We got a hot tip about the White-eyed Vireo. (Top row photo, next to the King of Snakes.) Drive here, park there, walk a block or two.... Ca-Ching! New bird! And for the brief time it commanded the limelight, we were all mesmerized.

A smallish clot of polite birders gathered off the path. Everyone watching. Vigilantly listening and waiting. We compare equipment and notes. Who has seen what and where they saw it. We are envious of the Orange County birders. We meet Gabriel, a Santa Monica College professor and a Herpetologist. His wife jogs by us with their new baby in a stroller. I like this Gabriel and a smidgen of hope swells in my heart. This new baby will grow up to be a gifted scientist.

We all get a little punchy after explaining to person after person what we are looking for. People walk by with whatever the current version of a boom box is called. Loud-music-to-go because the world without continuous or constant noise is obviously unbearable.

We take turns ignoring people. We size up the curious folk before we talk. Carrying binoculars or a camera gets you in. Clownish loudly patterned yoga wear merits a dumb answer. "We are watching squirrels." Gabriel snorts but I know I could have been kinder. I make myself a promise to be less mean. Maybe Gabriel's child will develop a cure for meanness.

W9 and Jerry got the Chat as a life bird at Malibu Creek State Park. We were on the lookout for the chat after using the ebird Explore the Hot Spot tool. He put on a song and dance show for us. Thrilling, but be quick if you want a photo.

And have a gander at the red crustacean deal in the second row. How can you scream and focus a camera at the same time??? Asking for a friend.

The green landscape we experienced a few months ago is rapidly fading. Birds have disappeared. Migration and nesting. They have left or they're hiding.

Slowly my bird list is growing.

The original lists were probably carved in stone and represented longer periods of time. They contained things like "Get more clay. Make better oven." David Viscot

I kicked off this year with a quick trip to the Bakony. After waiting around for snow for days, constantly checking the weather forecast I just decided not to waste any more time and fixed a Friday morning "appointment" with a friend at Eplény.

Despite the lack of snow, the weather was incredibly cold, yet the Class M47 loco hauling some of the passenger trains still had all possible hoods opened for extra ventilation - I wonder how much longer before it falls apart.

Next to these weird Bzmot replacement trains, the rest are still being hauled by Remotorised Class M41 locos on Line 11. In this image, one of such trains is visible, as it is entering a combination of curves near Eplény.

For almost two years now, the shunting trains have been moved to run during the night, leaving only the passenger trains to shoot for the trainspotters. Of course, there are always exceptions, but more on that later!

Apparently, there's a constant battle between the City of Seattle and photographers.

I watched these two carrion crows for over half an hour the other weekend. They were constantly pecking each other and would not let go and were still at it when I left. It was interesting watching the behaviour of the other crows as they occasionally ventured close seemingly intrigued with what was going on

Even with a notebook as a constant companion, so many thoughts I want to write down vanish like stars with the daybreak before I can commit them to paper. Sometimes, though, I get lucky and am able to jot something down before it fades away. Even if I never share what I write, it’s a tiny delight to be able to have it solidified on paper.

Any trip to the rugged Washington coast is worth the long drive and early morning departure time. Of course, the lack of sleep is a minor concern. The winter season does means shorter days but longer nights. Being in the cozy confines of a warm sleeping bag helps make life easier, as does listening the constant music of the waves as they hit the shore and slowly recede back where they came from.

There is a beautiful rhythm to this little thing called......life.

It has become crowded again at one of Kyoto's major sights.

Last year, when I also went around 4.20PM to enjoy the evening mood at this picturesque garden, I was one of only a few to be there, esp. in the last 30 or so minutes. This time, there was the old constant flux of group and individual tourists, of elementary/middle/high school students on their Kyoto trip, each of them getting their picture taken. At least, I say to myself, here, one can still move around.

I do not want to know how things are down at Kiyomizu, even though I would really like to get another nightfall shot with the red leaves. But judging from my experience there last year, I will not go there, and instead escape the city for the next few days... :)

Well the snow came a little early this year and I had a day off work so I got a chance to enjoy wandering around downtown Milton with a couple of cameras to capture it before it was all gone a few days later.

The darkness of the horrific harm you’ve experienced tries to completely cover you and somehow you still try to fight it even though you have very little strength left. You work to keep reaching for the light even though it feels impossible and far too painful to do so. Thank you for choosing to stay here, keep breathing and taking steps to engage in this constant, ongoing, painful, extremely exhausting and meaningful battle.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

On constant watch!

Juvenile magpie lark with a lot to learn. It decided to perch in the kingfisher's lookout tree, immediately being dive-bombed by Mr Kingfisher. Not to be deterred, the magpie lark simply moved from one side of the tree to the other with the Kamakaze Kingfisher sending him flying every time.

What really intrigued me is the way wild birds and, it seems, animals will only use the amount of force necessary to achieve a desired result. They don't seem to regard killing and maiming as an end in its own right.

So the end result here was an adult magpie lark coming to the rescue and guiding the youngster away.

As I walked through the valley of covent gardens. I avert my eyes from the hustle of passing crowds to look for the light.

The Church of St. Peter & St. Paul, dating from 1865, is a fine example built in the Norman style in local stone. Its architect was Samuel Sanders Teulon. He was of Huguenot descent, born in 1812 at Greenwich, setting up in independent practice in 1838, and being constantly in demand until he died in 1873.

Teulon's earlier designs were generally in Tudor or Elizabethan styles, but he later became a supporter of the Gothic revival; he also restored and recast many Churches. It was J.J. Maberly, of Hawkley Hurst, for whom he had previously designed a house, who commissioned Teulon to build the Church. It is in stone after a simple design in the Norman style; and the tower is a ? Rhenish Helm?, more usually found on the continent, though there is a fine medieval example at Sompting in Sussex. It is not known what were the reasons for the design being used here, nor indeed for any of the designs for the rest of the Church, which are very restrained and must have been entirely different from Teulon's usual style at that date. At all events he has left us a Church which is both suitable to its surroundings, and extremely attractive in itself, and for which we have every reason to be grateful.

The building is cruciform, though the transverse arms terminated by gables containing rose windows, do not extend beyond the ground plan of the aisles. The nave is divided into three bays. The pillars which separate it from the aisles have elaborately carved capitals, the subjects being emblems of our Lord and of the Evangelists. The corbels supporting the open timbered roof are carved into the forms of the trees mentioned in Scripture, the palm, plane, ebony, vine, pomegranate, fig, gourd, olive and rose of Sharon. The corbels in the aisles are angels.

The east window consists of three lights, above which is a circular window. These are memorial windows and filled with painted glass by Ward and Hughes. In the centre is the Ascension, and on either side, the Baptism of Christ and the Last Supper. The rose window above, depicts Christ in majesty. Windows in the aisles contain figures the Twelve Apostles. Photographs depicting the stained glass windows in St Peter and St Paul church can be viewed by clicking on the following link:
