Just West of Las Vegas lies a little gem called the Red Rock Canyon. To really see the beauty, apparently a hike is required. We tacked this on at the end of a day of driving around the areas surrounding Las Vegas. Sunrise would probably be pretty cool too, but sunset worked well.

Kwita Izina 2018: Conversation on Conservation

On permanent exhibit at our Carriage House is the innovative “Home Green Home” exhibit. This ingenious project created by The Rye Garden Club's Conservation Committee is a miniature model of sustainability. Side by side with the ongoing adaptive reuse of the Jay mansion, it illustrates how "home renovation and historic preservation can go hand-in-hand with environmental stewardship." Historic methods of climate control such as the use of shutters to regulate temperatures in the summer and winter and proper placement of plantings are just as relevant today as they were in the past. Time honored practices of re-using existing materials plus recycling products from local sources remain the ideal. New technological advances, such as low-VOC paints and geothermal heating, further build upon the pragmatic mindset of our Founding Fathers.

The sunny yellow dollhouse has a green roof, thermostats and power strips to conserve energy, a rain garden, permeable gravel driveway, solar panels and more - it is a must see attraction for inspiring young environmentalists. The exhibit and a companion powerpoint slideshow have been incorporated into JHC’s ongoing energy education program “Our Footprints Matter” which is supported through grants by Con Edison.

Our first Concert Salon at the Carriage House surpassed expectations! The historic 1907 Van Norden horse stable is now frequently used for performances because of its unique acoustical environment which many musicians have said makes the structure an instrument in and of itself. The building was teeming with energy and listeners of all ages.

"The Salon" is a renowned performance series which has thrived as a sanctuary of artistic expression in Philadelphia for 26 years. Andrea Clearfield, an award winning composer and curator of the afternoon, helped bring that vision to the Jay Heritage Center, showcasing a diverse array of music spanning genres, regions and periods.

The debut event was a standout success!
