Year 7 Connections Day, April 2009

I used to climb these poles and put these wire up, now I sit in an office giving work out to engineers climbing these poles and putting these wires up.

It's called promotion but I would rather be climbing these poles still than sat in a office as I do nowadays.

I miss working outside, even in the rain.

--- RUBINA RAJA HAR ALTID GRAVET I FORTIDEN, OG LIGE NU BEFINDER HUN SIG I CENTRUM AF DEN PÅ CÆSARS FORUM I ROM, Månedens Forsker #10. Carlsbergfondet (08/11/2021).

Prof.ssa Rubina Raja =

Prof. Rubina Raja =

One of the biggest and wildest things I have experienced in my career is since 2018 to have had the opportunity to participate in excavating Caesar's Forum in Rome. That opportunity did not come by itself, but arose from the fantastic collaboration we in Denmark have had over the years with Italian archaeologists. After all, it is not a given that collaborations work.

One must be able to speak a common language and agree on the way forward. And quite agree on how to approach the extensive work that an excavation is. It can sometimes be difficult, because we grew up in different traditions and often come with different disciplines.

Just like Caesar's Forum, even though all archeology provides insight into world history, it still feels almost as if you are at the center of history when you are allowed to dig for objects hidden in the ground in the middle of the late Roman empire. Yes, in fact, exactly where the way for the Roman Empire - led by an emperor - was paved.

And you can sleep without sleep, because it is a very big responsibility. We have to document from A-Z, and once we have excavated an area, it is "gone" and can not be excavated again. But first and foremost, it's amazingly exciting.

Most recently, we have found four nearby children's graves, which will change the way we look at funeral traditions in archaic Rome.

So far, we have only found children's graves as single graves in direct connection with houses, for example under the house floors or just outside the houses. Now we have documentation that children were buried together side by side. It has not been seen before and will change how we see the culture of archaic Rome. At the moment, however, I can not say more precisely how, because we must first begin to interpret our findings into the framework of data that we already have about the culture and society at that time.

*Verbindung hergestellt* (Connection Established) is a project in which 21 pupils from Vorchdorf Elementary School, asylum seekers living in that town, and the Ars Electronica Center Linz jointly produced an exhibition. Working together, the participants got acquainted with one another as a way of reducing or eliminating fears or feelings of insecurity that might exist among them. Plus the resulting public exhibition is a great way to reach lots of other local residents and help them get to know asylum seekers living in their midst.

I don't have any good pictures to upload so you get this instead. It's a copper board on which I laid out connections for an electronic circuit. The visible copper was then removed to leave (under the protective black stuff) conductive traces. Eventually the board was stuffed with electronic components and crammed into a box with jacks and knobs and such. Thrilling, eh?
