I saw this beautiful bird in Chatfield SP
October 2017.Colorado
I am actually not sure if it is Cooper’s Hawk . I don’t know very much about birds, so please let me know if this is somebody else.

I noted in an earlier post that newly fledged Cooper's Hawks often like to lay on branches or lounge in crotches of trees, rather sit up and perch. This one was exhibiting that behavior but concurrently was transfixed by prey birds flying around below.
This cooper was not very happy after chasing a pigeon almost catching it as they flew around a house. The pigeon got away.
When I first came out of university, I could not fathom how I could sit at a desk all day like the old guys did, so I sympathize with the recently fledged Coops that I have been watching which still like to lay on a limb like this, rather than perch all the time like their parents do. I have seen them do this numerous times.
Of course, it is now recognized that sitting at a desk all day is very unhealthy!
SSC 15th Nov. 2025 - Dots and Spots
I'm calling the breast feathers on this hawk, spots. I was really having a hard time getting photos of dots or spots this week. Then on Thursday afternoon, my wife said, "We have a hawk at the birdbath". My camera wasn't quickly available but I had my phone and was able to get a couple shots through the patio window. It's not the first time a Cooper's hawk has stopped for a drink in our garden, but it's rare. They are quite majestic to see up close.
This was the last time I observed a boxcar "Coopered" for grain loading, borrowing the description from wikipedia . ."later grain loaded in boxcars would use metal reinforced cardboard which was nailed over the door opening and could be punctured by a grain auger for unloading" . . . .
This was at Thamesville, Ontario on the Canadian National in June of 1986 and they were loading both cars, note the grain on the ground blown over the cardboard . . Love it ! !
This little guy was perched on a tree in my back yard. I'm glad he stayed around log enough to be photographed.
Cooper's Hawk on favorite branch in backyard. Bird is one half of tag-team that looks for doves at feeder. Other bird is Red-shouldered Hawk.
Went out my back door yesterday morning and while walking around suddenly notice something out of place. I looked up and was standing about 40 feet from this birds. Seldom do I get this close the any hawk. I backed away, got in the the house, grabbed my camera, and managed to get a number of photos over a period of 5 minuses from as close as 25 feet. I believe the bird left because it did not find any birds to capture for a meal because I flushed all of them while taking photos. Cooper's hawks have captured quail, mostly in winter around my house. This shot is heavily cropped. I will upload outcropped photos of the bird latter. IMG_3734
Got some real close looks of this bird. I saw it fly into a wooded area at first... couldn't find it... just about to give up on it, when I turned around and found it perched right behind by me almost at eye level. I must have initially walked right passed it. - Mercer County, NJ. Thanks for looking!

That's his spot. He always sits in his spot. You can't sit there. Why? Because it's his spot.
