Well that went by fast haha!

This year I was privileged to make many new friends here on Flickr and be 'Explored' twice in a month. This year has also seen Sicily grow from a humble beginning to a near presentable project as well as my scene compatibilities grow to levels which I never thought possible. I started the year with less than 200 followers, and now I am about to reach 400. I have also seen a recent surge in the popularity of WWII Italians in the Community, something I thought would never happen. I cannot tell you how overjoyed I am! Thanks all for a great year!

To begin the New Year, I will be filling 'the void' of which I have wanted to for a while: Obtain a custom, detailed Major Bonacelli fig to take to conventions and use for my Flickr Icon. Any good customizers out there are welcome to FM me if they wish to undertake the hard task! Lol! ;-)

Inside Hertz Chamber by European Space Agency

A view inside ESA’s cavernous Hertz chamber for radio-frequency testing of satellites, which will be on show to the public during this Sunday’s ESA Open Day in the Netherlands.

Isolated from the outside world with radio- and sound-absorbing internal walls, the chamber simulates the boundless conditions of space.

Its hybrid nature makes it unique: Hertz can assess radio signals from antennas either on a local ‘near-field’ basis or as if the signal has crossed thousands of kilometres of space, allowing it to serve all kinds of satellites and antenna systems.

This photo was taken during a visit to ESA’s technical centre in Noordwijk, the Netherlands by artist and photographer Monica Alcazar-Duarte: “Once the door of the chamber was opened I was presented with a landscape that could have come from a science fiction film. I know this is not the case of course but the room was incredibly inspiring.”

ESA’s Open Day in the Netherlands takes place on Sunday 8 October .

Mercy is underway off the coast of Southern California completing Dynamic Interface Testing, where the ship’s aviation facilities will be evaluated for compatibility with the V-22 Osprey and MH-60 Seahawk, and establish launch and recovery windows in adverse weather conditions. Mercy recently returned to its homeport in San Diego from a regular overhaul in Portland, Ore., where improvements were made to its flight deck to support multiple aircraft platforms. Now branded 'CityBeam' and re-painted into Southeastern's blue liver, 707001 makes a brief return to 'home turf' while working 5Z07 from Slade Green Depot to Wimbledon Park Depot.

The class 707 was delivered new to South West Trains entering traffic from 2017 with the fleet of 30 units shortly passing to South Western Railway who announced their replacement. While 12 are still retained on the South Western due to widely publicised delays with their replacement stock, the remaining 18 units have migrated to Southeastern.

Due to issues with the compatibility of the wheel lathe at Slade Green with these units, they are currently still receiving lathe attention at their old home depot of Wimbledon Park, requiring occasional moves between the two depots.

On this occasion it is 707001 which is making the transfer for lathe attention, and is pictured on platform 20 within the former International terminal at Waterloo.

Wow, I'm impressed that's the least I can say.

The trailer was amazing, the tree house gameplay, amiibo compatibility, WOLF LINK COMPANION, everything in general was amazing. The open world aspect of it is awesome it's like Skyrim but Zeldafied, Nintendo has stepped up their "game" with this one and I just can't wait. The amiibo open up so many possibilities! I'm just so hyped for this game! If you were/are one of the people that lost hope in Nintendo, just wait and see. I can understand why it's been taking them awhile. Anyways those are my thoughts on the E3 presentation for Zelda.

Lego 1:38 Union Pacific Big Boy by Dennis Glaasker

When it comes down to scale modeling with Legos a lot has happened over the last years. Its more and more recognized as a true scale modelers medium, and I think that is great. About three years ago I decided to build more different things then only the trucks that I had built so far. I built Harley Davidsons, Hot rods, and started with trains.

After the two big 1:16 scaled American diesels, I thought it would be nice to have something dynamic for events: A true scale locomotive on actual Lego rail gauge. I opted for the Union Pacific Big Boy: (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Pacific_Big_Boy).

There are already many models of this type of locomotive but I wanted one for myself as it has always appealed to me since I was a kid. I did some math calculating back from the Lego track gauge, coming to a 1:38 scale.

Building such a big locomotive to run on Lego rail is a bit of a challenge. I had to deal with the following facts:

-The standard Lego curve is too tight for such a long locomotive. Therefor I choose the Radius 104 aftermarket rail.

-The wheels are not existing as such. In diameter 45 mm there is nothing available from the shelf. I worked together with Jaap Kroon to design and 3D print a set of custom wheels. To make it look more realistic I chose to add the valve gear as well. We designed the valve gear with Lego compatibility in the back of our heads. It should not become too fine compared to the bricks.

-Power. This thing is heavy. And it has a lot of batteries to add to the weight. The solution was three genuine Lego Power Functions XL engines directly geared to the axles of the tender. I chose the tender to push the locomotive as it was much more convenient to house the engines and batteries there. In order to get all the ‘juice’ to the engine I chose a regular RC Battery pack and the Tamiya connector was hooked up to a PF cable. To control it I mounted a SBrick, so there is no restriction of battery power in the whole system.

-Lights. I wanted to add some realistic lights as well. Initially I wanted a smoke generator but the proper 5V kit was not available anymore, so I dropped it (for now). Rob from Brickstuff.com supplied a very cool lightkit for the locomotive.

It includes a dimmer for the contour lights. All in all there is about 2 meters of wire in the locomotive. It took me about 2.5 months to finish.

Is there anywhere else where the contrast between old and new can be this stark? Yet it's so much a function of the everyday life that it becomes an eminently unique character of this place.

Been thinking about a lightweight high performing “slowish” basic lens (FF) kit although lens manufacturers typically steer away from making such options available simply because they prefer to sell us higher margin premium options like pro-spec f2.8 zoom and f1.2 prime lenses.

1. High quality lightweight hyper-wide prime 14mm or 15mm f4.5 with good close focus and can take screw on filters. As and when you have the occasional need to go really wide. No need for a fast aperture which only adds unnecessary weight and cost. Voigtlander has decent manual focus primes in this range but these are not great in the corners especially on high resolution sensors.

2. High quality lightweight ultrawide-standard zoom in 20-60mm f4.0. 20mm (not 24mm) is properly wide without getting too wide, a 20-60mm zoom will minimize lens change as opposed to using both an ultra-wide zoom and a standard zoom. Panasonic S has a decent quality lens in their S 20-60mm f3.5-5.6. Carrying 2 cameras to minimise lens change just adds on even more weight. Incidentally Tamron just announced the lightweight (365g) 20-40mm f2.8 Di III VXD (A062), personally would have preferred a longer albeit slower zoom lens in the longer 20-60mm range for E mount, even 20-50mm would suffice.

3. Good quality, relatively lightweight Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 Di III VXD already exists, hopefully this will get a V2 upgrade with lens IS and teleconverter compatibility. This Tamron weighs in at 815g, in contrast Nikon’s Z 70-200mm f2.8 VR S is 1,440g!

4. High quality 50mm f1.8 prime, options readily available. Personally quite happy with my FE 55mm f1.8 ZA.

So a better Voigtlander FE 15mm f4.5 APSH (IV?) update to pair with perhaps Tamron FE 20-40mm f2.8 VXD and FE 55mm f1.8 ZA plus a Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 (VR) update, this could be a more than decent lightweight kit.
