the bullseye. I thought it was interesting how the bristle board threw debris on impact. Lit with a single SB-600 snooted with 12 inches of black paper taped to a 3" diameter to create a tight circle of light on the board.

Thanks to my buddy Charles for being uber patient and having to throw back to back bulls when everything was finally set.

This would have been so much easier if I had 2 or even 3 strobes so the dart could be lit from a different angle.

"Ramblings"

An early start for my trip up to Dartmoor arriving a little before sunrise with a big difference from my last visit, enjoying a frosty start, clear skies and not a breath of wind.

This little area of woodland was very busy with a good variety of birds, but the most vocal being the Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler.

With the trees only just starting bud, I found spotting the activerty up among the branches fairly easy.

This little fella was singing his little heart out and frequently darting out from his perch to grab the insects on the wing.

A shot of the first black darter I have seen a rather small and difficult to spot species on the path

This is a handheld in camera focus stack.

A male Darter roosting on a branch that was overhanging a fresh water pond. Sometimes called a "snake-bird". Best viewed large :)

I've been in the bus industry for some 47 years, and if there is one thing I should have learned in that time, its when to pull the plug on something! The problem is that you feel you have an idea what a bus might require to restore it to use, set off down the path of doing necessary work, but then find more that needs doing . . . and more . . . and more! At that point, you either go forward with it, sucking the financial mop, or you end up with a very expensive piece of scrap.

To cut a very long story short, I'm now the proud owner of a Dart which owes me over double its worth on a good day to a keen purchaser. Its the economics of the mad house.

Ok, the bus has long outasted its intended design life, but it brought it home to me just what a state the modern generation of preservationists will be in as their favoured bus dissolves around them . . . if the electronics don't snuff out their dreams first.

I think its fair to say that only 75% of the chassis under my Dart is that which Dennis put there, the remaining 25% is Reliance Bus Works. Finally today it gained a new MoT though.

This darter loved this plant at the edge of the pond and kept coming back. So I just sat there snapping away.

Another silhouette photo, this time an Australasian Darter :-)

Harking back to 2013 and an unusual working to say the least on Service 31.

At the end of its life in Edinburgh Dennis Dart SLF, Plaxton Pointer SPD number 54 (SK52 OHX) rarely ever got a treat on any route other than Service 36 although this was the one that disgraced itself in Queen Street, stopping all the traffic for an hour one busy lunchtime!

Dart 54 is seen on Princes Street working part-route to Elm Row.

Australasian Darter (Female) Cormorant: Because of its long and slender neck, the Australasian Darter is sometimes called the snakebird. Usually inhabiting freshwater wetlands, darters swim with their bodies submerged beneath the water’s surface, with only the sinuous neck protruding above the water, enhancing its serpentine qualities. Darters forage by diving to depths of about 60 centimetres, and impaling fish with its sharp, spear-like beak. Small fish are swallowed underwater, but larger ones are brought to the surface, where they are flicked off the bill (sometimes into the air) and then swallowed head-first.

The Darter is a large, slim water bird with a long snake-like neck, sharp pointed bill, and long, rounded tail. Male birds are dark brownish black with glossy black upperwings, streaked and spotted white, silver-grey and brown. The strongly kinked neck has a white or pale brown stripe from the bill to where the neck kinks and the breast is chestnut brown. Females and immatures are grey-brown above, pale grey to white below, with a white neck stripe that is less distinct in young birds. The Darter is often seen swimming with only the snake-like neck visible above the water, or drying its wings while perched on a tree or stump over water. While its gait is clumsy on land, it can soar gracefully to great heights on thermals, gliding from updraft to updraft. It has a cross-shaped silhouette when flying.

Many thanks to all who take the time to view, comment or fav my images

Darters seem to love landing on wooden handrails. This male was quite comfortable with me being around and just after this shot hopped onto my lens before catching a passing small fly.

Lovely to find a male Black Darter that stopped darting for a moment! (The females seem to be a bit more relaxed!) :)
