Cooper Lake in Woodstock, New York is the largest natural lake in the Catskill Mountains. Even so, it has been expanded a bit for use as a reservoir to supply water to the nearby city of Kingston.

I was sitting photographing songbirds chipmunks and squirrels at one of my feeders when one of the songbirds spotted this fellow a Coopers Hawk I believe, incoming. There was an alarm call from one of the birds and then a mad scramble of feathers and fur as every bird and animal at the feeder scrambled for cover. I was suppressed to see him land so close but happy to get his photo and also happy that nobody at the feeder became lunch.

Found a little closer to home, this immature Cooper's hawk was hunting house sparrows along Brydon Lagoon in Langley. I think the twigs in front of the bird represent the way I have mostly seen this raptor as it hunts in the under growth for the smaller birds.
