After the three young hawks moved out of the nest, first to branches in the nest tree, then to nearby trees, they often returned to the nest, sometimes singly, sometimes together. One young hawk continued to spend a lot of time in the nest.

This Cooper's Hawk was perched on top one of my bird feeders when I got home from work today. He sat there long enough for me to grab my camera and take LOTS of photos before moving to a second window for more photos.

I can't help but wonder what he was thinking by sitting on top of the feeder? It's not like any bird is going to show up as long as he's perched there. hehe

A great day for raptors at the slough. (eagles,RTH,Coopers,Rough legged,Harriers, merlin,) Almost as good as a good day at BBay. A couple of owls would have made it outstanding.

Cooper's Hawk at the Montlake FIll, just north of the SW pond. This one hopped up to the perch just as I walked up and let me get fairly close.

Now, I suppose this could be a Sharp-shinned hawk. It seemed too big to me to have been one though. Arguments in favor of it having been one are welcomed.

Cooper is not much of a toy dog, but he makes an exception for this mouse I bought from Ikea last year. It has a little rattle in the drum and he loves it.

DSC07229 The Cooper Creek (AKA Coopers Creek) north of Maree in South Australia in the 2010 flood event. The normally dry creek is 1300k long and fed by a number of rivers as it flows inland thru several deserts to fill Lake Eyre. In flood events the creek can be up to 40km wide (how many places in the world do rivers flow into creeks and creeks reach this magnitude!!)

This bird was sitting just a few feet behind the young hawk I found with prey. They don't know the concept of sharing! But this one isn't starving by any means! :)

Todays photos and footage will be the last items I'll add to my Coopers Hawk nest set. Next year, a new set!

Cooper's hawks are accipiters, forest-dwelling hawks

with short, rounded wings and long tails. Their tails act like

rudders to help them maneuver in and out of trees to pursue prey.

We have these and sharpshinned hawks as well, both

like to feed on song birds. But the Cooper's hawks have

been known to take chipmunks and squirrels.

This beautiful Coopers Hawk landed on our bird feeder on a very dark drizzly day. 6400iso is higher than I like to use, but I was forced into it due to inadequate lighting.
