Rode the Cyclone with Alyson. It's actually on city park land, though I think the coaster itself is no longer owned by the city.

As super cyclone Pam made its way towards the South Pacific on Friday 13 March 2015, with gusts of wind peaking at a frightening 320km/h, the people of Vanuatu made their way to the safest buildings they could find, trying to find some shelter for the night to come.

Will this cyclone bring the spring? Hope so...

The Red Arrows at Dawlish Airshow. August 2013.

Michael, his wife Jacqueline and their four children were terrified when Cyclone Pam struck their village on the night of 13 March 2015. ..“All we could think about was saving our lives and our children,” explained Michael when talking about spending the night in a safe community centre. ..“When we woke in the morning we found our house was gone. All our clothes, our cooking supplies, everything has been lost.”..“We have started clearing the rubble and sorting the garbage apart from what we might be able to use to rebuild.“..Today Red Cross has provided Michael with two tarpaulins and a shelter toolkit to assist with temporary shelter while he begins to rebuild. ..With thousands of homes damaged, a priority need is emergency shelter and longer term support to rebuild homes. Affected communities are showing great resilience and are already repairing their homes...The Red Cross is currently focusing its relief response on meeting immediate needs including providing clean drinking water, distributing non-food items and providing emergency shelter materials.

Some homes may still be getting rid of the last of cyclone rubbish, as with this shot taken last week.

At the chamber of commerce, however, things are just starting to hot up.

Early criticism has been made about procedure at Monday's meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to chose nominations for the Tourism Corporation board, for approval by the minister of tourism.

One critic said that the procedure followed was flawed.

This is denied.

"It was the meeting that decided," said chamber president Theresa Manarangi-Trott about procedures set by members.

Criticism centres on the fact that sectors previously represented on the board of the tourism corporation have now been replaced by one sector, on one island: Rarotonga accomodators.

One chamber member said some nominations were left off a blackboard of names. Others

Questions from avaiki nius agency: Some nominations were not written on the board, while others were?

Answers from Trott: "No. What names? What names were left off the board?"

So to your knowledge, all names were on the board?

"Yes. There were a number of times it was asked during the meeting whether there were any further nominations and no one put any further names forward so it was moved to close nominations."

Some claim some nominations were read out, others not?

"No. What ones were not read out?"

So to your knowledge all nominations received were read out?

"Yes."

Has there been any complaints about the election process?

"Yes. I have just received something from Mrs. [Helen] Wong, copied to Mr Wong."

What are your reactions to those complaints?

"I have only just received it and haven't actually made a response."

In the interests of transparency, can we have the vote counts for all of the candidates?

"That's something that needs to go back to the meeting. Nothing to say you can't. But the meeting didn't say you can. In the end they end up at the tourist authority."

So we can't have access to the actual numbers?

"They've actually been destroyed."

Why was a decision made to limit the numbers of candidates to 5?

"It was a decision made at the meeting. And the meeting agreed that is what should happen."

Do you think as a general matter of transparency that the names and votes should be given out?

"No, because it is the meeting that decides. If the meeting decides, its a procedural matter, then that issue does not arrise."

The act only requires a "minimum" of five nominations? Wouldn't more transparency on voting figures give the minister a better idea of how much support each has?

"That is something you will have to raise with the minister. In any case, it was the meeting that decided on that procedure."

Manarangi-Trott has given the chamber a much higher public profile than any other presidency since being elected late last year.

There have been more public meetings on business issues in the last four months than possibly the previous four years.

Every high profile, however, attracts criticism sooner or later.

Like most fires, the criticism dies out.

Gale force winds blew from a SSE direction from a stern but I barely felt the effects. A full cyclone would have been a serious test.

A planned community of 1000 houses, funded by a well-known Burmese monk, Thiri Lingar, is under construction. 300 houses have already been completed. Families made homeless as a direct result of Nargis are the 1st priority, with general landless families the next in line.

A bore well will (hopefully) provide water, but it is unclear where the work to sustain such a community of landless labourers will come from, particularly considering the village's relative isolation and poor transport links.

Anowara, outside her shelter..“The storm came in the afternoon eight days back. First I rushed to a higher ground with others and spent the night all wet and cold. Next morning moved to the embankment and made this shack salvaging items from my home. I am on my own; husband left me; I never had a child. I work as a wage labourer to survive. And there is no work for a week now. People from outside came and gave me 5 kilograms of rice few days back. Everyday we hope to receive more. Life for a single woman is harder than others for there isn’t a man to look after me. The storm is another hazard in my life.”..This is a remote area and takes 7 hours to reach from the divisional town of Khulna. The only operating tube well nearest to us is serving 400 families. “The water is salty and what to do. We are used to drink salty water and outsiders, when they come to visit us, don’t drink water here. They carry their water.”..“People only know shrimp farming here and buy rice from the earnings. We have water all around us and it is not drinkable. This is only salty life; salty sweat and probably we don’t smile sweet, only salty and raw smiles.”.

That's what it's called. I'm fascinated by anthropomorphic industrial beings, especially the way they look at night.

"Ride the American Legend" Come on down and take a ride on the roller coaster that's been thrilling New Yorkers for over 80 years!

Every roller coaster enthusiast around the world has heard of, has ridden or hopes to ride The Cyclone. This historic roller coaster graces virtually every top roller coaster list and publication. Roller coasters may have gotten bigger and faster, but they have not gotten any better than The Cyclone. Time Magazine quoted Charles Lindbergh as saying that a ride on the Cyclone was more thrilling than his historic first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Emilio Franco, a mute since birth, regained his voice on the Cyclone, uttering his first words ever -- I feel sick! In April 2001, singer Nikki Lauren became the first person ever to present a live musical performance in the Cyclone's historic loading station.

An official New York City Landmark since July 12, 1988, Cyclone was listed in the New York State Register of Historic Places on June 31, 1991. National Register designation followed, on June 26, 1991.
