Balenciaga installation 2011: Mellon Conservation Fellow Nicole Bloomfield from LACMA lent her costume and conservation skills to the exhibition. Her graduate school training at Fashion Institute of Technology-NY helped tremendously with the success of the install. Here she is with the costume borrowed from the Galliera, Musee de la Mode de la Ville de Paris, that was nicknamed "the caterpillar dress".

The moving crew moved one oversized shelving unit into the dirty room. We put the flat supplies in, then wheeled in the big blue carts and chairs.

This tiny Norman church lies down a quiet country lane, close to the Trent. It stands near the site of an old Roman fort - they built a military station here by the stone causeway across the river, both now long gone. Roman brick and tile have been used in its walls recalling the empire that brought its civilisation to England almost two thousand years ago.

This is my best shot for the trip. Tisha caught at safety stop (she's looking at her dive computer, waiting for the 3-minute safety stop time to pass), holding a bag full of thrash collected at one of the dive sites in Perhentian.

On permanent exhibit at our Carriage House is the innovative “Home Green Home” exhibit. This ingenious project created by The Rye Garden Club's Conservation Committee is a miniature model of sustainability. Side by side with the ongoing adaptive reuse of the Jay mansion, it illustrates how "home renovation and historic preservation can go hand-in-hand with environmental stewardship." Historic methods of climate control such as the use of shutters to regulate temperatures in the summer and winter and proper placement of plantings are just as relevant today as they were in the past. Time honored practices of re-using existing materials plus recycling products from local sources remain the ideal. New technological advances, such as low-VOC paints and geothermal heating, further build upon the pragmatic mindset of our Founding Fathers.

The sunny yellow dollhouse has a green roof, thermostats and power strips to conserve energy, a rain garden, permeable gravel driveway, solar panels and more - it is a must see attraction for inspiring young environmentalists. The exhibit and a companion powerpoint slideshow have been incorporated into JHC’s ongoing energy education program “Our Footprints Matter” which is supported through grants by Con Edison.

Our first Concert Salon at the Carriage House surpassed expectations! The historic 1907 Van Norden horse stable is now frequently used for performances because of its unique acoustical environment which many musicians have said makes the structure an instrument in and of itself. The building was teeming with energy and listeners of all ages.

"The Salon" is a renowned performance series which has thrived as a sanctuary of artistic expression in Philadelphia for 26 years. Andrea Clearfield, an award winning composer and curator of the afternoon, helped bring that vision to the Jay Heritage Center, showcasing a diverse array of music spanning genres, regions and periods.

The debut event was a standout success!

Balenciaga installation 2011: Several costumes were lent by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. As is usual with the V&;A, the costumes all arrived in mint condition, at least 1/2 of them ";pre-dressed" on custom mannequin forms in custom crates, as seen in this image before the protective shipping coverings were removed.

Hummingbird after water rinse. Pulaski County MO

Volunteer Name: Lycourgas Manlpoulos, Project Location: Costa Rica

Program Dates: March 13 – March 24, 2014, Volunteered at: Sea Turtle (Pacific)

How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country?

Nicky was very friendly. She spoke Spanish very well, and was always prepared. She has much knowledge about the sea turtles.

What was the most surprising thing you experience?

CR reminded me of Greece. I was able to adjust rather quickly to the scenery, food and water. The wildlife was also very surprising. I have never seen a cow with a hump on its back…

What was the most difficult to experience?

There is a lot to get “used to” when you arrive. There is a major shock due to lack of technology and electricity. You must be very social and open since you will be around others all the time. My biggest problem was adjusting to being very dirty every day!

Any tips for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations)

Do not expect to be clean at any given moment. Bring bug spray and bedding, snacks and refillable water bottle, books and deck of cards and obviously deodorant.

Other things volunteers should know

A) Let the cook know about any special diets you have

b) Be aware water may be limited

c) Sand gets very hot!

Personal Paragraph (ABV Testimonial)

This was my very first trip abroad without my family. I was very excited to come to CR to help out the sea turtles and see the culture. This ABV program has definitely broadened my view of volunteering and the culture.

How would you describe your accommodations, meals, security?

I was very happy the cook provided my vegan meals. I like how we were able to travel to Samara to relax.

What was your favorite memory of this trip?

Meeting and chatting up new people and also my own group. I realized all of us had many things in common. Everyone seemed to have bonded at a high level of friendship.

How as the ABV support prior to traveling?

There was plenty of information provided to us so we were able to know what the project would be like.

I felt this information helped us adjust to the project easily and with less stress.

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?

Yes!
