Country: Australia

Statement of

Significance: The conservation area consists of a number of important public buildings and a street of relatively intact humble shopfronts and kerbline verandahs, visually punctuated by opposing bank facades. Containing a range of late nineteenth century and early twentieth century structures, the conservation area strongly evokes a sense of the town's past (Criterion E.1).

Description: Koroit is located some miles to the north of the main coastal road, the Princes Highway, and is approximately midway between Warrnambool and Port Fairy. It lies on the northern slopes of the volcanic Tower Hill, enjoying the benefits of rich soil and shelter from the weather from the Southern Ocean. The qualities of the soil have long made the district suitable to intensive cultivation, producing abundant crops of potatoes, onions and peas, usually in association with diary cattle, pigs and fat lambs. The area also once produced mustard, linseed, wheat and oats. The township of Koroit developed to serve the needs of the district. The close settlement and small holdings allowed Koroit to grow into a larger town than would normally be expected within a short distance (17km) from the regional centre, Warrnambool, and from Port Fairy which is 20km distant. The predominant green of year round cultivation and the scale of the district's holdings and buildings have led many observers to see a similarity with Irish landscapes. Commercial Road, the main street of Koroit, is a flat, straight stretch of road. This is the commercial and administrative centre of Koroit and contains a number of interesting late nineteenth and early twentieth century shops, dwellings and public buildings. The focal point of the commercial/administrative precinct is the group of public buildings near the intersection of Boundary/Commercial Road and High Street. Included are the municipal offices and the bluestone post office. The latter was built in 1872 and is of special significance through its link with author Henry Handel (Ethel) Richardson whose mother was postmistress here in 1878; Ethel's father died in Koroit in 1879 and the author used the town for the setting of the third novel in her trilogy, The Fortunes of Richard Mahony. Also included within this precinct are the courthouse (1871-72), and the state school (1878). Also of note at the intersection is the decorative Koroit Hotel with detailing showing Art Nouveau influence (especially in the verandah). Diagonally opposite is the Courthouse Inn, an interesting Edwardian weatherboard building now unlicensed but still used for accommodation. The Commercial Road shopping area runs west from this intersection, consisting primarily of single storey shops although the State Savings Bank and, directly opposite, the National Bank are exceptions. The National Bank in its present form dates from c 1872 when architect George Jobbins was commissioned to remodel the facade and to erect an additional storey. Jobbins was also commissioned to design the premises of the Colonial Bank of Australasia (now the State Savings Bank) in 1876. The design of this bank closely relates to the National Bank in Warrnambool (1868-69) designed by Lloyd Tayler, Jobbins' former employer. Though there are a number of later intrusions in the Commercial Road area, some of them unfortunate, the prevailing kerbline verandah posts and valances are still sufficient to evoke a strong sense of the town's past. This is emphasised by the town's relative isolation, being by passed by all the major district highways.

Did you enjoy this project? Oh yes! Students loved working in collaboration with each other! They were so proud of themselves for problem solving, leadership within the group, and making something look really real.

About: Landscape, Nature, and American Impressionism. J Alden Weir who was an academically trained artist went to France, and was shocked at how the French impressionists were using color. He thought it looked bad. Then he went back home to Connecticut, bought a farm, and painted landscapes. Slowly it dawned on him, that the color theory of the French impressionists was more correct. Warm and cool colors, yellows for light and blue for cold shadows were actually more realistic than black! Also, our lesson also included "atmospheric perspective" to depict more depth.

Volunteer Name: Lycourgas Manlpoulos, Project Location: Costa Rica

Program Dates: March 13 – March 24, 2014, Volunteered at: Sea Turtle (Pacific)

How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country?

Nicky was very friendly. She spoke Spanish very well, and was always prepared. She has much knowledge about the sea turtles.

What was the most surprising thing you experience?

CR reminded me of Greece. I was able to adjust rather quickly to the scenery, food and water. The wildlife was also very surprising. I have never seen a cow with a hump on its back…

What was the most difficult to experience?

There is a lot to get “used to” when you arrive. There is a major shock due to lack of technology and electricity. You must be very social and open since you will be around others all the time. My biggest problem was adjusting to being very dirty every day!

Any tips for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations)

Do not expect to be clean at any given moment. Bring bug spray and bedding, snacks and refillable water bottle, books and deck of cards and obviously deodorant.

Other things volunteers should know

A) Let the cook know about any special diets you have

b) Be aware water may be limited

c) Sand gets very hot!

Personal Paragraph (ABV Testimonial)

This was my very first trip abroad without my family. I was very excited to come to CR to help out the sea turtles and see the culture. This ABV program has definitely broadened my view of volunteering and the culture.

How would you describe your accommodations, meals, security?

I was very happy the cook provided my vegan meals. I like how we were able to travel to Samara to relax.

What was your favorite memory of this trip?

Meeting and chatting up new people and also my own group. I realized all of us had many things in common. Everyone seemed to have bonded at a high level of friendship.

How as the ABV support prior to traveling?

There was plenty of information provided to us so we were able to know what the project would be like.

I felt this information helped us adjust to the project easily and with less stress.

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?

Yes!

Conservation ring-barking may seem like an oxymoron, but it's important to remove this fast-growing competition from the ancient oak pollards on the nature reserve. Ring-barking the birch (Betula pendula) rather than felling it provides standing deadwood, which is great habitat for all manner of small beasties! www.lastingspring.co.uk

The Leasowes

The Leasowes is situated in Halesowen on the southern edge of the West Midlands urban conurbation. It is a 57-hectare public park containing the remains of one of the most important and influential landscapes of the 18th century. The garden at The Leasowes was designed by the poet William Shenstone beginning in 1743 and continuing until his death in 1763. Shenstone created his garden from farmland; forming a diverse landscape of wooded valleys, open grassland, lakes and streams.

Today, The Leasowes is of major historic significance ranking in importance with landscapes such as Blenheim and Stowe, and being listed as Grade 1 on the English Heritage 'Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England'.

I think not!

Scrub clearance started yesterday on our small area of heathland.I was frankly appalled to find this scene this morning!

Instead of making a priority of clearing the birch, oak, rowan & apple saplings in the limited time available they have cut down large areas of gorse and burnt it! No thoughts for the spiders and nests and other insects! I know for a fact there were many spiders nests here including wasp spiders.

I am taking it further and would welcome any thoughts you may have.
