An eastbound container train passes the station behind a single Metrans locomotive. The 386 005 is a Bombardier TRAXX, like the DB one that we saw a few days ago in Salzburg. Metrans is a Czech operator that handles container freight throughout central Europe.

The port of Bremerhaven is the sixteenth-largest container port in the world and the fourth-largest in Europe with 4.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of cargo handled in 2007 and 5,5 million in 2015. The container terminal is situated on the bank of the river Weser opening to the North Sea. In the wet dock parts, accessible by two large locks, more than 2 million cars are imported or exported every year with 2,3 million in 2014. Bremerhaven imports and exports more cars than any other city in Europe. Another million tons of "High-and-Heavy" goods are handled with ro-ro ships. In 2011 a new panamax-sized lock has replaced the 1897 Kaiserschleuse, then the largest lock worldwide. [Wikipedia

If you get a chance to visit Vancouver, be sure to check out "sunset beach" on the south-west side of Stanley Park.

In addition to some great views of the mountains / ocean, you might see some of the many container ships at anchor.

Some interesting facts about the Port of Vancouver:

There are 28 major sea terminals, including 2 cruise terminals, automotive terminals, bulk and break bulk terminals.

More than $75billion CAD worth of cargo is shipped through Vancouver, which equates to more than 2,800 foreign vessels a year.

If you enjoy watching freighters, bulk container ships or other large ocean-going boats, Vancouver is a great place to visit.

4. Student Housing Project Keetwonen, Amsterdam

Here, containers have been used to create 1,000 dorm units for Dutch students, making it the biggest container city in the world. It was launched by Tempo Housing in 2006. Not only does it look hip and provides all the amenities a student could ask for, it also has a rooftop used for rainwater drainage, heat dispersal and insulation of the units below. The award-winning project has received a lot of international attention and is so successful that its planned relocation after 5 years has been postponed until 2016.

Container handlers, such as this one, were a once common sight across the galaxy. These rigs would remove boxes from spacecraft and load them onto lorries for the onward journey. They often specialised in carefully moving small containers of high-value goods. A typical example is the one seen here, which is a refrigerated box of minifigure hands, destined for the greebles trade.

"Architecture is basically a container of something. I hope they will enjoy not so much the teacup, but the tea."
