To protect the Gauntlet, we wrapped it in archival Tyvek. This is a special material that has a slight electrostatic charge on it that repels dust on the outside and attracts dust from the insider of the unit. It has to be held together with special Tyvek tape. It's expensive. Ton's hidden, doing all the work (you can see his knee) , while Judith supervises.

THE MAJOR GOAL OF THE MED RESEARCH PROJECT, CONCEIVED IN 1975 BY THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA GAS COMPANY, WAS TO REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN A TYPICAL HOME BY AT LEAST 50 PERCENT WHILE MAINTAINING, OR EVEN IMPROVING, THE OCCUPANT FAMILY'S STANDARDS OF LIVING AND COMFORT. THE PROJECT USED AVAILABLE ENERGY-SAVING BUILDING TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS, AS WELL AS ADVANCED HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES AND A SOLAR/NATURAL GAS ENERGY SYSTEM FOR HEATING AND COOLING. MED DESIGNERS HOPED TO EN- COURAGE THE AMERICAN BUILDING INDUSTRY TO ADOPT THE PROJECT'S ENERGY-SAVING FEATURES. RESULTS: ENERGY CONSUMPTION WAS REDUCED BY MORE THAN 50 PERCENT IN THE PROGRAM'S TWO RESEARCH HOUSES, BUT THE TOTAL COST WAS TOO GREAT FOR PRACTICAL CONSIDERATION. A SUBSEQUENT PROJECT, MED-II, PROVED THAT SOME MED-I FEATURES COULD BE USED COST EFFECTIVELY.

The August #conservationlands15 Social Media Takeover Continues with an Urban Escape for Your Bucket List - a Ruby Canyon float trip in the McInnis Canyon National Conservation Area!
The Ruby-Horsethief section of the Colorado River, from Loma, Colorado, to Westwater, Utah, is a 25-mile stretch of mostly flatwater with sections of Class I and II riffles. This section of the Colorado runs through beautiful red rock canyons and has many side canyons offering both solitude and day hike exploration opportunities. The Black Rock section is composed of rock known as Vishnu schist, which dates back about 1.7 billion years. This same rock, which geologists refer to as “an unconformity”, is exposed in certain sections of the Grand Canyon. There is an abundance of wildlife including great blue herons, bald eagles, peregrine falcons, mule deer, and desert bighorn sheep. Look up in old cottonwoods trees and you are likely to spot eagles and/or their nests. The put-in is less than ½ hour from downtown Grand Junction, Colorado!

ARGONNE SCIENTIST PREPARES A TEST OF THE CERAMIC HYDROGEN TRANSPORT MEMBRANE.
A TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED AT ARGONNE NATIONAL LABORATORY, THE CERAMIC HYDROGEN TRANSPORT MEMBRANE, RECEIVED AN 2004 R&D 100 AWARD. THE MEMBRANE, CAPABLE OF OPERATING AT HIGH TEMPERATURES AND PRESSURES, PROVIDES PURE HYDROGEN GAS BY SELECTIVELY SEPARATING HYDROGEN FROM GAS MIXTURES GENERATED BY FOSSIL FUEL-BASED PROCESSES, SUCH AS COAL GASIFICATION AND METHANE REFORMING. THIS HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE A KEY TECHNOLOGY FOR THE DIRECT PRODUCTION OF HYDROGEN FROM COAL.

Driving around for work I spotted a Hawk on a limb over looking the road and scanning for prey below. I am always on the look out for wildlife when I am driving and I couldn't help but find a pull off near by and try to take some images when I spotted this one. This is a scene that is extremely common where I live in Missouri. Being able to witness wildlife in action in populated areas is something I have always loved, for me, moments like these provide a break from the hustle and its something that Ive wanted to work to capture because Ive found that if you really pay attention to your areas you will find all sorts of little scenes like this. You don't always have to go far from home to have amazing experiences and create great images.

Pollution at the flood sluice gates on the River Chelmer at the confluence with the River Can near the Essex Records Office in Chelmsford (UK).
Probably not helped by the routine high winter water flow here but surely there's no excuse for this not to be cleared by the Environment Agency or Chelmsford City Council?
The local community must take some responsibility for this too. Plastic bottles, footballs and a lifebuoy do not end up in the river by themselves.
If that automatically operated sluice gate is opened then all this shite will end up on Baddow Meads the natural flood plain and conservation area just downstream from here and beyond.
Shocking.
Well spotted by my regular photostream contributor David and the photograph is posted here with kind permission.

SOLIDS TREATMENT BUILDING AT URBAN WASTE TO METHANE FACILITY.
THIS FACILITY IS AN EFFORT TO PROVE THE CONCEPT OF THE ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF A MIXTURE OF SOLID WASTE AND SEWAGE SLUDGE, TO DEVELOP DESIGN PARAMETERS,TO ESTABLISH ECONOMICS,AND TO DEVELOP DATA ON THE QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF GAS PRODUCED. URBAN WASTE IS SHREDDED AND SEPARATED INTO LIGHT AND HEAVY FRACTIONS. THE LIGHT FRACTION IS COMBINED WITH UP TO 10 PERCENT SEWAGE SLUDGE AND DIGESTED. WHEN OPERATING AT FULL CAPACITY, THE FACILITY IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE ALMOST 300 MILLION CUBIC FEET OF METHANE PER YEAR. THE METHANE PRODUCED MAY BE USED AS FUEL FOR POWER GENERATION IN THE LOCALITY OR CLEANED FOR INJECTION INTO NATURAL GAS LINES. SOLIDS TREATMENT BUILDING SHOWS ROTARY TROMMEL SEPARATOR AT PHOTO RIGHT, CONVEYORS FROM TROMMEL TO SECONDARY SHREDDER, AND SECONDARY SHREDDER AT LEFT REAR OF THE PHOTO.
