Objects exist for decades, centuries or even millennia. Their functions transform over time from utilitarian to symbolic, from direct use by their owners to a ritual, indirect use. Despite their inanimate existence they stipulate a sense of space and time with their tactile and visual sensations. I am attracted to their quiet, flexible, but robust presence. Objects are loaded with their stories and functions as well as the trace of hands that have touched them.

The Sandhurst Military Skills Competition has run in various configurations since 1967. This year, it is a two-day event conducted at the United States Military Academy West Point, New York, April 10 and 11. At its core, Sandhurst is an inter-company competition for USMA. However, West Point teams now compete, not only amongst themselves, but against teams from their fellow United States Service Academies, 8 select University ROTC teams, the United States Military Academy Preparatory School team, and international teams from Britain's Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS), Canada's Royal Military College (RMC) , Afghanistan's National Military Academy and, The Chilean Military School. Each USMA Cadet Company and visiting team selects a 9-member Squad (at least one member must be female) with two alternates. This squad is required to perform a series of challenging military tasks during a rapid, non-tactical move along a partly-prescribed route. (Photo by: Staff Sgt. Vito T. Bryant)
"One of a dizzying number of different “Ugly” configurations, these types of ships are popular with pirates, mercenaries, scavengers, rogue traders, shadow scouts, and other unsavory Outer Rim types for both their dirt-cheap prices and the general availability of replacement (albeit substandard) parts from older generations of ships. Reliability is only a tertiary concern, but a few of these designs are far more sturdy than their outward appearance might otherwise indicate. While Imperial fighters hopelessly outclass them, these craft are more than a match for slow, ungainly tramp freighters that operate far from the relative safety of the star lanes. The model flown by N1-G3L is deceptively deadly, for despite the obvious “cobbled together” appearance common to these types of ships, the base components are *very* high-quality. The hull and outward appearance are based upon a Kuat Systems Engineering Eta-2 *Actis*-class interceptor, combined with partial TIE/Interceptor solar panels, the rear vertical engine setup & heat sink assembly of a Nimbus-class V-wing, and two engines from a hyperdrive ring. To this is added the fusion reactor, Navcomp, and sensor jammers from an RZ-1 A-wing, and the solar ionization reactor, targeting computers, shield generators, class 1 hyperdrive, and passive scanners of a TIE/Defender. The triangle wings of the TIE Interceptor and solar ionization reactor of the TIE/Defender have been modified to work with the two original ion engines of the Eta Actis Interceptor main body now housed in the V-wing vertical engine & heat sink assembly, which now propel the vehicle to a speed of 1350 kph. It has proven capable of handling itself in a fight, and no space is wasted on anything trivial like life-support systems, consumables, acceleration compensators, or environmental controls – because N1-G3L is a droid that does not need such superfluous amenities."

**N1-G3L**
"A self-aware (and rather vocal) custom unit created by the now-defunct NOVA-1 corporation (formerly headquartered in the Corporate Sector), this droid is a quirky blend of gruff, sass, and metal angst. Originally conceived as a low-cost competitor to the far more successful line of IG-series droids, the N1 model (as it was known internally) was based upon a surplus IG-100 MagnaGuard chassis and hoped that by combining it with a modified protocol unit, a deadly combination would be created (essentially, a combat droid that could easily insert itself into any number of cultures for clandestine missions). Unfortunately, the programming challenges were too great, and when NOVA-1 engineers couldn’t meet the prototype deadline, investors pulled their support and the company quickly went bankrupt. N1-G3L (nicknamed “Nigel” by the supervising engineers) is believed to be the only surviving prototype; mistakenly sold for scrap when the corporate holdings were liquidated, N1-G3L is unique in that a modified Astromech subroutine was installed to bolster mechanical problem-solving skills that plagued the earlier prototypes (they tended to shoot first when they encountered any mission obstacle – be it a security guard, an innocent bystander, or even a duracrete wall). The design showed some promise, but N1-G3L is not waiting to find out. The droid has even taken the initiative to install some custom upgrades. It has proven an ability to evolve to face the harsh challenges the galaxy presents."

Canon DSLR filter configuration..from the XTi and newer models.
Low Pass Filter-1(LPF-1) is the Stock UV/IR Blocking Filter, along with also having the Self Cleaning Piezo element attached to it.
LPF-2 is only a Color Limiting Filter designed to constrict the spectrum reaching the sensor to what "we see"...therefor also cutting out most of the spectrum the silicon sensor is capable of capturing/sensitive to.
Removal/replacement of the LPF-2 filter is how you gain maximum transmission of the Hydrogen Alpha spectrum, which is the 'sought after' spectrum for Astro Imaging since most of the cosmos, or the objects we want to image in the cosmos, are made of Ha(Hydrogen Alpha).
For a Full Spectrum Camera, you will simply remove both stock filters.
This will give you a camera with maximum versatility as it can perform any function you can probably think of...from Daytime IR, 'night vision', Astro, and of course the 'standard daytime' images you buy your camera for in the first place; by simply adding a filter into the system to block UV/IR, and give you a normal WB(white balance).
The kinda stuff that Industrial Light & Magic can IMITATE...but NEVER *DUPLICATE!*

EVette, the autonomous GPS robot, in Summer 2008 configuration. The rear pair of drive wheels have been removed and replaced with a heavy-duty castering wheel. It no longer tracks as straight as it did in 4-wheel drive configuration.
In development since 2005, EVette was designed for the Mini Grand Challenge competition, hosted by Penn State University Abington Campus. In this competition, a robot must navigate a meandering path, then go offroad in the last segment, with only 6 GPS waypoints given 24 hours before the contest.
Most competitors used laptop computers and camera vision systems to navigate the path and identify obstacles and offroad conditions. EVette uses only sonar sensors and a newly added low-cost vision system for all of its obstacle avoidance and path navigation, as well as GPS and compass for waypoint planning and identification.
The autonomous 4-wheel drive skid steer robot is propelled by 2 Power Wheels Corvette drive trains. The master controller is a PIC16F877. A Parallax BS2P reads and
processes compass and GPS data. A PIC16F627 reads a 2 axis accelerometer and drives a unique self leveling gimbal that keeps the compass level. A Winbond controller directs the music and speech subsystem. Finally, the new vision module is controlled by a PIC 16Fxxx which reads the vision array, processes the data, and communicates with the master controller.

The site configuration and weather are now making it difficult to photograph the work but I am determined to continue to document the project. A hi-vis jacket and the remarkable lens on my beautiful camera seem to be the necessary tools.
After a slow start, a sudden, impressive burst of progress has seen the former railway embankment lowered to a level whereby it can, eventually, carry BRT under Newgate Lane and, I think, a new bridge.
Even if you are not interested in BRT, plant enthusiasts will enjoy some of the pictures in this series.
