Açaí palms (Euterpe oleracea) are native to the Amazon equatorial estuary. Both Belém, Pará and Macapá, Amapá have healthy stands of this palm. Sambazon sources its açaí pulp from the Macapá area.

I seem to remember a few years ago that because of a territorial spat whereby Stagecoach spread south westwards from their traditional old Devon General area, First retaliated by moving into the Torbay open top market. Here in the summer of 2007 one of their converted ex Bristol Roe bodied Leyland Olympians A813 THW heads into Torquay with a less than impressive load.
Three unknown young ladies, apparently members of some private Cheerleading group, were apparently taking a break from competition at a nearby convention venue when they started posing for friends in the Centennial Olympic Fountain, Atlatna, Georgia
This shot comes from Newton, NJ. A last minute trip Tuesday night of last week resulted in a bit of an alternate route due to all of the flooding from Hurricane Irene. We passed a good deal of traffic headed in the opposite direction that was being detoured off of Rt 287 (part of this road was completely destroyed) but ended up headed back to Toms River late enough that we didn't get stuck in any on our way home. It was a new moon so the foreground was lit with a flash light and some tricky techniques that I hadn't tried before. Overall, I'm definitely happy with how it turned out. I'm hoping to make it back to the field during the day, but I definitely need to check how late in the season sunflowers are in bloom until. Hope everyone had a nice weekend!
Thanks to everyone that made it out to my opening in Asbury Park at The Gallery 13. I couldn't have been any happier with how everything went. Thank you so much!
also called chainsaw racing.
Wood chopping competitions have upped the excitement by adding post splitting using a chain saw - as seen last weekend at Stroud's Brick and Roilling Pin festival. A log approx 1/2 metre thick is partitioned into about 10 posts using a chainsaw followed by a crowbar and wedge to separate the posts from the central strainer post.

This is a scene during the robotics competition sponsored by the ECE department at BYU. Robots chased each other around the oval track to see which was the fastest.

Macroalgae (Halimeda sp.) fights with lettuce coral (Agaricia tenuifolia) amongst other species for space on the Belizean coral reef at Calabash Caye. The presence of macroalgae is a sign of poor reef health, though a resurgence in algal grazers such as the long-spined sea urchin (Diadema antillarum) is a step in the right direction for the restoration of the world's second largest reef
I know almost nothing about flowering plants. However, it appears to me that clusters of flower buds on hollyhock bushes are in intense competition to see who gets to bloom first. Besides the bloom and buds shown large in my photo, the same kind of competition can be seen, in an earlier stage, below the group featured.
Please set me straight if you know more about this seeming "bud competition" in a confined space.
NB - I continue to be amazed at the detail my favorite editing software, GraphicConverter, can tease out of a photo taken with my ancient iPhone 4S, even after cropping square. Click to look close and see all the scattered pollen grains.
Location: Over-the-fence hollyhock bush, private garden, Moostal, Riehen BS Switzerland.
