The church contains over 7500 square meters of mosaics, more than any other church in the world. The intricately detailed mosaics depict biblical scenes and figures, with the fine patterned borders setting off each picture. An elaborate shrine was constructed on the exact place of the Tsar Alexander's death, garnished with topaz, lazurite and other semi-precious stones.

The interior was designed by some of the most celebrated Russian artists of the day, including Victor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Nesterov and Mikhail Vrubel.

Costa Rica

South America

Another orchid I photographed in Costa Rica is in the first comment section – Huntleya burtii.

Oncidium, abbreviated as Onc. in the horticultural trade, is a genus that contains about 330 species of orchids from the subtribe Oncidiinae of the orchid family (Orchidaceae). As presently conceived (May 2014), it is distributed across much of South America, Central America, Mexico and the West Indies, with one species (O. ensatum) extending into Florida. Common names for plants in this genus include dancing-lady orchid and golden shower orchid.

This genus was first described by Olof Swartz in 1800 with the orchid Oncidium altissimum, which has become the type species. Its name is derived from the Greek word ὀγκος, onkos, meaning "swelling". This refers to the callus at the lower lip.

Most species in the genus are epiphytes (growing on other plants), although some are lithophytes (growing on rocks) or terrestrials (growing in soil). They are widespread from northern Mexico, the Caribbean, and some parts of South Florida to South America. They usually occur in seasonally dry areas. - Wikipedia

A nest of Purple Martins will contain a clutch of 4 or 5 eggs which will be incubated for 15 - 18 days between April and August. They will raise only the one brood per season.

This species is the most popular of all back-yard birds in North America.

After the young have hatched both parents feed the chicks foraging in mid-air for most of the insects they catch but will feed amid foliage or on the ground.

When the young hatch it is a busy time around the apartment-style housing they prefer and traffic can become quite heavy as this male and female show while sharing some airspace.

The genus Pulsatilla contains about 40 species of herbaceous perennial plants native to meadows and prairies of North America, Europe, and Asia. Derived from the Hebrew word for Passover, "pasakh", the common name pasque flower refers to the Easter flowering period, in the spring.

Jasmine is a genus of shrubs and vines in the olive family (Oleaceae). It contains around 200 species native to tropical and warm temperate regions of Eurasia and Oceania. Jasmines are widely cultivated for the characteristic fragrance of their flowers. Jasmine can be either deciduous (leaves falling in autumn) or evergreen (green all year round), and can be erect, spreading, or climbing shrubs and vines. Their leaves are borne in opposing or alternating arrangement and can be of simple, trifoliate, or pinnate formation. The flowers are typically around 2.5 cm in diameter. They are white or yellow in color, although in rare instances they can be slightly reddish. The flowers are borne in cymose clusters with a minimum of three flowers, though they can also be solitary on the ends of branchlets. Each flower has about four to nine petals, two locules, and one to four ovules. They have two stamens with very short filaments. The bracts are linear or ovate. The calyx is bell-shaped. They are usually very fragrant. The fruits of jasmines are berries that turn black when ripe. Jasmines are native to tropical and subtropical regions of Eurasia, Australasia and Oceania, although only one of the 200 species is native to Europe. Their center of diversity is in South Asia and Southeast Asia. A number of jasmine species have become naturalized in Mediterranean Europe. For example, the so-called Spanish jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum) was originally from West Asia and Indian subcontinent, and is now naturalized in the Iberian peninsula. Jasminum fluminense (which is sometimes known by the inaccurate name Brazilian Jasmine and Jasminum dichotomum (Gold Coast Jasmine) are invasive species in Hawaii and Florida. Jasminum polyanthum, also known as White Jasmine, is an invasive weed in Australia. 19565

Poike, the oldest volcano:

The Poike volcano was the first piece of land that emerged from the sea and, together with subsequent volcanic eruptions, formed the present territory of Easter Island. Its somewhat remote and isolated location and its difficult access make Poike a little-visited place. However, this mysterious territory contains secret corners and ancient legends that invite to discover it calmly and to know better the past of the island.

Poike, the first volcano on the island:

The name of Poike, usually translated by “hill”, seems to come from the Rapanui expression “Po” (night); “ike” (break) which means “place where the night breaks” because it is the first place on the island that receives the first rays of the rising sun.

Indeed, the Poike is located at the eastern end of Easter Island, and is the oldest of the three main volcanoes on the island, next to the Rano Kau and the Ma’unga Terevaka, which originated their formation. It is estimated that this first eruptive center emerged from the sea about 3 million years ago creating the so-called Poike Peninsula, although its activity was maintained until about 300 thousand years ago. Originally this peninsula was an island but later it was joined to the main body of the island, by lava flows coming from the Terevaka and other nearby volcanic centers.

The Poike is now an inactive volcano with a fairly symmetrical cone shape. The main crater has a circular shape and by its resemblance to a halo of sun or moon was called Pua Katiki, although in another version its name would mean “hill that serves to monitor the cattle.” Unlike other craters, this is totally dry and measures around 150 meters in diameter and about 10 meters deep. Inside a small eucalyptus forest grows that crowns the summit like a leafy green plume visible from afar.

From Pua Katiki, where the Poike reaches a maximum height of 460 meters, a wide plain of gentle slope is observed. which covers an area of about 4.5 km from east to west and 3.5 km from north to south. This large area, almost exclusively covered by a type of grass called here hoi (Sporobolus indicus), ends abruptly on 100-meter-high coastal cliffs formed by the continuous erosion of the sea on the Poike peninsula.

_______________________________________________

For some unknown reason, during the period of construction of the large statues, considered the golden age of the island, it is believed that the inhabitants of the Poike peninsula remained separate from the others and hardly participated in the work of carving in the quarries of Rano Raraku.

One proof of its isolation is that only two of the statues found in the Poike are made of the lapilli tuff of the Rano Raraku, while the rest of the statues were made of the white trachyte coming from the Poike deposits.

Oostkerke is a village belonging to Damme, close to Bruges in Flanders.

From the 10th century on there was some structure built for defence in this place: probably first a wooden keep (tower), later a brick one. The gate building with its two round towers (better seen in my previous photo) dates from the 14th century and some 18th-century parts survived World War I and II as well. However, the castle suffered severely during these wars, so it was restored in the 1950s, in renaissance style. In that period the Dutch landscape gardener Mien Ruys constructed the gardens, which are a valuable part of the castle. Some years ago I had the opportunity to visit them on a day when they were exceptionally open to the public. Although the gardens of Oostkerke Castle are small to English standards, they are varied and intimate, and they contain historical elements such as remains of circular walls, moats and the stone part ('the body') of one of the windmills of Oostkerke. Behind the gate in my photo there is a wooden bridge over the moat.

At least 6 different families owned the castle through its existence. Baron Jozef van der Elst bought the castle in 1937 and financed its restoration - as far as I know, he still owns Oostkerke Castle.

Allan Gardens Conservatory is over 100 years old with a garden-filled greenhouse that covers over 16,000 square feet. This garden is open to the public year-round. It contains tropical plants from all over the world from palm trees to cacti. There are also seasonal plantings throughout the year.

Lilium (members of which are true lilies) is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants growing from bulbs, all with large prominent flowers. Lilies are a group of flowering plants which are important in culture and literature in much of the world. Most species are native to the temperate northern hemisphere, though their range extends into the northern subtropics. Many other plants have "lily" in their common na

Female spiders produce either one egg sac containing several to a thousand eggs or several egg sacs each with successively fewer eggs. Females of many species die after producing the last egg sac. Others provide care for the young for some period of time; these females live one or, at most, two years. Females of the mygalomorph spiders may live up to 25 years and those of the primitive haplogyne spiders up to 10 years.

The protective egg sac surrounding the eggs of most spiders is made of silk. Although a few spiders tie their eggs together with several strands of silk, most construct elaborate sacs of numerous layers of thick silk. Eggs, which often have the appearance of a drop of fluid, are deposited on a silk pad and then wrapped and covered so that the finished egg sac is spherical or disk-shaped. The females of many species place the egg sac on a stalk, attach it to a stone, or cover it with smooth silk before abandoning it. Other females guard their egg sacs or carry them either in their jaws or attached to the spinnerets.

De Zalmhaven, also referred to as Zalmhaven Toren, is a project that includes a 215m residential tower in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Other parts of the project are two buildings of 70m each. The project was approved by the city in February 2010.

The 215m high residential tower houses 295 apartments and a parking garage. The tower and a second office building are designed by Dam & Partner architects, with Claus en Kaan Architecten designing a residential unit it is one of the tallest residential towers in Europe and the tallest building in the Netherlands.

In September 2016, the Rotterdam city council approved the plan. After fifteen years of preparation, construction started on 25 October 2018. With Zalmhaven I, the Zalmhaven has a height of 215 meters. The building itself is 203 m and the mast takes up the last 12 m.

On December 15, 2020, the construction of Zalmhaven II and III reached the highest point. Zalmhaven I reached its highest point in September 2021 and the entire project is completed in 2022.

De Zalmhaven contains 452 apartments and penthouses, 33 townhouses, a parking garage, offices, commercial spaces and a restaurant. The townhouses have a private roof terrace and the apartments and penthouses all have one or more outdoor spaces. The basement accommodates a five-story parking garage with 456 spaces. An inner garden will be realized in the lobby. A roof garden will be realised on the parking garage that is only accessible to the residents of De Zalmhaven. The apartments and penthouses in De Zalmhaven II and III have their own entrance at Gedempte Zalmhaven, but residents also use the facilities in De Zalmhaven I.

One source says the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains range is about 1,000 km (620 mi) in length. Its highest point is 7,090 m (23,260 ft) located 100 km (62 mi) to the northwest of Lhasa. The range is parallel to the Himalayas in the Transhimalayas, and north of the Brahmaputra River. [3] Another source says the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains extend 460 miles (740 km) from Nyêmo County in the west to Ranwu County (the southwestern part of Baxoi County) in the east.

Its highest peak is Mount Nyenchen Tanglha (Nyainqêntanglha Feng) at 7,162 metres (23,497 ft).[4]

The southern side of the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains is precipitous, and falls by around 2,000 metres (6,600 ft), while the northern side is fairly level and descends about 1,000 metres (3,300 ft). Most of the mountains are below 6,500 metres (21,300 ft).[5] They contain 7080 glaciers covering an area of 10,700 square kilometres (4,100 sq mi).[4]

The Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains have an average latitude of 30°30'N and a longitude between 90°E and 97°E. Together with the Gangdise Shan located further west, it forms the Transhimalaya [a] which runs parallel to the Himalayas north of the Yarlung Tsangpo River.

The Drukla Chu river rises in the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, where it is called the Song Chu river, and joins the Gyamda Chu river. The combined rivers run about 100 kilometres (62 mi) southeast to the Yarlung Tsangpo river.

acorns in a plash of water

- Acorn: the typically ovoid fruit or nut of an oak, enclosed at the base by a cupule.

The acorn, or oak nut, usually contains a single seed (rarely two seeds), enclosed in a tough, leathery shell, and borne in a cup-shaped cupule. Acorns vary from 1–6 cm long and 0.8–4 cm broad. Acorns take between about 6 and 24 months (depending on the species) to mature.

Acorns play an important role in forest ecology when oaks are the dominant species or are plentiful. The volume of the acorn crop may vary wildly, creating great abundance or great stress on the many animals dependent on acorns and the predators of those animals. Acorns, along with other nuts, are termed mast.

Wildlife which eat acorns as an important part of their diets include birds, such as jays, pigeons, some ducks, and several species of woodpeckers. Small mammals that feed on acorns include mice, squirrels and several other rodents.

Large mammals such as pigs, bears, and deer also consume large amounts of acorns; they may constitute up to 25% of the diet of deer in the autumn.

Some animals, such as squirrels and jays serve as seed dispersal agents. Jays and squirrels that scatter-hoard acorns in caches for future use, effectively plant acorns in a variety of locations in which it is possible for them to germinate and thrive.

Even though jays and squirrels retain remarkably large mental maps of cache locations and return to consume them, the odd acorn may be lost, or a jay or squirrel may die before consuming all of its stores. A small number of acorns manage to germinate and survive, producing the next generation of oaks.

The plant contains cardiac glycosides, allied to digitalins used in treating some heart disease. These glycosides, when absorbed by monarch butterfly larvae whose sole source of food is milkweed foliage, make the larvae and adult butterflies toxic to birds and other predators.

The American bushtit inhabits mixed open woodlands, often containing oaks and a scrubby chaparral understory ; it also inhabits parks and gardens. It is a year-round resident of the western United States and highland parts of Mexico, ranging from Vancouver through the Great Basin and the lowlands and foothills of California to southern Mexico and Guatemala.

The American bushtit is one of the smallest passerines in North America, at 11 cm (4.3 in) in length and 5–6 g (0.18–0.21 oz) in weight. It is gray-brown overall, with a large head, a short neck, a long tail, and a short stubby bill. The male has dark eyes and the adult female, yellow. Coastal forms have a brown "cap" while those in the interior have brown "mask."

The American bushtit is active and gregarious, foraging for small insects and spiders in mixed-species feeding flocks containing species such as chickadees and warblers, of 10 to over 40 individuals. Members of the group constantly make contact calls to each other that can be described

Oh, dark clouds, what do you contain?

Are your lips wet with rain?

Ready to fall on natures skin

Part the waves, sink within

Fresh from the drama, high above

Filled with wetness and creations love

That falls passionately, again, again

From the skies. filled with hard rain

Today I'm offering a lunch on another golden beach near Recife: Calhetas, and, listen to me, I'll offer you shark meat! I'm joking, sharks proliferate along the entire coast of Pernambuco, that's what came back to my mind when I really tasted shark meat: I was on one of my very first embarkations, at just twenty years old, on one of those dangerous oil tankers (two sank taking with them the entire crew). The ship was old and avoided any checks, almost every ocean crossing we had to stop for a day in the middle of the ocean to fix the engines in the Engine Room. Once, during a stop off the coast of Bombay, we saw a hammerhead shark just over a meter long, approaching the ship. The boatswain (an old and skilled fisherman) threw a fishing line and some white rags into the sea that attracted the shark and after a while he managed to pull it on board and tie it near a bollard. I won't tell you how he killed it. But then he cooked it and I, thinking that sooner or later I could be devoured by some shark, thought of being me to eat one of them first, a slice near the tail cooked on the grill. It was tasty. Then when I told my house they said it was dangerous because sharks contain mercury. But at twenty you are healthy and strong and you can do anything

MALACHI: *To himself.* “Mirror, mirror that is the wall. Who is the handsomest bear of all. Of course it’s obvious that I am the handsomest bear of all. How co…”

DADDY: “Malachi! What on earth are you doing with those shards of mirror?”

MALACHI: “Well, I should have thought that was obvious, Daddy!” *Shakes head.* “I’m admiring my reflection.” *Preens.*

DADDY: “Indeed, they create a multitude of Malachis.”

MALACHI: “Well, one Malachi is hardly enough, Daddy.”

DADDY: *Quietly.* “That is debatable.”

MALACHI: “What was that, Daddy? Do stop mumbling and annunciate your words.”

DADDY: “I was just saying I was going to throw those shards of mirror into the dustbin, Malachi.”

MALACHI: “Oh no! Don’t do that, Daddy!”

DADDY: “Why ever not Malachi?”

MALACHI: “Well, I quite like being a multitude.” *Turns back to his reflection and says to himself.* “Mirror, mirror that is the wall. Who is the handsomest bear of all. Of course it’s obvious that I am the handsomest bear of all. How could anyone think otherwise?”

The theme for "Smile on Saturday" on the 18th of February is "a look in the mirror", a challenge in which a photo must contain a reflection in a real mirror.

A little over a month ago, I was using my full length piece of mirror for some photography in the garden, when a gust of wind blew it over and it shattered against the hardwood planks of my terrace. Oh what a noise it made! So, I cleaned up all the thousands of broken pieces and Hoovered up the millions of tiny slivers and shards, but I was left with a few large pieces that thanks to the backing in the mirror, did not break. I’m British, and being so, I have an inherent wish to save things that “might come in handy one day”, so I kept the four largest pieces of mirror and put them away. It seems that three of the four pieces came in very handy for Malachi to admire himself and create a multitude of Malachis… which may or may not be a good thing. I hope that you like my choice of image for the theme, and that it makes you smile!

If you follow my photostream, you may know that I collect 1:12 size miniatures, some of which have featured in past themes in the "Looking Close on Friday" and "Smile on Saturday" groups. This includes Malachi the bear. Malachi I acquired in mid-March 2020 (and mid Coronavirus) from a wonderful Melbourne stalwart toy shop: Dafel Dolls and Bears, when I went looking for a present for one of my goddaughters. Malachi is designed by Mary and hand-made by Wendy Joy in Australia. He has articulated arms and legs, and an extremely sweet face. Malachi was the name he came with, written by hand on his little tag.

to me they are stories.

MAKE ME SMILE – STEVE HARLEY & COCKNEY REBEL

A bono fide street photographer

took a picture of me

he couldn't wait to show the results

his smile was full of glee

I said it only fair then

to take his picture too

but I am just a point and shoot

one click and that will do

he was happy to oblige

his face was wreathed in smiles

he posed among the superheroes

he added to my golden miles

travelling is such fun and bliss

to meet all kinds of folks

life is a bowl of delicious cocktails

all stirred and mixed and sharing jokes

I never even asked his name

and he didn't ask for mine

we were both happy to be in this moment

sharing our love of photographic lines

we felt a kindred spirit and bathed

in a glowing instant friendship made

and just as suddenly as we had bonded

we parted ways and neither stayed

no backward glances

no fond farewells

but through our photographs

the memory dwells.
