My final cake for course one. It was supposed to have twice as many roses on the top, but I was having such a hard time making them that my instructor took pity on me and suggested spacing them out and filling the gaps with petal-y looking sweet peas. AND he made half the roses trying to show me how to do it. I could have chosen a different design for my final, but I chose this one because I *knew* I needed to practice the damn rose. Ugh! Still, white on white was a very forgiving color scheme and most people I showed this to in person insisted that all the roses were beautiful. But perhaps they were just being polite.
I also rushed the shell border because people were cleaning up and I had just started it. And I don't like the vertical stripes.
Always more room for improvement!
The clubhouse (west) side at Hare Hill, scenic home to Littleborough Cricket Club. Captured before the hosts' 66-run Lancashire League victory over neighbours Todmorden. South African professional Thomas Kaber starred for Littleborough. He struck 126 not out off 128 balls, including four sixes and nine fours, as the hosts posted a total well beyond Todmorden, whose batting was savaged by Ryan Miskella (5-33) and Lewis Willman (3-21). Only visiting professional Chris Schofield, bowled one short of a half-century, put up concerted resistance. He added 51 for the third wicket with Ben Schofield (25). Earlier, Kaber put on 86 for Littleborough's third wicket with Miskella (27). Having quit the defunct Pennine League over the winter, Littleborough are newcomers to the Lancashire League for 2018.

In South France, bullfighting is known alternately as "course libre" or "course camarguaise". This is a bloodless spectacle (for the bulls) in which the objective is to snatch a rosette from the head of a young bull.
For a period of about 15-20 minutes, the raseteurs compete to snatch rosettes (cocarde) tied between the bulls' horns. They don't take the rosette with their bare hands but with a claw-shaped metal instrument called a raset in their hands, hence their name. Afterwards, the bulls are herded back to their pen by gardians (Camarguais cowboys) in a bandido, amidst a great deal of ceremony. The star of these spectacles are the bulls, who get top billing and stand to gain fame and statues in their honor.
Although the course camarguaise does not end in the death of the bull, it is at least as dangerous to the human contestants as a corrida.
