Hundreds of thousands of people who had lost their homes and their posessions set up shelters along the few roads to try and escape the floods and in the hope that they would receive humanitarian assistance.

Aklima, 35, mother of three, returned home from a cyclone shelter to find it knee-deep in water.
Having barely recovered from Cyclone Sidr in late 2007, the people in the south-western coastal area of Bangladesh have again been hit by a major storm, this time by Cyclone Aila which made landfall on 25 May 2009.

Entire houses were swpet away and trees uprooted in Horingkula, in Barisal division. Cyclone Sidr swept through southwestern Bangladesh on Novenber 16, destroying homes, crops and wildlife. The zinc roofs and wooden walls of many homes in villages throughout the worst-hit Khulna and Barisal divisions were unable to withstand the winds that hit on November 16, and rice fields were destroyed for a third time after floods earlier this year as rivers overflowed their banks. Official death toll figures stand at 2,000, although the Red Cross estimates that up to 10,000 may have perished in the storm. Direct Relief has provided medical material assistance to Bangladesh, focusing on basic medical supplies, emergency response, and reproductive health.
Thanks to generous donations received on behalf of cyclone victims, Direct Relief awarded grants to organizations doing especially innovative and effective work to help the people of Bangladesh rebuild their lives and livelihoods.
Direct Relief is continuing to build its in-country network of health care providers in Bangladesh to assist with this response and further develop long-term partnerships.
