A soil climate monitoring station in the cold, dry desert of the Wright Valley of Antarctica at the base of Bull Pass (elevation of 150 m). The soil is an Anhyorthel.

Anhydrous conditions occur in very cold deserts. Precipitation tends to be very low, generally < 50 mm per year. Consequently, the soil is very dry (generally < 3% moisture, by weight).

clearing quickly. (note... 989 and rising slowly by 10.20). Thinking of devising the mcgonical scale to assess and report in greater depth and with greater accuracy on the condition of dampness... ness. Wet start to the day. 12C. Now sunny as I report. Wind is around a 3/ gentle breeze on the Beaufort Scale... (ie defined as leaves and small twigs constantly moving, light flags extended). Beaufort scale developed to report on sea conditions but invaluable for balloonists. Certainly a great drying hour for Ms McGonical as I use a 21stC travel towel in support of her own methodical preening. Should really have used the flash for a half decent image. Another time.

11:05:15: Wrexham trip next. Post-election,I am struck by the lack of real ambition evident amidst our 'political elite' who must continue to present to want to be elite and be seen to lead rather than open up to being self-aware. The new PM today, despite the blow and bluster that defies Beaufort scale as he talks on Europe sounds terrified. There are other ways to lead such as being exemplary I can see... by being exemplary... sustainable... responsible and creative in guiding and satisfying ambitions and needs. That is why we are still known as h sapiens. Coincidentally there has just been an excellent report on "Weather Conditions" on BBC Radio 4 (ends 10.00am). Worth listening to on-line. So I've changed title from "soggy conditions."

The road back to Fairbanks was icy, but the clouds were taking a break today, and the sun had come out. Everything turned pretty.

I was wondering as we drove out this way whether I'd ever see this end of the road again. It's always a weird thing to think you're in a place you'll only ever be this one time in all your life, and once you leave it behind, you'll never see any of it again. I liked Chena Hot Springs -- especially the "hot springs" part -- but I don't know that I liked it enough to think we'll make the effort to come back out here someday. Hell, I went 18 years thinking I'd never come back to Alaska, and while I did eventually make it, Alaska's a much larger target than Chena Hot Springs. This is probably it for this view. But I'd be willing to bet now that there will be other Alaskan views in my future. There will be another trip someday. Just not here specifically.

Even though the weather was misty and cloudy, it was relatively warm for Norway in October and we thought the fall colors could really stand out amongst the grey rocks, cloudy sky, and bright green moss.

Less than a week after a foot of snow fell in Boulder, with a couple 70-degree days in-between, an even bigger snowstorm hit Boulder. The heavy, wet snow did a lot of tree damage but with spring break on, plenty of people were free to sled down the hill at Scott Carpenter Park.

TreeZone construction started at Inverdruie on January 5th 2010 in the freezing conditions experienced by us all.

Brutal conditions for photography here. Direct overhead, nuclear sunlight, not a cloud in sight. Windy, oh so windy, moving subjects. Grr. What to do - you can either not shoot at a place you will be once in your life or you can just take some snapshots to remember that day. Here are my snapshots.

Photo taken on New Island in the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas). This small island has a 3 penguin species nesting on it, a Black-browed Albatross colony, and great subantarctic scenery.

Does anyone else out there think that nobody should be discharged from hospital to live in these conditions, with no help of any kind, and a canula still in their arm?

Sunday.

And a day that began with sunshine and fairly calm conditions which would turn to gales and heavy rain in the afternoon, so if we were going to do anything, it would have to be early.

So it was that soon after half eight we were heading to Samphire Hoe to get some steps in and for me to look for orchid rosettes.

Jools had come down on Saturday, and found the place jammed due to the sunny weather, but on a now dull and increasingly breezy Sunday morning, just us and the dogwalkers about, as the sea wall was too dangerous for fishing.

I walked up and down the metalled track beside the railway, looking hard, but I saw no sign of an orchid. The ground had been churned up well by the cattle, and the orchids will survive that, but not one rosette to be seen.

And just gorse in flower, the Carline Thistle seen was last summer's gone to seed.

After 90 minutes we were back at the car and driving home. Jen was watching the Australian Open final, so we let her be, instead going home so I could prepare lunch, peel and soak the potatoes for lunch of toad in the hole, roast potatoes and steamed veg.

Toad in the hole is the bastard offspring of Yorkshire pudding and sausages: simply a Yorkshire with sausages in it. And I had thought on Friday how good it would be to have toad in the hole over the weekend.

The sausages were rolled up sausage meat, just like Grandad used to make. The batter had to be prepared the day before, so to rise properly.

I don't know how to describe the flavours of toad in the hole, roast potatoes, vegetables and gravy, but the flavours, textures, especially with the crispy ends of the pudding and the superb roast potatoes made it a delight.

Just what I had wanted.

Only problem was to stay awake during the afternoon. The first half of the Palace v Brentford game was 1-0 at half time, but when I awake from my slumber, it was 1-2.

Villa v West Ham was underwhelming to be honest, ended 1-1.

By which time the weekend was nearly over with, and with hot cross buns for supper and a fresh, strong brew, it was soon time for bed, and the week ahead beckoned.

here in L.A. It had to be photographed.
