Here's an event to try to capture better in the coming year - some tiny fast-moving flies that seemed to be sparring around and under a rotting branch. Perhaps they were males fighting over females - reviewing the picture after the fact I noticed there were holes in the branch with something/someone in them.
Unlike the petrie dish mating videos online, the flies were spread out over and under this downed branch and it was impossible to predict where they might be in order to focus.
I want to try it again with a tripod, good lighting...and of course better camera settings.

The annual family Christmas cake competition, reaching a record size of 8 entries. Mine is the 14cm high, 25cm wide monster at the far right, taking out third place. Next along the back row is my aunt's first place winner, and next along again is my father's, taking second. My big mistake was trying to cook such a large fruit cake in a slow-combustion stove with relatively little experience doing such things, resulting in a burned top. Otherwise I'm sure I could have made at-least second place... ;-)
