This is the main school in Chandpai, which - like the one in Galachipa - doubles as a cyclone shelter. The writing and illustration on the walls gives instruction on what to do in the event of a cyclone.
7 hours steady work to get everything secured to my satisfaction. I still felt I should have had more rope on board as I wasn't fully surrounded by protective mangroves.
In each forum, women were taught how to respond to cyclone warnings. This includes protecting their family assets and going to a cyclone shelter. They were also given a ‘preparing for cyclones’ flip chart so they can share the information with friends and neighbours.

One prime concern of ECHO and its partners was the adequate supply of clean drinking water. In response these water distribution points were set up so that the survivors would not risk their health by drinking polluted water directly from the rivers.

(L-R) Sunila Wati, Dhanbhagium Maraj and Sharika Rikasnhi at what remains of the Rakiraki market, Fiji. They and their families rely on what they earn selling fresh produce at the market - now more than ever. Tropical Cyclone Winston destroyed a lot of the local crops, however, so wholesale prices have tripled and customers do not have the money to pay. When they don't sell everything on their table, they have to pay more for the transport they need to get it back to their village rather than risk it being stolen.

Tropical cyclones, or hurricanes or typhoons, are storm weather systems, characterized by a low pressure center, thunderstorms and high windspeeds. As the name testifies, these occur in the areas between the tropics, in the tropical areas. Cyclones can, after they have formed in the oceans, move in over populated areas, creating much damage and even natural disasters.
