on May 1, 1886, the American Working Class ~nder the Federation of Organized Trades and Unions launched a massive struggle 'to ensure 8-hour Working Dar which brought together more than 360,000 workers. They were faced with severe repression. On May 3r , in Haymar.ket in Chicago, the pollee opened fire on the demonstration of the McCormick Reaper Works, killing six workers. This police brutality, led to the protests gaining strength and workers mobilizing themselves in large numbers. The police advanced their repressjve measures and began to pick up the leadership of the workers. After a kangaroo trial, 8 of them were convicted. Among them, Albert Parsons, August Spies, George Engel and Adolph Fischer were sentenced to death. While Louis Lingg was also handed out the same punishment, he gave up his life In prison. After massive upheaval of the workers. the remaining three namely Michael Schwab, Samuel F alden, and Oscar Neebe were freed. Today, when the Working Class around the world is continuing its struggle for their rights, especially in the aftermath of the Financial Crisis leading to more unemployment, wherein the workers are rallying with other sections against soaring prices as result of neoliberal policies, imperialist onslaughts, for more and equal wages, better working conditions and for unionization, it is time to reassert the revolutionary legacy of May Day. .
working class movement in India has performed a heroic role in the struggle against imperialism and for democratic rights. In the freedom struggle against the British imperialism the working class movement played a glorious role and made countless sacrifices. Even after independence, the working class movement has taken up relentless struggles to ensure minimum wages, 8 hour working day, enactment and implementation of labour laws and sociat security measures. Gain~ made on these counts in the post-independence period have been fought and won .
· through the collective action of the organized workin'g class movement. In the age of Neoliberalism there is an imminent threat of these gains being reversed as the ruling classes have launched a systematic assault on the working class movements and workers' rights. .
Neoliberal economic policies have directly hit the working class and working class movement in India. Labour laws are being rampantly violated by the corporates and far from enforcing the labour laws, the government has become totally subservient to corporates and in the name of labour reforms attempts are being made to do away with the labour laws. Recently, the Manmohan Singh government with the help of BJP has enacted the Labour Laws Amendment Act, which exempts employers of establishments employing up to 40 persons from the obligations of almost all the basic labour laws. This means that nearly 78% of the workforce in the manufacturing sector will be out of the purview of the basic labour laws. Contractualization and Outsourcing have become the order of the day, not only in the private sector, but also in the public sector undertakings and government departments, both central and state. Millions of workers are.at present employed as contract workers in regular jobs and to perform work of permanent nature. These workers are paid miserably low wages and have no social security benefits, thus creating a situation where two types of workers work side by side in an enterprise doing the same job but getting highly unequal wages and benefits, thereby creating rifts among the workers. There has been an increase in the home-based informal production units, where workers and especially women workers work in miserable working conditjons and poor wages. Soaring prices of the essential commodities under the UPA regime and its complete apathy to the plight of the working classes facing the brunt of price rice by not universalizing PDS shows its blatantly anti-worker anti-people character. This is further compounded by the regime of Scams and loot of public money to bring colossal losses to exchequer. Whether it is the Commonwealth Games scam, the 2G Spectrum scam or ISRO-Antrix scam, massive corruption has also happened by the swindling of the money earned by the toiling masses of our country, which have been paid as taxes. .
Successive governments-be it BJP-led NDA or Congress-led UPA-have launched attacks on the democratic rights of the working classes in their attempts to weaken the working class movements. Whether it is Honda in Gurgaon and Liberty in Karnalln Haryana or Hyundai, Foxconn, Build Your Dreams In Chennai, or Hero cycles in Ludhiana or Mahindra and Mahlndra in NasJk, mass-scale victimization and repression are let loose on the workers when they try to organize and demand implementation of their basic rights. Judicial encroachment on the right to strike is a glaring example of how the state seeks to trample the democranc rights of the working classes. The elitist Media in our country has also time and again shown its class bias by ·deriding and vilifying genuine struggles of the working class. The government's crackdown on the ongoing strike of Air .
India pilots, aided by judicial over-reach and a vilification campaign run by the Corporate Media, is a prime example on this crackdown on unionization. .
In spite of this onslaught of the ruling classes, the working class movement in India has shown remarkable resilience to fight against neoliberal policies and to protect the hard-earned rights, for which it has fought and won. .
·The massive mobilization of the workrng class under the leadership of united trade unions on 23rd February-which was thoroughly bl~cked out by the Indian media-has again emphasized the leading role of the working class movement and thetr struggles. SFI salutes the working class movement across the world on the historic occasion of May Day and calls upon the student community to stand shoulder to shoulder with the working class movement and strengthen our resolve in the struggle against exploitation and for democratic rights. .

Thunderstormy conditions in San Jose, CA today. I was heading out to chase some thunderstorms in the valley once again! What’s crazy was that I almost didn’t venture out since there was really nothing noteworthy on radar. But a thunderstorm so-happen to drift over my area in San Jose around noon with hail and thunder so that finally motivated me to head out lol. As a reward, heavy rain, hail, thunder and lightning were all witnessed on this outing! The same storm system that had drenched us with widespread rain just the day prior was now ushering in a cold, unstable airmass (behind its main cold front), helping to destabilize the atmosphere to help fuel thunderstorm development, especially for the Central Valley. As for my storm chase, an area of t-storms had formed in the rural areas north of Los Banos around the 1 p.m. hour and then drifted down towards Chowchilla (where I witnessed the 1st encounter of the storm’s deluge of hail) and then continued (while intensifying still) southeast towards Madera/Fresno. Lots of hail and lightning was observed while traveling down the 99 towards Madera, while trying to get ahead of the storm. But due to traffic (likely due to the storm), I lost the chase to the storm and couldn’t get ahead of it anymore so I just exited on one of the exits to take in the lightning the storm was still putting out. Then I continued south a bit more and stopped around the northern areas of Madera to refuel at the Valero and had a quick snack (while also enjoying the winter wonderland of hail that the strong t-storm had left in its wake). As quickly as the storms came, skies turned bright and sunny again as I ate my snack and updated my socials lol. As it neared 4pm and after resting up, I went on the long journey back north towards home. I’ve never seen the air so clear… It has certainly been a while since I’ve chased in the valley. Installation of a test well to determine existing geothermal groundwater conditions for the Beverly Library’s new Geothermal HVAC system. The City of Beverly has launched a project to decarbonize Beverly’s main library and improve building performance, air quality, and service to community members as a cooling center in the summer. After 30 years, the current HVAC equipment has reached the end of its useful life and is in need of replacement. The condensing unit serving one of the Roof-Top Units (RTUs) providing ~40% of the cooling for the library has already failed. In mid March this one test well was drilled to confirm the existing geothermal groundwater conditions. The project is expected to be completed in Summer 2024. Using a phased construction approach, the library expects to remain operational during construction. In 2021, the City ran a study to understand and compare HVAC replacement options. The City evaluated the cost and performance of replacing the existing system with similar equipment, as well as alternative options such as air-source heat pumps and ground-source heat pumps. The City found that a ground-source heat pump system, or a geothermal system, was the best option to reduce the most energy use and eliminate on-site fossil fuel use by removing gas-fired equipment. Geothermal technology makes it possible to heat and cool the library using the Earth’s naturally stable below-ground temperature–a renewable energy source. In Resilient Together, the City’s climate action plan, the City committed to leading by example through adoption of smart, clean, net zero technology in existing and new municipal buildings. Buildings are the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, and this project is expected to remove gas entirely (21,000 therms to zero) and reduce HVAC electricity usage. This helps the City meet its goal of reducing its carbon footprint by 50% by 2030.
