“Here’s the way to feel refreshed” was a slogan that caught the eye from magazine readers in the 1940s. “Your thirst takes wings when you treat it with to an ice-cold Coca-Cola”. Even the busiest man in the world comes up smiling after ‘the pause that refreshes’.

From the earliest days, ‘Coca-Cola’ has a very simple purpose, and that is to offer people of the world a moment out of the day to relax, to enjoy and to be refreshed.

The feeling when you drink an ice-cold ‘Coke’ from that traditional curvy glass bottle on a steamy hot day is one of those things you never forget or fail to appreciate. Your whole body relaxes as that caramel-like sweetness hits your tongue and is followed by that wonderfully pleasant burn as it hits the back of your throat and is finally welcomed by your stomach as it quenches your thirst. That, my friends, is refreshment!

We all speak football. Not only it’s the world's favorite spectator sport but it's also played by millions of people of all ages, skill levels and genders all over the world. Football’s universality is its simplicity, the fact that the game can be played anywhere with anything. Urban children kick the can on concrete and rural kids kick a rag wrapped around a rag wrapped around a rag, barefoot, on dirt.

Next summer, Euro 2008 will take place in Austria and Switzerland. As the qualifying matches are going into a final stage, we will soon know the 16 teams that will join the host countries.

To quote the book "Soccer and Its Rules": "Are you ready? Ready to cheer the players to victory, marvel at their fitness, speed, and skills, urging them to win every tackle for the ball, ready to explode at a powerful shot? Ready for the excitement of flying wingers, overlapping backs, curling corners, slick one-two passing and goals scored with panache? Ready for another moment in a fantasy world?"

“Yes! We are ready!! And so are Pixecute and Creative XL who remixed some vintage 'Coca-Cola' football ads. A true tribute to the sport that unites us all…

Is she a Victorian pin-up, a girl next-door, a movie star, a party hostess, a factory worker or a swimsuit beauty? Her demeanor is radiant, vivacious and breezy. She exudes youthful energy and appears picture perfect wherever she goes, dressed up in the latest fashion.

When ‘Coca-Cola’ started in the 1890s portraying these independent women, it was still a uncongenial time for a girl with big ideas. Women were discouraged from thinking beyond household drudgery, and derided if they distinguished themselves. From these early days, ‘Coca-Cola’ has used the girl portraits in unique ways, always running miles ahead of the times. ‘Coca-Cola’ encouraged and inspired women to live their lives to the fullest and share life experiences.

Far away from the proper etiquette, the ‘Coca-Cola’ girl spreads her wings, chooses hobbies of the modern age and makes a lot of fun. She is traveling, sporting, sunbathing, inviting her friends over, flirting…

From the portraits of cheerleaders at the soda fountain to the ones of iconic actresses and women in flight suits: as a symbol of women’s emancipation, it could hardly be bettered.

It's a beautiful summer day. An incredible blue sky, the sun is shining. Like Bob Marley sang: "The weather is sweet, yeah, make you wanna move your dancing feet". Celebrate! Dance on a table, play frisbee, make ice cream, eat watermelon, drink an ice-cold ‘Coca-Cola’, run through a sprinkler, walk through the grass barefoot, blow a dandelion, smile at a stranger, twirl until you're dizzy, catch a firefly, splash in a creek...

Enjoy this most glorious of seasons. Hmmmm!

Since its early days, Coca-Cola has played an eminent role in the visual culture of several generations.

By continually challenging artists and agencies to create images for its wide range of communication, Coca-Cola also functioned as a catalyst for creative expressions, right ideas at the right time…

The original Coca-Cola illustrations were drawn by masters as Haddon Sundblom or Gil Elvgren with their loving, magical touch. Some of the early Coke images are playful, romantic, cartoony, imaginative; others are trendy and stylized but they are always signs of their times.

The concept of the Remix project is simple. Every selected artist makes a “Coke Side of Life” Remix of historic Coca-Cola visuals and creates a new visual inspired by the brand and its soul, a thematic interpretation.

Togetherness - feeling connected to your family and friends, a community and the planet is the first step to tear down the barriers between cultures.

Deep down inside, we are all social creatures who find our greatest fulfillment and happiness when we are connected in positive ways to the people that surrounds us. Perhaps this is our real goal: to feel good about our lives and share this feeling of happiness with others.

In the 21st century global community, lives all over the planet intertwine more than ever through communication technology and the travel democracy. If nowadays generation is taught that our interpersonal, cultural differences are a rich heritage, a tribute to the unique character of our species, they will enthusiastically embrace diversity.

In many ways, we could say that ‘Coca-Cola’ has always embraced this idea: make the world a little bit better by passing on happiness by building understanding of and appreciation for the differences in human beliefs and cultures. By fostering the sense that, in the most profound way, we are all one family, the human family.

No wonder that ‘Coca-Cola’’s ‘Hilltop’ spot was one of the most successful TVCs ever produced. Its huge success can not be explained simply because the images were appealing and the tune catchy, but because the message taps into a profound, human longing for community.

Ancient Egyptians began bowling in about 5200 B.C. German and British people also enjoyed the game, but it was the Dutch settlers who brought their version of “Dutch pins” to America in the 16th century. They played their games in the middle of Manhattan, which is still sometimes referred to as the “Bowling Green.” Originally a nine-pin game, bowling in New York attracted some shady characters and was eventually outlawed; in order to get around the gambling laws that prohibited it, alley owners simply added another pin. And the rest is history.

Lumbered with the Fred Flintstone image for years, tenpin bowling has recently found a retro-cool status among the young and the fashionable.

If you travel to Atlanta, hometown of ‘Coca-Cola’, you should check out the new Ten Pin Alley in Atlantic Station. The place is owned by cool cats Ashton Kutcher and Wilmer Valderrama, servers wear vintage-inspired bowling shirts and the dj plays very groovy tunes. So ‘pick a cherry’ and ‘hammer the pocket’. Fabulous atmosphere and a guaranteed good time!

For all the bowlin’ lovers out there: here you can see an original ‘Coca-Cola’ poster from the forties plus the Remix version. Enjoy!

The Coca-Cola iconic artworks serve as a blueprint and inspiration for new design impulses. The creative potential of the Remix project aims to draw out the hidden child in all of us. Elements from early-day-visuals are picked out, cut and pasted into a new visual.

The combination of the iconic footage with the contemporary Photoshop / Illustrator styles gives the opportunity to rediscover these images anew. The visuals are recognizable as vintage Coca-Cola but yet have a fresh feel.

The work of the Remix artists reflects various styles, personalities and cultures and the project shows how vibrantly creative the collaboration of a design network can be.

The diverse backgrounds of the contributing artists have resulted in a multifaceted world of imagery that draws its freshness from the mixture of approaches. Their mission is to spread an optimistic look at the world and help people realize how contagious happiness is. By combining iconic Coca-Cola images with up-to-date illustration techniques and styles, the artists have given rise to a progressive style of visual expression.

Really? get your own conclusions:

a.The Volkswagen Beetle was a revolutionary economy car produced by the German automaker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003. It used an air-cooled rear engine rear wheel drive (RR layout). The beetle was more comfortable and powerful than most European small cars, having been designed for sustained high speed on the Autobahn, and ultimately became the longest-running and most-produced automobile of a single design. It remained a top seller in the US, even as rear-wheel drive conventional subcompacts were refined, and eventually replaced by front-wheel drive models.

b.The famous “LEMON” Ad campaign created by “Doyle Dane Bernbach” in 1959 is considered one of the best 100 advertising campaigns of all time. It was revolutionary at the time. (check it this site: www.greatvwads.com/)

c. I did own one. It was my first car and I loved it. It gave me a lot of freedom during my college years. It was green, and a 1982 model full of rusty goodness!

I keep watching really smart people just kicking the can down the road instead of really making hard decisions that would solve the current global economic mess. Putting lipstick in a pig will not fix what is broken…

COCA-COLA SIDE OF LIFE ART REMIX

www.coca-cola-art.com
