Steese National Conservation Area, Alaska

The Steese National Conservation Areas (NCA) provides habitat for caribou, moose, dall sheep, grizzly bear, black bear, furbearers, small game, raptors, waterfowl, and numerous other species of small mammals and birds. One endangered species, the peregrine falcon, as well as bald eagles are known to nest in the area.

Portions of the Steese NCA are used by the White Mountains and the Fortymile caribou herds. Since caribou are migratory animals, the exact location of areas they use may change from year to year as herd size fluctuates and/or migration routes change. The Fortymile Caribou Herd, in international migratory herd, calved in the Steese NCA in recent history. The NCA is an important area for caribou hunting.

Streams and rivers within the Steese NCA are home to a number of fish species, including Arctic grayling, round whitefish, burbot, northern pike, slimy sculpin, and longnose sucker. Small numbers of king and chum salmon are found in some of the larger streams and rivers.

THIS FACILITY IS AN EFFORT TO PROVE THE CONCEPT OF THE ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF A MIXTURE OF SOLID WASTE AND SEWAGE SLUDGE, TO DEVELOP DESIGN PARAMETERS,TO ESTABLISH ECONOMICS,AND TO DEVELOP DATA ON THE QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF GAS PRODUCED. URBAN WASTE IS SHREDDED AND SEPARATED INTO LIGHT AND HEAVY FRACTIONS. THE LIGHT FRACTION IS COMBINED WITH UP TO 10 PERCENT SEWAGE SLUDGE AND DIGESTED. WHEN OPERATING AT FULL CAPACITY, THE FACILITY IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE ALMOST 300 MILLION CUBIC FEET OF METHANE PER YEAR. THE METHANE PRODUCED MAY BE USED AS FUEL FOR POWER GENERATION IN THE LOCALITY OR CLEANED FOR INJECTION INTO NATURAL GAS LINES. VIEW SHOWS NORTH ANAEROBIC DIGESTOR (CENTER OF PHOTO), AIR CONVEYING LINES TO AND FROM CYCLONE ON TOP OF PREMIX TANKS (LEFT) AND BAG HOUSE FABRIC FILTER USED FOR DUST CONTROL (RIGHT).

There's a small conservation park in Belmont right near my doctor's office and I stopped by there on my way home. There's public gardens there and I found lots of bees buzzing around. I took a bunch of shots of this one. He didn't seem to mind the camera.

September 8 through October 4, 2019, HistoriCorps, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging volunteers in the rehabilitation of historic structures on publicly accessible lands, in partnership with the National Elk Refuge, worked to restore the 121 year old Historic Miller Barn.

The Historic Miller Barn on the National Elk Refuge, represents a range of historic events significant to the development of the National Elk Refuge and Jackson, WY. The 30-by-40 foot barn was built in 1898 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The barn is part of the Historic Miller Ranch on the National Elk Refuge. The site referred to as the Historic Miller Ranch includes the original log home or Miller House, the Miller Barn, and a one-room log building that was once used as the original office for what later became Teton National Forest, known currently as Bridger-Teton National Forest.

HistoriCorps is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides volunteers of all skill levels with a hands-on experience preserving historic structures on public lands across America. Volunteers work with HistoriCorps field staff to learn preservation skills and put those skills to work saving historic places that have fallen into disrepair. HistoriCorps works to ensure America’s cultural and historical resources exist for generations to come.

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) are tested at Argonne's Transportation Technology R&D Center.

PHEV technology is part of the President's Advanced Energy Initiative, which emphasizes the development of technologies that can significantly reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil. PHEV is similar to the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), but has a larger battery that is charged both by the vehicle's gasoline engine and from plugging into a standard 110 volts electrical outlet for a few hours each. It is estimated that it can get more than 100 miles per gallon while the vehicle runs primarily on the battery, get more than 30-55 miles per gallon that most of today's HEV achieve. In addition, it may be less costly to drive than a gasoline-powered vehicle; it would draw power from the electric grid when charging.

ARTIST'S CONCEPT OF EXPLODED VIEW OF COMPONENTS OF THE UNIT CELL OF THE ALUMINUM-AIR FUEL CELL.

IN THE ALUMINUM-AIR FUEL CELL, THE ALUMINUM PLATE SERVES AS BOTH BATTERY FUEL AND NEGATIVE ELECTRICAL TERMINAL. AIR ANDA CAUSTIC WATER SOLUTION PUMPED THROUGH THE CELL COMBINE AT THE CATHODE TO FORM HYDROX-YLIONS, WHICH REACT WITH THE ALUMINUM TO PRODUCE ELECTRICITY. RECENT TESTS HAVE SHOWN A PEAK ENERGY YIELD OF 4.25 KILOWATT-HOURS PER KILOGRAM OF AL-UMINUM CONSUMED AND A POWER DENSITY OF 6.3 KILOWATTS PER SQUARE METER OF PLATE SURFACE. THIS INDICATES THAT A BAT- TERY OF 60 UNITS CELLS COULD POWER A FIVE-PASSENGER, 2,900 LB. VEHICLE FOR 250 TO 300 MILES AT 55 MPH WITHOUT STOPPING FOR REFUELING OR RECHARGING. POUND-FOR-POUND THE ALUMINUM- AIR BATTERY PRODUCES 10-15 TIMES THE ENERGY OF LEAD-ACID BATTERIES.

KAPLAN INDUSTRIES RECEIVED A $938,000 GRANT TO BUILD A FACILITY THAT CONVERTS ANIMAL WASTE INTO METHANE GAS. THE CONVERSION PROCESS TECHNICALLY KNOWN AS ANAEROBIC FERMENTATION, USES BACTERIA TO BREAK DOWN COW MANURE AND CONVERT IT INTO METHANE. THE FACILITY PROVIDES 88% OF KAPLAN'S PROCESSING PLANT ENERGY NEEDS, PRODUCING STEAM FOR CLEANUP, HEATING AND HOT WATER AND REPLACING MOST OF THE 6,250 GALLONS OF FUEL OIL PER WEEK USED IN THE OPERATION. DRIED MANURE WILL BE USED TO FORMULATE A 23% PROTEIN RATION. THE NEW 23% FEED PRODUCT WILL BE INERT, SO IT CAN BE STORED INDEFINITELY. THE SYSTEM WILL BOTH DECREASE ODOR AND UP- GRADE THE PLANT'S WASTE WATER SYSTEM.
