Creating Healthy Work Environments

Austin, Texas, USA

Day 2 - 11 February 2023

A place to sit and chat (and in the spring be inspired?) at Northeastern University.

Our Maker Art class created a Time Machine this year, inviting you to travel through time from the age of dinosaurs to the 50th century.

Our 4th and 5th graders at the Lycée Français designed their own scenes from the past, present or future, and brought them to life with motion, lights and sounds. They also worked in teams to build interactive features like illuminated keypads, spinners and doors, using the popular Arduino platform.

In our after-school classes, we combine art, technology and storytelling to help children create their own magical worlds. They learn to design their ideas, build them with a variety of tools, animate them with electronics and tell their stories. This unique multimedia course helps them develop their creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills -- and builds their confidence that they can help change the world.

This year, we had a really good group of 9 students, ages 8 to 11 -- many of whom had taken our Maker Art classes before. They were very creative and engaged, and did a great job presenting their work at the Lycée Français -- and at Marinovators at the College of Marin on April 22.

This Maker Art class was taught by Fabrice Florin and Edward Janne at the Lycée Français in Sausalito in winter 2017. We met every week for 12 workshops of 90 minutes each, Thursdays at 3:30pm, from January 5 to March 30, 2017. Our teachers are part of the Tam Makers learning community and we prepared materials for this project in our state-of-the-art makerspace at the nearby Tam High School.

This was my submission, "Create..." to the 1st Annual Chain-link Fence Art Exhibition and Competition. Had a lot of fun with this, inspired by chain-link fencing of which I’ve never worked with before, tricky stuff ;) My arms got a work out.

MATERIALS: a 4 ft. x 4ft. scrap piece of chain-link fencing, a found barbeque grill (web), crystals, glass beads, found metal nuts/bolts/washers, metal wire and scrap telephone wire. I wanted people to discover the message in the spider’s web, “create” that would tie into the leading ant’s message of peace, happiness, laughter, love, opportunity, dreams, something(!). It’s good fun if we choose to create positive things for ourselves and the world :)

If you are curious about the process and the other versions/redo’s that went into this piece, please visit my blog to see more!

One last photo from me, taken with my iPhone 6 at a local arboretum with gardening plots available for individuals. Earlier this month, I was thrilled to see this colorful garden with its soil, fertilizer, watering can, and rake. It seems all set up for our CreatING month.

A look around Leasowes Park in Halesowen.

The Leasowes

The Leasowes is a historic landscape, listed as Grade 1 on the English Heritage list of parks and Gardens of historic interest in England.

The site was designed by the poet William Shenstone between 1743 and 1763. As such it is one of the most important and influential landscapes of the 18th Century and is considered to be one of the first natural landscape gardens in England.

Today, the Leasowes is of major historic significance, ranking in importance with such landscapes as Blenheim and Stowe. It is the diverse landscape of wooded valleys, open grasslands, lakes and streams created by Shenstone that makes the site so important for wildlife. The site has been managed with nature in mind since the mid 18th Century and as such provides a wealth of different habitats for birds, mammals, invertebrates and locally uncommon plant species.

The muddy path beyond the Kent Road entrance. At the end I found some steps down to a lower level.

Nice views up here towards Halesowen Town Centre, and beyond towards Hagley.

Creating a chalk garbage truck... J&J of course.

Nell watches closely as Tomas O Maonaigh, an animator, film-maker and educator from Nerve Center shows the kids how to move the figures slightly, photo them with the digital video camera and bring the images into the computer for animation. He was brilliant at describing and getting the kids involved and doing it. Their faces were amazing as they watched what they had created themselves on his monitor nearby.
