The New Forest Cicada is the last of its kind in the UK.

Rarity: Once found in the New Forest in Hampshire, but there are now serious concerns about its continued existence. It is very likely that it is now extinct in the UK.

Cause of decline: Changes to the habitat and poor habitat management. Extreme isolation of remaining populations.

Mer Bleue Conservation Area, Greenbelt, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Mer Bleue (Bleue Sea in English) received this name because some early morning when the light strikes the mist that blankets the wetland, it creates a blue effect that seems as if you’re looking out over the sea. Located in the southeastern sector of Canada’s Capital Greenbelt, the 3,500-hectare Mer Bleue conservation area provides a unique opportunity to see a northern boreal landscape. The Mer Bleue Bog is approximately 7,700 years old and is a habitat for many species of rare plants, birds and other wildlife. The Mer Bleue Bog is one of the most outstanding natural features of the Greenbelt in Ottawa and is one of its most visited areas. Source: National Capital Commission (NCC)

African Hoopoe (Upupa africana) is a woodland bird fairly common throughout southern Africa. The diet consists mostly of insects, their larvae and pupae. It occasionally hawks termite alates. The African Hoopoe does not drink and gains all of its moisture requirements from the food it eats.

So far I have gathered that Amari is smart and a bit of a thinker. Also he seems be very determined and knows exactly what he wants and how he wants to do it.

On the flip side of that, he doesn't stray too far from his keeper, so he is still very timid but growing in confidence each time I have seen him.

I have to laugh at him when he bolts back into his den. It is like he is running inside to tell mum and dad (Misty & Milo) about all the people looking at him or that he has to tell them that he climbed the rocks without falling....

The Pernambuco Pygmy-owl is, perhaps, one of the rarest owls in the world.

Unlike most owls, the Northern Pygmy-owl is diurnal - meaning it is active during the day, and frequently at dawn and dusk. Also unique among the owls, the Northern Pygmy-owl is not a silent flyer. When it flies, its wings make a buzzing or whirring sound.

Extensive habitat loss has occurred in the region, and the remaining fragments are small and isolated. Any remaining population is likely to be tiny, to have an extremely small range, and to be declining. For these reasons, the species is listed as Critically Endangered.

Here is one last look at H. aureoguttatum's transparent ventral surface. You can clearly see its heart, lungs, and intestinal tract. These little frogs are one of the many fascinating creatures that call the Chocó home.

A spectral Christmas Eve walk at Ivinghoe Beacon.

Despite knowing this walk so well, there were a couple of moments when I lost my bearings in this blanket of fog.

A lot of the farmers around here introduced 3 metre conservation strips around their fields a number of years ago. The idea is to encourage the return of the many endangered species of farmland birds that declined following the introduction of intensive farming techniques. Certainly it seems to have worked with good populations of Skylarks, Meadow Pipits, Yellowhammers and Corn Buntings at this location. Not that I saw any in this pea souper!

In Aug of 2018....The IUCN has up-graded this EVENING GROSBEAK from least concern to VULNERABLE statues.. (One step closer to "Endangered".)

Bright Eyes

Song by Art Garfunkel

Is it a kind of a dream

Floating out on the tide

Following the river of death downstream

Oh, is it a dream?

There's a fog along the horizon

A strange glow in the sky

And nobody seems to know where it goes

And what does it mean?

Oh, is it a dream?

Bright eyes, burning like fire

Bright eyes, how can you close and fail?

How can the light that burned so brightly

Suddenly burn so pale?

Bright eyes

Is it a kind of a shadow

Reaching into the night

Wandering over the hills unseen

Or is it a dream?

There's a high wind in the trees

A cold sound in the air

And nobody ever knows when you go

And where do you start?

Oh, into the dark

Bright eyes, burning like fire

Bright eyes, how can you close and fail?

How can the light that burned so brightly

Suddenly burn so pale?

Bright eyes

Bright eyes, burning like fire

Bright eyes, how can you close and fail?

How can the light that burned so brightly

Suddenly burn so pale?

Bright eyes

This 35 acre ice pond, which froze in the winter, provided blocks of ice for the James Cullen Ice Works, later Cincinnati Ice Co. The blocks of ice were stored until summer in his warehouse. During the summer boats on the Miami and Erie Canal took the ice to Hamilton and Cincinnati, Ohio. The canal opened in 1825 and closed in 1929. This section is now part of the Mill Creek Conservation Corridor and is accessible by a paved bike and hike trail. Beavers recently dammed the pond and killed all the trees growing on it. They slowly lost their limbs and fell to the ground.

Another life bird for me - the second one the same day. The first one was a Blue-winged Warbler. As we were standing by the open area in the trail, this one popped up and sat on a hydro wire for a few seconds before settling down on a log that gave me an opportunity to capture this image. 17 year old female polar bear (Ursus maritimus) named "Tatqiq". San Diego Zoo at San Diego Zoo - a special enrichment morning catching live fish. Conservation status: Vulnerable

This was a beautiful day last summer, Peter & I decided to go for a little stroll on the Elmley Marshes (Isle of Sheppey), it is an RSPB sanctary & a haven for many different birds, we walked a lot further than we intended, past the bird hides, we came across this little building, have no idea what it was used for but an ideal prop for a photographer..............we weren't far away from civilization but could have been in the middle of nowhere, it was so peaceful.

On the southern side of the St Helens Conservation Area is an extensive area of tall sand dunes. Four Wheel driving is allowed in one area but from what I could see they do manage to get to the area near the entrance to Beer Barrel Beach (which is allowed) plus other areas. The dunes are soft and tall with some of the sand covered in grass and other successional vegetation further to this shot. There is a fairly steep drop off to the native bush behind the photo.

The sand dunes are home to some endangered Plovers who nest closer to the beach.

I was only able to go part of the way along the various tracks as I didn't have a 4WD vehicle and was on my own without phone coverage. parks.tas.gov.au/things-to-do/four-wheel-driving-(4wd)/peron-dunes
