March 2011. My step-mother is a teacher. She borrowed this badger from the library to show her children, so it was in the house for one night. My father took it out the box and insisted I do something with it. I lay down next to it and an idea occurred. A quick trip to the attic and our old Playstation was recovered for this very simple and loving image.

I'm having a glass of sherry before lunch and am playing "Bubble Cloud" on my iPad. This is a strangely compulsive game to which I was introduced by my daughter. Meanwhile, in the kitchen, the eggs for my salad are on the boil.

This cake was made for a Playstation/iphone/football lovin' teenage boy - does this describe anyone you know?

The early versions of Star Raiders used both the keyboard and the joystick. The later version made for the Atari 2600 in 1982 came with this touch pad controller which was intended to be used instead of the keyboard.

Saw that slogan (or possibly "protect me...") on a t-shirt at the farmer's market the other weekend. Sort of rang true.

Not sure about the font. 'System' looks like crap big. Of course, that's kind of the point.

An intentional reference to my earlier shot.

For the record, that's 6,593,280 pixels of screen real estate. Though the photo-frame doesn't really count I guess.

Prior to 1976, Atari produced arcade games and home Pong games. To raise capital for the production of a new cartridge gaming system, Bushnell sold Atari to Warner Communications. He was named Chairman of the Board. After disagreements over the direction the company should take, Bushnell left Atari in 1978. There followed numerous re-structures, name changes and buy-outs, and Atari is now a subsidiary of the French holding company Atari SA, formerly known as Infogrames Entertainment. In 2010, it was announced that Bushnell would join the company's Board of Directors.

Here's number two!

This is possibly a bit too obscure for most people. Videogames are going to play a big part in these fan-arts, they're as much to blame for my complacency as they are to blame for my creativity and inspiration. I've played them since I can remember and Alex Kidd was one of my first memories of that - best part was it came free, built into the Sega Master System - how convenient is that?

I always thought this Alex guy was a bit of a dick. Part of the game involved playing Rock, Paper, Scissors against guys that literally had hands for heads. Obviously, this was all they lived for - I mean they had hands for heads, what else could they accomplish in life other than winning Rock, Paper, Scissors? Opening massive cans of beans for arm-less giants maybe?

Alex, some little dude with freakish powers of appendage embiggenment and killer burns would come along on his hyper-cool motorbike and beat them at their own game, thus KILLING THEM. What a creep!

As I said last week, I want to experiment often, so this week I decided to try a traditional comic feel. I'm planning on making my own comics at some point and I'm happy with this as proof I could maybe do it.

Christopher Strachey was a teacher at the private Harrow school who spent time at the National Physical Laboratory learning to use computers. He knew Alan Turing from his time at King's College, Cambridge and came to Manchester to use the Ferranti Mark computer.

Computer games

Strachey undertook some remarkable challenges writing a program that could play a complete game of draughts (checkers) called ENTER that first ran on the Ferranti Mark in 1951. His program presented the game visually as it progressed on one of the machine's display tubes, making it the first example of a computer video game.

see Programming ENTER: Christopher Strachey‘s Draughts Program www.computerconservationsociety.org/resurrection/res60.htm#f

Computer music

The Ferranti Mark had a `hoot` function. that was used to sound a prompt when an action was required. Turing realised that this could be reprogrammed to make different notes and created a routine that played a note of a specified pitch.

Strachey wrote programs using Turing's the music code to play music. His first success was the National Anthem, to be played at the end of a game of draughts. The earliest existing recording of computer-generated music was recorded in 1951 by the BBC, in which the Ferranti Mark can be heard playing the National Anthem, Baa Baa Black Sheep and In the Mood.

See Restoring the first recording of computer music

blogs.bl.uk/sound-and-vision/2016/09/restoring-the-first-recording-of-computer-music.html

Love letters

Like Turing, Strachey was fascinated by the possibilities that computers offered. In particular, he thought about the application of computers within the arts and wrote a program for the Ferranti Mark computer that would generate love letters, one of the first examples of computational linguistics. While the resulting letters are unlikely to stir the emotions, it was a remarkable achievement to write a program on a machine with such limited power.

The challenges that the early computer pioneers attempted are an indication of the mood of the times that the newly invented computers were exciting, powerful machines of unknown and maybe limitless utility that would change the world.
