The Australian wood duck, maned duck or maned goose (Chenonetta jubata) is a dabbling duck found throughout much of Australia. It is the only living species in the genus Chenonetta. Traditionally placed in the subfamily Anatinae (dabbling ducks), it might belong to the subfamily Tadorninae (shelducks); the ringed teal may be its closest living relative.

How is it possible that centuries-old paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Rubens still look so good today? This is partly thanks to conservators, who ensure that paintings are preserved in the best possible way.

The exhibition Facelifts & Make-overs shines a light on what usually remains out of sight, namely the conservation of paintings. What is conservation? Why is it necessary? And what secrets do conservators uncover above and below the layers of paint? Welcome to the hidden world of conservation!

The more I read about the preservation of these big cats the one main element that seems to be their demise is the human conflict.

Farmers view them as pests and if they kill their livestock they put strain on the farmers then feeding their family, so the farmer will kill a snow leopard/cheetah/lion for retribution. It seems though that education is now playing a pivotal roll. Not only educating the farmers but their children how to live with these predators ensuring newer generations view the predators differently to generations past.

Many organizations such as the Snow Leopard Trust works directly with herders and communities that share habitat with snow leopards and have identified the specific threats the cats face, and have come up with solutions to mitigate these threats. These solutions really work! In the last four years, there have been no snow leopards killed in the communities where they have conservation programs at work.

Nepal Photo Blog 28/02/11

I woke up this morning to the news that Unified CPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) had directed workers to prepare for a revolt.

www.thehimalayantimes.com/rssReference.php?headline=Facto...

The consitution is due (again) on 28 May and basically Prachanda has said that if the right wing parties continue blocking the process and that the Seven Point plan is not seen through, then revolution will be the result.

Events in North Africa are no doubt helping fuel this thinking but since the end of the People's War in 2006, Nepal has stalled, corruption has increased, the country is in a bad way...

I sit here slightly incredulous at the situation. As western tourists tread along the trekking trails, blissfully unaware of the real situation...and the local people deal with a fragmented "government", electricity cuts get longer, tensions are rising...

There is a saying here "What to do?"

What to do, Kathmandu?

Thanks for looking. This image is part of a photo blog looking at the relationships between politics, people and the environment. I must stress that neither myself or www.wildtiger.org have any political allegiance, we are looking at things as they are, purely from a conservation standpoint, with our eyes open.

Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park covers almost 15,000 hectares featuring majestic arid scenery, comprising spectacular weathered sedimentary rock formations, which have arisen over millions of years from water and wind erosion of what was originally a shallow inland sea.

The shapes which could be mistaken for human-created mounds of sand are in fact natural outcomes of long-term erosion by water and air.

The park is located in the central arid desert area of South Australia, about 25 kms from the opal mining town of Coober Pedy, about 800 kms North of the state capital of Adelaide and 700 km South of Alice Springs.

The area is home to almost 60 native flora species including acacias, mallee and eremophilia. It is also home to a variety of wildlife, including red kangaroos, euro, echidna, numerous bird species and the fat-tailed dunnart (a mouse-like marsupial).

The Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park forms part of the traditional country of the Antakirinja Matuntjara Yankunytjatjara people. It is owned by Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal Corporation (AMYAC). The park is under a unique co-management agreement between the AMYAC, District Council of Coober Pedy and Department for Environment and Water (DEW).
