Soldiers with the 71st Ordnance Group (EOD) embark on a hike to more than 13,500 feet above sea level with the Special Operations Advanced Mountaineering School’s (SOAMS) senior mountaineering course cadre and students during a culmination exercise Aug. 8 at Tenmile Range, Colo. The 71st EOD Soldiers played the role of an "untrained force", which forces the Special Forces students to incorporate the capabilities and limitations of a partnered force in the planning, preparing and execution of a mission. The two-day exercise included proper safety techniques, rappelling and scaling unforgiving terrain through sun, rain and hail up the side of a mountain. The exercise also provided the EOD Soldiers an opportunity to overcome personal fears and build confidence in their abilities. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. It must be my life's goal* to find the best gnocchi. My primi was a highly generous portion of moist fluffy pillows that were anything but doughy, tough, lumpy or loose.

However a plate like this is what led my dining companion and I to discuss the ordering behaviour of our North American counterparts vs. i.e. what we've experienced separately in Italy: primi + secondi.

Portions as large as this do more than satisfy. They satiate. They also bore the palate. No matter how much I might like gnocchi, after 4-5 bites, I was bored: texture, taste, flavour. Could this be the reason behind a disinterest in food because we simply become bored with it and only continue to consume for sustenance? Given the large portion sizes of our appetizers, this first course (for me), how are people with a smaller appetite than I (I will confess, and not something to be proud of, that I have a very hearty appetite) able to continue to a secondi and dessert after these? I suspect they normally don't. This, when contrasted to folks i.e. in Italy who have this multi-course consumption tradition (although that too could be changing), and possibly smaller portion sizes. I don't mind paying more per unit (i.e. $13 for half of this; or $11 for 1/3) in order to comfortably proceed to the secondi aka main. Alas.

*besides finding the best bread - so far the two Catalan breads I encountered on the first day I was in Spain (Feb 2011) - Sant Pau and Cal Ros - were almost tear inducing, best bowl of pho, most perfect roasted pork/suckling pig (Iberico suckling pig, El Celler Can Roca, Feb 2011)

I was in Florida the end of January for a week and ran across this guy on the golf course....

He was big enough (about 3 feet) to warrant attention and once disturbed moved fairly quickly but in a sideways motion.

We inquired at the Pro-Shop and they indicated that it was probably poisonous..... anyone familiar with FL snakes and critters?

Manchego, Organic Stilton, Wensleydale / Cranberry. Plus Orange Flora Muscat, Sandeman Tawny Port, Fig Relish, Apricot & Ginger Chutney (great with the manchego), grapes, apple, and some classic Carr's table water crackers.
