The Captain Cook Memorial is on the lake's edge adjacent to the Jet. It commemorates the various journeys of Lieutenant James Cook, RN, who in 1770 commanded the Royal Navy's HM Barque "Endeavour" on a journey to the Pacific Ocean to observe the transit of Venus across the face of the sun. (This would assist in techniques of celestial navigation.) He then went on to 'discover' and very effectively map the coasts of New Zealand and then the east coast of Australia. (It is widely believed that this 'discovery' was based on Portuguese and Spanish maps that he secretly held.)

His first landing in Australia was at Botany Bay near Sydney (Port Jackson) and it was there that he claimed the land for the British monarch.

Cook was killed by Pacific Island natives while on a later journey. (Source:http://members.pcug.org.au/~prellis/amateur/cook2002.html)

We rented a car for the day & took a drive around Moorea. This is one of the bays on the north side of the island. The adjacent photo shows wide-angle view; couldn't decide which I liked better, so I posted them both.

Mixing up some slimy haunted messy grub!

Let my new little Miniature Ghoul cook is getting ready serve your haunted house guests!

I really like the way the Ghoulish Cook turned out. She is only 4 1/2” tall . She is designed for a 1:12 1'=1" miniature scale haunted dollhouse or Witches roombox. This piece is OOAK (One of a kind) numbered 1/1 and signed by me. This is a adult collectable not intended for children.

As with all my creation they are hand sculpted , painted and will be signed and dated.

A statue of Thomas Cook by James Walter Butler RA stands on London Road, outside Leicester Railway Station. The statue was commissioned by Leicester City Council with assistance from British Railways Community Unit and Thomas Cook Ltd, and was unveiled by Thomas Cook, great-great-grandson of the subject, on 14 January 1994.

Thomas Cook's career as a travel pioneer began in 1841, when he hired a train to take a party from Leicester to a temperance rally in Loughborough. The success of this first trip led him to establish his travel business, and in 1851 he transported thousands of visitors to the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace.

The Paris Exhibition of 1855 drew Thomas Cook abroad for the first time, and within a year or two he was arranging holidays all over the continent. Cook joined the Prince of Wales at the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, and took parties to Syria and the Holy Land. By the 1880s, his firm had obtained a monopoly of Nile passenger traffic and had set up their own fleet of steamers.

Thomas Cook died in 1892 and is buried in Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester. After Cook's death, the business was continued by his son John Mason Cook.

One of our last memories of Southern California was a trip to Ventura County where we visited some islands and had a delicious Vietnamese meal. Bánh xèo, or sizzling crepe, boasted bright colors, rich flavors, and a most wonderful combination of textures. I followed a recipe from Cook’s Illustrated and recreated it in our kitchen, which earned roaring applause from my lovely family. Which element of this dish would surprise you more—the coconut-pork combination, or the turmeric-dyed pancakes?

My Grandfather, Cook, as a young man. The label in the corner identifies the studio in "North Portal NWT." From what I've found on historic maps of Canada much of the western part of the country was the Northwest Territories (NWT) until about 1905. Current maps show a small town of North Portal just across the Canada-North Dakota border. My Grandfather was in North Dakota around 1900.

I like the shirt and tie cut from the same material. I wish I could make out what's on his lapel, looks like some sort of a pin.
