BLACKTRANSARCHIVE.COM also known as „We Are Here Because Of Those That are Not“ is an archive built and designed by and for Black Trans people. The archive’s aim was to find a way to more accurately store Black Trans existence, an archive that would erase us as it attempts to remember us. Culminating in an 3D animated game the project preserves the stories of Black Trans people generating a space where our existence cannot be ignored.

Photo showing the Project "Sound For Fungi. Homage To Indeterminacy" by Theresa Schubert (DE) at the CyberArts Exhibition.

Sound for Fungi. Homage to Indeterminacy began as a laboratory experiment in which Schubert played sinus frequencies to fungi mycelia she collected from forests near her home in Berlin. After weeks of observing, most of them showed a positive response to the influence of sound by growing faster and denser than samples grown in silence. The interactive and generative video installation simulates Schubert’s experiment. Audiences can explore this biological process by using a tracking sensor, whereby hand movements simulate the role of a sound frequency and change the fungi’s growth in real time. The title refers to the American composer John Cage’s development of “indeterminacy” as an improvisational technique in which aspects of a composition are left open to chance, nature, or free choice. Improvisation—not so much as a musical process but understood as a natural life phenomenon—represents a condition of existence itself. With her work, the artist facilitates an interspecies experience which works best when visitors bring tranquility and patience to their interaction.

A work also featured in CyberArts 2013, Voices of Aliveness is a vocal sculpture, a so-called metamonument constructed from a collective memory. Participants ride a bike along a “shouting circuit,” a route along which they can feel free to scream their brains out.

Paolo Cirio’s works embody the contradictions, ethics, limits, and potentials inherent in the social complexity of information society through a provocative, critical, and proactive approach—as seen in his projects about Google and Facebook. Capture examines facial recognition as used in Europe by authorities and companies without a clear legal framework. The artist used facial recognition software to filter out the faces of 4,000 police officers from over 1,000 photos taken during protests in France. Using crowdsourcing, he identified them by name on an online platform and posted the officers’ headshots as street art posters throughout Paris. This deliberately provocative action comments on the potential of facial recognition and artificial intelligence. The lack of privacy regulations for such technology eventually turns it against the same authorities that urge its use. This provocation triggered reactions by France’s Interior Minister and the police unions, leading to the censorship of the artwork.

"Capture" received a Honorary Mention at the Prix Ars Electronica 2021.

PL’AI is the latest in a series of artworks that dwell on the recent transformation in computer science that has shifted from calculation towards adaptive practices of learning from data, and its far reaching effects. In the PLANT MACHINE PROJECT the focus on plants as living agents exposed to the machinic gaze harkens to the use of automation in industrial farming, yet subverts the epistemic framework of science and engineering by making the constructions strive for plant pleasure, representation, and play. The impetus to observe plants and artificial intelligence at play stems from Huizinga’s writing on the ontological implication of play. He sees play as prior to culture and yet not defined by biological necessity, a capacity all creatures possess. In "PL’AI" we explore possibilities of play between cucumber plants and the naïve AI robot moving at their pace.

The robot approaches the plants with 36 individually controlled wires suspended from above, moving at the rate of 1cm/h. The robot senses the cucumbers with a laser scanner and feeds the images through a neural network, which in turn decides how to approach the plants by moving the colored balls. Through time the algorithmic “imagination” of cucumbers is modified via feedback from the cucumber tendrils while gradually transforming the robot-tendrils into a cucumber trellis that supports their growth.

The play between the cucumber and robot leaves morphological traces in the shape of the plants, the steel strings, and the neural network. We encounter the opening up of another temporality, neither that of a plant nor of a machine alone, already mutated by their needs and desires, and by our own implication in the possibility of their joy.

"PL'AI" by Špela Petrič (SI) received an award on Honorary Mention at the Prix Ars Electronica 2021.

Photo showing the Project "A Father’s Lullaby" by Rashin Fahandej (US) at the CyberArts Exhibition.

A Father’s Lullaby is a “poetic movement” in which art and technology mobilize a plethora of voices while utilizing public places and virtual spaces. The project addresses the unequal treatment of prisoners in the USA based on ethnic origin (as well as the disparity in the rate of imprisonment) and the impact of this situation on children, women, and low-income communities. The installation consists of different layers of sound: a series of compositions based on lullabies contributed by fathers and a touch-activated sound station with audio/light panels that unfolds many different stories. Songs and lullabies collected via a website, as well as interviews with men on probation, tell of the structural violence of male-dominated mass imprisonment, but also of love and trauma, presence and absence, and the power of personal memories. A Father’s Lullaby is also beeing presented In Kepler’s Gardens / Campus of the Johannes Kepler University.

"A Fathers Lullaby" won the Award of Distinction at the Prix Ars Electronica 2021.

Besides developing *OriHime* and *OriHime-D*, which users regardless of age, gender, or disability can remotely operate, Ory Lab has created the *Dawn Avatar Robot Café*, where users work and visit via robots. The goal is to show that with the right tools, even people who have difficulty in moving about freely can do physical labor and customer service from the comfort of their homes via an avatar robot. For those who can't go outside due to the physical/psychological challenges of diseases, past accidents, or the likes *OriHime* creates another means of physical expression and action. *OriHime* is operated remotely by “pilots”, who interact with the world outside through the robots' cameras, speakers, and microphone. In this way, the robots offer virtual outings even for paralyzed pilots, who use a line-of-sight input device to speak with others.

Avatar Robot Cafe DAWN ver.β received the Golden Nica at the Prix Ars Electronica 2022 in the category Digital Communities.

Kurokawa conceives his audiovisual works as timebased sculptures. The work’s title, “rheo,” is derived from the Greek word meaning “river” or “to flow.” In this sense, the audio & video recordings of real landscapes undergo seamless transitions into graphic analyses or re-syntheses of them. The result is a sort of landscape “under observation."

Captives is an ongoing series of sculptures—some digital, some three-dimensional—that constitute a continuation and contemporary reinterpretation of Michelangelo’s unfinished Prigioni series and his famous non finito technique. The works explore the tension and balance between form and content on one hand, and between manmade perfection and the complex, chaotic forms of nature on the other.

"Perfect Sleep" investigates sleep and dreaming as a potential climate engineering technology. By inviting participants to experiment with their own sleep cycles, the work explores how lack of sleep and climate change are both products of the same extractivist capitalist system where regeneration, rest and natural limits go unvalued.

Photo showing the Project "OPERA" by Erick Oh (US) at the CyberArts Exhibition.

OPERA is a massive animation installation that portrays our society and history with all its diversity of beauty and absurdity. A civilization rises and falls (and rises again) in a continuous movement. The animated film can be seen as a contemporary animated development inspired by Renaissance fresco paintings and artists such as Bosch, Michelangelo, and Botticelli. With myriad details, Erick Oh recounts a repetitive human history and provides insights into the range of human emotions. His OPERA is hopeful, funny, thoughtful, frightening, and sad all at once. It challenges us to question the mechanisms of society and our own behavior, and to learn from the past.

"OPERA" won the Award of Distinction at the Prix Ars Electronica 2021.
