Members of the 688th Rapid Port Opening Element (RPOE), 597th Transportation Brigade, from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., participate in a joint exercise called Turbo Distribution 16-2 from March 6 to March 18. The exercise was hosted by U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC), Air Mobility Command (AMC), Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), and involved the 688th RPOE and the Kentucky Air National Guard’s 123rd Airlift Wing’s Contingency Response Group (CRG). The exercise was intended to test the ability of the RPOE and 123rd CRG working together in a joint environment to establish the opening of a forward operating base. Joshua Burch, Company D, Division Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, assumes a good firing position to make accurate, precise shots during weapons familiarization training at Memorial Range located near Contingency Operating Base Speicher, Iraq, Jan. 14, 2011. Burch, a wheeled vehicle mechanic who serves as a gunner and driver for Company D, is part of the unit's Base Reaction Force. The Company D mission of upholding force protection standards on the COB means that Soldiers, who serve as “The Shield of the Ironhorse,” must maintain a high level of mission readiness.

CONTINGENCY OPERATING LOCATION Q-WEST, Iraq — Salt crystals cover the flagstones of the COL Q-West mayor cell, Jan. 15. Evaporated from rainwater, the frost-white crystals indicate a high salt content in the groundwater and soil, said Sgt. Maj. Perry Campbell, a Senatobia, Miss., native and senior noncommissioned officer of 2nd Battalion, 198th Combined Arms, 155th Brigade Combat Team, out of Senatobia, Miss. “Back in 2005, when the brigade deployed to Iraq the first time,” said Campbell, “I remember seeing people raking up big piles of salt, and they would clean it and sell it.”

CONTINGENCY OPERATING SITE MAREZ, Iraq – “Black Dragons,” 5th Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, fire M109A6 Paladins during a certification exercise, March 16, 2011. The “Red Leg” Soldiers of 5th Bn., 82nd FA Regt., “Black Dragons,” fired M109A6 Paladins, launching 155 mm high-explosive rounds from a firing point at Destiny Range. The firing teams renewed certification on the indirect-fire support weapon prior to the combined arms live fire exercise conducted with Iraqi Security Forces the following day.

Al Quba family welcomes new clinic.
CONTINGENCY OPERATING SITE MAREZ, Iraq— Bashar Gumaa, a resident of Al Quba stands with his daughter inside the Al Quba Medical Clinic after the ribbon cutting ceremony officially marking the clinic’s opening, Feb. 14, 2011. The clinic opened a few weeks ago to meet the medical needs of Al Quba residents, who prior to the clinic had to travel to cities outside the village for medical treatment. “It helps everyone to have a clinic within walking distance instead of traveling to the city,” said Bashar Gumaa, a resident of Al Quba. “If I need to give my daughter a vaccination, I can bring her right here.”

The Vermont National Guard sent a contingency of five soldiers along with Maj. Gen. Steven Cray, adjutant general, Vermont National Guard, to France celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War I. Each state that had National Guard representation in World War I were invited back to France to celebrate the anniversary. National Guardsmen visited monuments, cemeteries, villages, battle sites, trenches, museums, and attended ceremonies as part of their visit. The Center for Military History provided guides throughout the trip.
