I don't know if other thru hikers found this gem, but it's always been my favorite waterfall of the Angeles National Forest!
It's ironic that I've failed to find a hawk this winter while driving around. Then early one morning this hawk appeared in the tree behind my house!
The lighting was a challenge so it took a little work with DxO DeepPrime 2, Topaz Sharpen AI, and Lightroom Classic.
I thought my Cooper, Theo, deserved a Polaroid :) This didn't turn out at all like I'd hoped, though. The blurry blob in the foreground is a tiny toy MINI that my friend gave me years ago. Oh, well.
My Grandfather went to Cooper, and he said that back in the day, it was a rough school, that the teachers didn't take any crap from the students.
It was very dark and misty and this guy was a long way up but I haven't really taken a pic of a cooper b4 and I was excited so I changed it to look a bit like a painting. It's OK but I sure hope to get a really really clear one in the New Year. I love taking wildlife pics but haven't had much of a chance lately! cooper hawk dec 2011 IMG_7641
Coopers Hawk at the CRC with a wing injury due to a gunshot. Coopers Hawks belong to the accipiter family of hawks. They have shorter and narrower wings along with very long tail that acts like a rudder to help them zip through the woods.
The Cooper Female Academy was founded in 1844 to provide a school for daughters. The trustees, Samuel Forrer, D. Phillips, Robert W. Steele, Robert C. Schenck, and R. Green, donated a tract on First Street between Perry and Wilkinson Streets to the academy. With a liberal subscription by the citizens, a suitable building for boarders and day school was erected and opened in October 1845 with E. E. Barney as principal, eight teachers and 150 students. Many of Dayton's cultured ladies received their education here. The buildings were razed in 1924 and the Westminster Church was erected on this site.

I live next to a small creek a large oak grove. Year round I see lots of birds and I always see hawks. Yet they are always flying high and out of reach for my 70-200.
Today was my lucky day, I walked out side and an amazing Cooper's Hawk was sitting about 15ft from me. I rarely see them perch so low to the ground so I was super excited!
Among the bird world’s most skillful fliers, Cooper’s Hawks are common woodland hawks that tear through cluttered tree canopies in high speed pursuit of other birds.

There were two Cooper's hawks setting in the same tree, I think both were mature males, so I think what you see here is both hawk flexing there wings and tail feather showing who is tougher, maybe a territorial thing, a very dark and cloudy day, but what else is new.
There appears to be two youngsters that were raised in the old nest this year. The parents are gone now.
Introduced in 2002 as a completely new design, the BMW MINI Cooper is a throwback to its ancestor of the same name, mimicking its appearance and performance. Whilst the car has been criticized for its poor space-efficiency compared with the original Mini (despite its significantly larger size), its faithfulness to the original's razor sharp handling characteristics and its unique styling has seen the BMW MINI become a sales success in Europe and (since its introduction in 2002) in the U.S.
BMW has received a significant backlog of orders throughout the life of the car and the Cowley factory is working at its full capacity of around 100,000 cars per year; all of this with little conventional advertising.
I don't know if this guy thought he was hidden or not but he certainly had all the little feeder birds in a panic. I wondered why there was a sudden explosion of wings and then empty feeders. The question was answered when I spied this fellow perched in a cedar tree across the yard.He was a bit far away to get much detail even with telephoto but I snapped him anyway. He stayed about 15 minutes then moved to a higher vantage point down in the pine woods. It took the little birds another half hour to recover their composure.

Typical August weather - cool and often wet - marine air is drawn in off of the gulf of Alaska and the Bearing Sea toward the semi-permanent low pressure area that builds up over the interior during the summer. Wind gusts repeatedly flattened our 4-season tent every night on this trip. We splurged on a better tent for the next trip...

Cooper Congregational Church
Michigan Registered Historic Site
---
In 1843 the Reverends Mason Knappen and Ova Hoyt organized the Cooper Congregational Church with families from New York and Vermont. Church founders included Laura Blanchard, John and Betsy Borden, Mace, Nancy and John Borden, Matilda Delano, David Deming, Eliza Earl, Lydia Hart, Fidelia Pratt, William and Susan Lyman and Almon and Phoebe Monroe. These members first worshiped in a log schoolhouse at Cooper Centre. The present church was erected in 1856.
---
This church was build in 1856 with money raised from the sale of family church pews -- a popular fund-raising method used in New England and New York. Ephraim Delano, George Delano, George Hart, A. R. Allen, A. W. Ingerson, Allen Chappell and John Walker built the church on land donated by Barney and Eliza Earl. The cornice returns, triangular pediments and square louvered belfry, containing a bell cast by Meneely & Kimberly of Troy, New York, reflect the church's Greek Revival styling.
