Michael, his wife Jacqueline and their four children were terrified when Cyclone Pam struck their village on the night of 13 March 2015. ..“All we could think about was saving our lives and our children,” explained Michael when talking about spending the night in a safe community centre. ..“When we woke in the morning we found our house was gone. All our clothes, our cooking supplies, everything has been lost.”..“We have started clearing the rubble and sorting the garbage apart from what we might be able to use to rebuild.“..Today Red Cross has provided Michael with two tarpaulins and a shelter toolkit to assist with temporary shelter while he begins to rebuild. ..With thousands of homes damaged, a priority need is emergency shelter and longer term support to rebuild homes. Affected communities are showing great resilience and are already repairing their homes...The Red Cross is currently focusing its relief response on meeting immediate needs including providing clean drinking water, distributing non-food items and providing emergency shelter materials.

They lost their newly built home in Cyclone Nargis, and are now living in a small hut attached to one of their in-laws houses.

Daw Aye Thant, 61, and her husband U Kyaw Han, 70. She has a heart ailment and he is partially paralysed. They own 2.5 acres of rice paddy and have borrowed 100,000 kyats ($100) from their daughter to farm it. They have received help (seed, fertiliser, rice) from IDE, but they are struggling as their Summer paddy has been devastated by Brown Grass Hopper. Their normal rice yield is only 30% of what it should be. They have never seen this pest before, and many NGOs (including IDE) are certain that it is because of inappropriate post-Nargis use of pesticides circulated by the FAO and partner agencies. These pesticides killed all insects, including those such as dragonflies that are beneficial to farmers in controlling unwanted pests.

Ko Soe Tint, 20, a landless day labourer, sits beside his home.

He lives on a creek-side plot with 15 members of his extended family. They are all day labourers, but with waage labour in short supply at the moment they are often unemployed.

Roughly 70% of the delta is now landless, but this trend has stalled as even the larger farmers can no longer afford to buy up land from struggling smaller croppers. Rice prices hit new lows after Nargis, with farmers producing at a loss and spriralling into debt. A dire shortage of wage labour ensued, creating a desperate situation throughout the delta, and indeed much of Myanmar.

U Soe Myint's blighted paddy is threshed with the help of neighbours.

He owns 5.7 acres of rice paddy, which he farms along with his two sons. He lost 3500 kg of rice (stored in his small barn) during Cyclone Nargis, and has struggled ever since, as it was his only real asset, in terms of self-sufficiency and investment. He only managed to survive because of NGO/private rice handouts. His problems have been further exacerbated since Nargis by the spread of pests, including the Brown Grass Hopper, which has devastated his crop which is down from 550 'tins' to 120 'tins' (one 'tin' is 35 kg). The inappropriate use of pesticides is widely-blamed for the spread of the hopper, as the pesticides destroyed beneficial insects as well as harmful ones.

The Cyclone at Pleasureland Southport opened on Good friday 1937. A figure-8 wooden coaster which is 2500 ft long. Although the coaster was designed by Charlie Page, the original station was designed by Joseph Emberton Riba. The station was rebuilt in 1985 following a fire.

Neighbours help thresh U Soe Myint's pest-ridden summer paddy yeild. Very little grain remains in the husks.

He supplements his livlihood by raising chickens, ducks and growing some vegetables.

Despite the closing of Astroland Park on September 7th, 2008, the Cyclone will remain in operation due to its status as a New York City landmark

Muddy Bay - aptly named. I repositioned my boat by adjusting cyclone ropes at high tide - hence the mud impression of main hull from previous low tide position.

Roshanara is 16 years old and before Aila struck her village she was in school. Her family moved to a nearby embankment. "My parents forced me to marry and stop school. They said that life on an embankment is unsafe for a young unmarried girl; the boys they tease and bully. My husband and his family were also affected by the cyclone. Now my life is hard, and my dream is to resume my studies."

Part of a 'Shin Pyu' ceremony where young boys are ordained into Buddist monkhood for the first time.

This is a very important event in the Buddhist calendar, and families feel intense social and personal pressure to ensure that their sons can participate. Money is, however, often an obstacle. On average, it costs around 100,000 kyats ($100) per boy - a sum that many can not afford. In the post-Nargis delta, credit shortages, falling rice-prices and crop failure have put huge pressure on family finances.

I decided to add a cyclone dust separator to my woodwork shop vacuum. It is brilliant as it stops most of the dust etc getting through to the shop vacs filter. Therefore stopping it getting blocked up and needing constant cleaning. I self built it from a bucket i bought for £5, the rest of the stuff used was lying around the garage.

Classic, wooden coaster of Coney Island. SO FUN! See video footage, here

Rode the Cyclone with Alyson. It's actually on city park land, though I think the coaster itself is no longer owned by the city.
