I took this photograph at the entry to Lodge Corner during the twelve lap 1950's Sports Car Race at the VSCC's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies race meeting at Oulton Park in June 1993. It's the 6-cylinder inline 3,781cc 1955 Cooper Jaguar T38 of John Pearson, chassis CJ-3-55, one of three cars built by Cooper for endurance sports car racing. One of the cars competed in the 1955 Le Mans 24 Hour race, but retired after 4 hours with an oil leak.

Mom and Dad visit our yard for water a couple times a day but so far none of the kids have flown that far. Taken w/a 1.4 extender. Many more Cooper's in PhotoStream and/or Raptors album.

A week after I first saw the Cooper's with nesting material, I finally found his nest. He was still working on it & I was able to follow him when he flew by with a stick. The nest is very high at the top of a large tree and hard to see. Not a great spot for photography. He is in the nest here and arranging that latest stick. Shaping up to be a large nest.

I was sitting in my van watching the small birds at my feeder and faster than lightning the cooper hawk swooped in. No birds where harmed but it was an exciting few seconds.

Male Cooper's Hawk from my backyard yesterday. I find it ironic I traveled a county over to get a mated pair and here one pops up and cooperates. YAasss!

Click to enlarge. This young Cooper's Hawk has visited our small yard 8 days in a row now; this photo was taken from about 10 feet. He doesn't seem concerned as long as are no sudden moves or any nearby loud noises. Once he tucked his head and took a nap in the shade! He stays on or near a water dish and/or the water feature for up to an hour w/o moving and usually standing on only one leg. He can also see us through 2 sliding glass doors but doesn't seem concerned. Near Tucson, Arizona in the Sonoran Desert. More hawk and raptor photos in PhotoStream and/or Raptors album.

He was sitting in a tree 50 yards from where his mate is sitting in another tree on their nest.

Taking nature's path in Montague (Michigan) brought about an extra special visitor. I think he was just as curious about us as we him. Although considered juvenile, this Cooper's Hawk proved to be larger than expected. One of Michigan's raptors is quite the sight to behold.

A Cooper's Hawk finishes off prey that the younger hawks didn't eat

I believe this is a Coopers Hawk, but I always get confused, between this and a Sharp-Shinned.

I was a bit surprised to see this bird pretty close, and not get scared off. I moved in a little closer and got some shots. Then soon after it suddenly took off, and dove at the water. I am not sure what it got exactly (I think maybe a bufflehead!..), but it basically drowned another bird, and sat in the water for maybe 5 min. Then it suddenly took off, with the carcus into the bushes.

This Cooper's hawk had found a house sparrow in the pile of sticks. After about 10 minutes, the hawk flushed the house sparrow out. The house sparrow flew off quickly with the Cooper's hawk in hot pursuit.

I saw this Cooper's while doing dinner dishes. He/she then flew to another neighbors tree. Spotted him/her after my evening walk.

A walk in the river valley turned up two juveniles and one adult.

I photographed the juveniles, and was not able to get shots of a third hawk which I think was an adult.

A Pigeon Lunch for this Cooper's Hawk, Newburg, PA - Cumberland County - 05 JAN 19

Cooper's hawk (Accipiter cooperii) is a medium-sized hawk native to the North American continent and found from southern Canada to Mexico.[2] This species is a member of the genus Accipiter, sometimes referred to as true hawks, which are famously agile, relatively small hawks common to wooded habitats around the world and also the most diverse of all diurnal raptor genera.[2] As in many birds of prey, the male is smaller than the female.[3] The birds found east of the Mississippi River tend to be larger on average than the birds found to the west.[4] It is easily confused with the smaller but similar sharp-shinned hawk.
