It's been a while since I posted some good Cooper shots. So here you are.

After eating the shrew, the vocal young Cooper's Hawk flew back to the nest!

Now the story gets really sad. Three days later, on August 24, this young hawk was on the ground under the nest tree, barely able to move. I took her to Fellow Mortals Wildlife Hospital, where she (they said she was a female) was admitted with body trauma and right leg and foot paresis (weakness, loss of voluntary movement). The cause of her injuries was unknown. She did not survive.

Cooper Young Festival 2013

I found this Coopers hawk chasing some of my crows today! I'm pretty sure it's one of the hawks I watched this summer, further up the creek. I was walking along, looking right above me, when I heard a crow, unusually loud and coming my way! I lowered my gaze to find four crows coming right at me with this coopers Hawk right behind them! They all passed about ten feet to my right!!! Breath taking!!!! At one point a crow made a hard turn, and the hawk did a half loop and roll-out at the top, straight for the crow! Fighter pilots probably have a word or phrase for the maneuver. My words for what I saw is 'OVER THE TOP AWESOMENESS'! A very exciting day of bird watching today! Oh...and...the hawk didn't catch a crow! :)
