After the infamous Birati rape case (near Kolkata) in 1991, Shyamali Gupta, the then General Secretary of the CPI(M)s West Bengal womens wing, said the following about the 3 Bangladeshi refugee victims: ..the three women who stayed in the unauthorised hutments along the railway tracks... Many women of that area, including Shanti Das (a victim), the mistress of a notorious anti-social, were involved in foul professions and such honeymoons of these women with the anti-socials were an open secret, that days events appeared to be a sequel to the rivalry between these anti-socials, This statement was published in full by the CPI(M)s party organ, Peoples Democracy (29 July 1990)! .

..Whose words are these, words that are redolent with the prurient and odorous sexism of bazar gossip? . Was Shyamali Gupta ever condemned for such obnoxious statement? NO. Shyamali Gupta was steadily promoted to become the National Working President of CPI(M)s womens wing AIDWA !!! .
Compulsions of Election Season might have forced the CPI(M)-SFI to issue a token apology in the present case-BUT all the above instances and countless others prove their REAL patriarchal, sexist and violent attitude to women in public life! .
In the present case, the CPI(M) also needs to apologise to the sex workers of Sonagachi, for the humiliation Basu has heaped on them. Pushed by a system that has thrown these poor women into the margins, so that they can be devoured, all they have done is struggle to eke out a living and survived. Why should they be invoked as a symbol of shame? What have they done to be ashamed of? Basu has no business tearing apart the dignity of Sonagachis sex-workers; rather he and his party should be answerable as to why women in Sonagachi continue to live such deprived lives. .

Taney, former Supreme Court Chief Justice, as culpable for “the worst decision in American history.” Taney wrote the majority decision in the 1857 Dred Scott case. Taney ruled that slaves were property, not people, and required the federal government to protect slavery regardless of the wishes of the local population. “Negroes had for a century before been regarded as beings of an inferior order,” wrote Taney, “and altogether unfit to associate with the white race, either in social or political relations, and so far inferior that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect.”
