The humour continues - when providing the weather conditions for the Athletics last night the description was "British" - ie expect absolutely anything.

Even though the weather was misty and cloudy, it was relatively warm for Norway in October and we thought the fall colors could really stand out amongst the grey rocks, cloudy sky, and bright green moss.
Description:
Cory's Shearwater is a large seabird. Diagnostic yellow bill usually only visible at close range. Look for warm pale brown upperparts and white belly. Also note little contrast between the brown head and white throat (compare with distinct capped appearance of Great Shearwater). Slower wingbeats than other shearwaters, especially in calm conditions; wings looked pushed forward in flight. Forms mixed flocks with other shearwaters offshore.
This species as a stronger flight action than most shearwaters, with slower wingbeats and prolonged glides, sometimes soaring high above waves. Nesting on islands in the Mediterranean Sea and eastern Atlantic, it regularly visits waters off the east coast of North America. Although a few get as far north as Canada, the species is most common off the southeastern US states.
Feeding Behaviour.
Forages mainly by plunging into water from just above surface, and by seizing items while swimming. Often may feed at night. Scavenges near fishing boats; may feed in association with whales or large predatory fish, which drive schools of small fish to the surface.
Eggs
One. White. Incubation is by both sexes, 52-56 days. Young: Both parents feed young, visiting at night. Eventually young is deserted and goes to sea on its own. Period from hatching to departure probably about 90 days.

Diet
Mostly fish, squid, and crustaceans. Diet not well known; fish eaten include herring and sand lance. At times may feed mainly on squid. Also eats crabs and other crustaceans, and on scraps and offal around fishing boats.
Nesting
Breeds in colonies on islands; on large islands, colonies may be several miles inland. Breeding season mostly from March to October. Activity in colonies mainly late afternoon to dawn; where persecuted by humans or other predators, may visit colonies only at night. In courtship, members of pair sit close together on ground, nibbling at each other's head and bill. Nest: Site is in burrow up to 3' long, or in crevice in rocks, sometimes on ground under thick scrub. Nest is simple pile of pebbles, shells.

The conditions for photographing birds in my garden have been far from ideal over the last couple of days. The sky has been very overcast and for some reason fewer birds have been coming to the feeders too. This afternoon I decided to try some photographs with a high ISO, 3200. The only bird that obliged me by staying still long enough to capture was this Robin. The results are not wonderful but I feel that this picture could produce a reasonable 7 by 5 inch print.

Our cleanups are part of an ongoing effort clean the entire stream by 2014 in preparation for the War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebration. (Bread and Cheese Creek has been noted as one of the possible highlighted location on the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail) The creek played a rather significant part in the Battle of North Point which took place on September 12, 1814. Both the American and British Troops camped along its banks. It is rumored that the young heroes Daniel Wells (19) and Henry McComas (18) used the stream channel to sneak up on British General Robert Ross killing him with their muskets before being killed in return fire. This important part of our history should not be left the eyesore it currently is.
Remember, there plenty of ways for volunteers to participate. We will need every type of person of every ability level to contribute and assist with the Clean Up. Though it is true we will need people to dig out shopping carts and haul trash to the dumpsters, we can use people to run water, food, tools, and trash bags (both empty and full) to individuals in the creek. People to sort recyclables from the debris removed. People will be needed to work the grills as well as many other less strenuous activities. We are also authorized to sign-off on Community Service and Service Learning Hours for students. The more people we have, the easier the work will be for everyone. Please feel free to pass this information on to other who might be interesting in helping as well. As my grandfather always said, “Many hands makes the work light”. We run our cleanups as a family event with all age groups welcome by developing plenty of ways for volunteers to participate.

Observing rainy conditions for the first time in over a month! This weather system was nothing big like what we typically see this time of year, but we will take all the rain drops we can possibly get at this point... Pics taken from around San Jose, CA. (Saturday, March 7, 2020)
*Weather update:
RAIN AT LAST! A frontal system was moving thru Northern California this day. The offshore frontal system was splitting apart & the southern portion was to end up as a low pressure area off the Southern California coast. This low was to move slowly eastward & across the southern half of California Tuesday, unfortunately missing us. Today, the Bay Area was to be partly cloudy to cloudy with scattered rain showers, our first rain in over a month's time! By Sunday & Monday, we were to see bands of clouds moving northward from the offshore low. There were to be isolated showers with the snow level remaining near 4000 feet. After a lull for much of the new week, by Friday, another low pressure area was to drop southward along the Canadian coast & across NorCal. This system was to bring clouds & more scattered showers to the region late Friday thru Sunday... Yet, no big storms but at least the weather isn't entirely, ridiculously dry like last February...
