Many women of that area, including Shanti Das (a victim), the mistress of a notorious anti-social, were involved in foul professions and such honeymoons of these women with the anti-socials were an open secret, that days events appeared to be a sequel to the rivalry between these anti-socials, This statement was published in full by the CPI(M)s party organ, Peoples Democracy (29 July 1990)! .

Compulsions of Election Season might have forced the CPI(M)-SFI to issue a token apology in the present case-BUT all the above instances and countless others prove their REAL patriarchal, sexist and violent attitude to women in public life! .
In the present case, the CPI(M) also needs to apologise to the sex workers of Sonagachi, for the humiliation Basu has heaped on them. Pushed by a system that has thrown these poor women into the margins, so that they can be devoured, all they have done is struggle to eke out a living and survived. Why should they be invoked as a symbol of shame? What have they done to be ashamed of? Basu has no business tearing apart the dignity of Sonagachis sex-workers; rather he and his party should be answerable as to why women in Sonagachi continue to live such deprived lives. .
