A contingency from the Royal Thai Air Force recently visited Travis Air Force Base to see firsthand how the USAF and David Grand Medical Center implements military medical training and manages health care and preventative medicine programs. They also had the opportunity to explore other facets of Travis by touring the Heritage Center, traffic control tower and a static aircraft display. Thailand and the U.S. are committed to strengthening the long-standing relationship and paving the way for continued cooperation between the two air powers. Members of the 688th Rapid Port Opening Element (RPOE), 597th Transportation Brigade, from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., participate in a joint exercise called Turbo Distribution 16-2 from March 6 to March 18. The exercise was hosted by U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC), Air Mobility Command (AMC), Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), and involved the 688th RPOE and the Kentucky Air National Guard’s 123rd Airlift Wing’s Contingency Response Group (CRG). The exercise was intended to test the ability of the RPOE and 123rd CRG working together in a joint environment to establish the opening of a forward operating base. CONTINGENCY OPERATING SITE MAREZ, Iraq – “Black Dragons,” 5th Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, fire M109A6 Paladins during a certification exercise, March 16, 2011. The “Red Leg” Soldiers of 5th Bn., 82nd FA Regt., “Black Dragons,” fired M109A6 Paladins, launching 155 mm high-explosive rounds from a firing point at Destiny Range. Al Quba family welcomes new clinic.
CONTINGENCY OPERATING SITE MAREZ, Iraq— Bashar Gumaa, a resident of Al Quba stands with his daughter inside the Al Quba Medical Clinic after the ribbon cutting ceremony officially marking the clinic’s opening, Feb. 14, 2011. The clinic opened a few weeks ago to meet the medical needs of Al Quba residents, who prior to the clinic had to travel to cities outside the village for medical treatment. “It helps everyone to have a clinic within walking distance instead of traveling to the city,” said Bashar Gumaa, a resident of Al Quba. “If I need to give my daughter a vaccination, I can bring her right here.”

The Vermont National Guard sent a contingency of five soldiers along with Maj. Gen. Steven Cray, adjutant general, Vermont National Guard, to France celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War I. Each state that had National Guard representation in World War I were invited back to France to celebrate the anniversary. National Guardsmen visited monuments, cemeteries, villages, battle sites, trenches, museums, and attended ceremonies as part of their visit. The Center for Military History provided guides throughout the trip.

Efren Nila, mortar section leader, who hails from Manassas, Virginia, serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 1st Advise and Assist Task Force, explains loading procedures for a 120mm mortar system to Cpl. Fahad Lafi and his Iraqi soldiers serving with the Artillery Battery, 47th Brigade, 12th Iraqi Army Division. Nila explained to the Iraqi jinood, Arabic for soldiers, that it is a critical safety requirement to keep their hands clear from the front of the mortar muzzle during loading procedures. The squad leader supervises the enforcement of safety procedures to prevent injuries to personnel or damage to equipment.

To honor outstanding service at the end of the deployment, the senior noncommissioned officers of the 2-198th CAB – to which A Company, 106th BSB, is attached – recognized seven Soldiers throughout the battalion, each of whom embodies one of the Army values of loyalty, duty, respect, service, honor, integrity and personal courage, said Campbell.
