With nights getting longer, I decided it was finally time to go out again for some night photos and here is LG71DJO seen at Sloane Square. What is interesting about this batch of new buses is that they have a pantograph which can draw quite a decent amount of charge to allow for easy(ier) charging and probably for forward compatibility if charging was to be built roadside. These do not have a LED blindset, however, which seems to be the norm now with new vehicles.
Old glass, the Pentax "Gold" jpeg profile, and a scene I found interesting. I really like the feel of this photo.
One thing I love about Pentax is the backwards compatibility. This lens is a pre-M, non-SMC, early Takumar lens. It's a treat to use on a modern DSLR. It's cool that Pentax even offered an M42 to K-mount adapter, making it possible to adapt nearly any Pentax lens to modern K-mount cameras. There are even 6x7 and 645 to K adapters out there! Anywho, that's my fan boy speech for today, lol.

Consciousness may involve thermodynamic or quantum processes that lend the impression of living moment by moment. According to a certain physicist, time is not real and what we regard as the time is no more than changes that lead to the illusion of time.

In a rather strange move, Nikon just released a rebranded 1st Gen Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens in Z mount at $1,199.95, the lens diagrams for the mirrorless Z and E mount versions are identical with identical MTF and minimum focus distance.
Like some Matrix “black cat” deja vu, Olympus (after being spun off from the Olympus Parent Co) did the same thing previously with the remounted 100-400mm f5-6.3 IS which was derived from Sigma’s older DSLR version of the same lens rather than the newer mirrorless 100-400mm DN version while asking for a price way in excess of the original Sigma DSLR lens!
The newer Sony E mount Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 G2 is currently available for $899 and the superseded version (now rebranded Z version) was released back in 2018 at $800. This makes the rebranded Z mount version 50% (+$400!) more expensive than the 2018 E mount version! Heck, the rebranded Z version is even ⅓ more expensive than the newest 2021 Tamron G2 version! Adding insult to injury, the remounted Z lens won’t get Tamron’s much longer 5 years warranty.
More choice is great but it’s not good to fleece one’s loyal customers so blatantly. The issue is not about who actually made the lens but rather Nikon charging 50% more for a lens that has already been replaced by a newer G2 version which is way, way too much just for native AF compatibility!!
As expected, the usual Nikon Z-ealot fanbois shills are out in full force with hyperbolic rationalization and attempts to warp space-time by suggesting that the Z mount version has some magical secret Nikon sauce for better performance, steering discussions well away from the ridiculous 50% premium for a superseded model! Ludicrous mental gymnastics such as outright denial that it’s the same lens, hallucinating possible addition of Nikon lens coatings or AF motors or that Leica does the same with rebranding Sigma lenses hence this is kosher…..
Nikon Z-ealots were already trying to spin that the Z 24-120mm f4 S is optically superior just because the VR mechanism was omitted! Tamron typically leaves out VR in their mirrorless lenses, perhaps the new Z 24-120mm f4.0 S was also designed by Tamron since this was also announced at the same time as the rebranded Z 28-75mm f2.8!?
Really odd behaviour that we seldom see in folks using other brands, perhaps Z-ealot shills live in the Matrix and hence lost all capacity to discern reality from fiction!
When the equivalent Z lens is markedly larger than other brands’ versions, Z-ealots will tell you that Nikon optimized performance over size! Nikon’s largest Z mount diameter supposedly allows for more efficient lens designs but yet they end up with larger, heavier and more expensive lenses, why?
The likely reason is all about financials. Nikon’s market share has been shrinking for years, their mirrorless market share is even smaller and continues to shrink in a shrinking market. In order to generate enough revenue to offset their higher fixed costs (esp R&D) over diminishing unit sales, they have to charge ever higher margins. As such even if the bigger mount diameter hypothetically does allow for more efficient lens designs, whatever design benefits derived must 1st go towards bolstering the Nikon imaging division’s bottomline hence their Z mount lenses ended up bigger, heavier and more expensive at the expense of the consumer! Nikon has always been behind in releasing and updating lenses as well. This is also a direct consequence of a smaller market share even during the DSLR era. Canon will have version III lenses out when Nikon in many cases never even manage to update to version II.
In the UWA category, Canon had EF 16-35mm f2.8L III while Nikon was stuck with their 1st version at f4 from 2010! Fixed aperture standard zoom Canon EF 24-105mm f4 got version II updates vs Nikon’s single generation AF-S 24-120mm f4. Same for Prime lenses, Canon EF 35mm f1.4II while Nikon never went beyond AF-S 35mm f1.4G from 2010. Canon’s superb variable aperture EF 100-400mm II while Nikon never got beyond their disappointing 1st version 80-400mm zoom from 1996. Even with supertele exotics, Canon EF 400mm f2.8, 500mm f4 and 600mm f4 all reached 3rd generation updates while Nikon only managed 2 generations. Now in the mirrorless age, Nikon’s market share is even smaller, very small in fact. No wonder the Nikon shills have been so frantically spewing misinformation in the gear forums!
The Z 800mm f6.3 PF VR announcement is however much more exciting! This is the area where Nikon appears to have real competitive advantage over others.

“Rafi,” he murmured, barely louder than the wind,
“maybe… we don’t have to go on.”
Rafi didn’t look away.
His eyes were clouded with the sediment of Gaza—blood and dust, the memory of ruin.
His father’s body fallen in shadow.
Walls blackened with fire.
Dreams torn apart.
What filled him was not tenderness, but a cold and merciless anger.
“Don’t forget, Amir,” he said, his voice hard as stone.
“In the same place where your mother held you, our fathers were slaughtered.
Those ruins are not just ruins.”
Amir fell silent.
The river’s surface rippled red in the twilight; across the East River, the towers of Manhattan shimmered faintly, blurred at the edges.
Peace and destruction, memory and hatred—
they mingled together in the same wind.
Behind the wire fence, children’s laughter still rang out.
But to the two men, it sounded only like an echo from another world.
The setting sun sank quietly, staining the bridge’s iron joints red as the heat beneath it trembled in the air.
Rainwater pooled in the cracks of the concrete, reflecting a thin sheet of gold.
A faint steam rose from the damp air, and the salt from the harbor clung to Amir’s nose.

“Can’t we stop here?” Amir’s voice wavered into the humid air.
In his mind, he saw again his mother’s hand reaching through a crack in the stone wall—
that small, dirt-stained hand that once touched his cheek.
The desire to return to that warmth still flickered faintly in his chest, like an ember refusing to die.
Rafi clenched his jaw, and spoke through his teeth, his words as brief and cold as a stone cast into the sea.
“Don’t forget, Amir.
If you forget that night, we’ll betray the dead.”
His voice merged with the creak of metal underfoot, irreconcilable with the laughter of children or the cry of cicadas drifting in the distance.
Amir narrowed his eyes, watching the flow of light beyond the railing.
Across the river, windows shimmered in layers—
places where life went on, where dinners were being served,
where children’s laughter and footsteps would echo softly through the gardens.
A deep shadow cut across Rafi’s face.
His fists were clenched, the veins on his hands taut and bright.
“That wish of yours,” he said quietly,
“do you know it might become someone’s gravestone?”
Amir’s gaze fell to a small white rabbit doll at his feet.
It was caked with dust, one eye missing.
Perhaps it belonged to a child who once played beneath this bridge—
or perhaps it had simply wandered here by chance.
Either way, to Amir, that single missing eye seemed like a fleeting glimpse of a world quietly disappearing.
Silence spread between them.
The wind hummed low through the iron beams.
Around them, the world went on moving.
A van door shut.
A parent touched a child’s shoulder.
A bus turned the corner.
Their comrades drew shallow breaths, eyes fixed on the ground or the far horizon.
Without looking back, Amir began walking toward the city beyond the bridge’s shadow.
Behind him came a single breath from Rafi—
a sound that carried the stillness of a corpse.
The summer dusk slowly swallowed the bridge.
The men beneath it remained as faint silhouettes,
poised between the red of sunset and the cold gleam of steel.

His fingers trembled slightly,

and aimed the camera at the mark of “B♭” at the bottom of mellow-echo.net.

家とは呼べないほど崩れかけた場所であっても、その声だけが彼を導いた。瓦礫の上に置かれた布団、壁もない部屋に流れ込む風、それでも母の手が彼の額を撫でるたび、そこは確かに家だった。

橋の下には、アミールとラフィのほかに、数名の仲間たちが散らばって立っている。肩をすくめ、汗を拭いながら地面に視線を落とす者もいれば、鉄梁に手をかけ、遠くの光景をじっと見つめる者もいた。
時折、子どもを待つ親の影と、白い屋根の送迎車が通り過ぎる。
アミールは汗で張り付いたシャツの背中をさすり、橋げたの影に腰を下ろした。
ラフィは少し離れて立った。影は長く伸び、照りつける西日に揺れていた。仲間たちは微動だにせず、息を殺すようにその場にいる。
「ここでやめられないのか」
アミールの声は、蒸し暑い夕暮れの空気に溶けかけた。脳裏には、母が崩れた石壁の隙間から差し出した小さな手が浮かんでいた。母の手はいつも、汚れた掌で彼の頬を撫でてくれた。そこに帰りたいという欲が、胸の奥でまだ微かに温かく息をしている。

そのぬいぐるみは、橋の下で遊んだ遠い誰かのものかもしれない。あるいは単に迷い込んだだけかもしれない。どちらにせよ、アミールにはその欠けた目が、消えていく日常の一瞥に思えた。
沈黙がふたりを隔てた。風が、橋げたの鉄梁を低く鳴らした。
周囲の世界は動き続ける。送迎車の戸が閉まり、親が子の肩を叩く。バスが一台、角を曲がる。仲間たちは微かに息を整え、視線を地面や遠方に巡らせたままだ。
アミールは振り返らず、橋の影から街のほうへ歩き出した。

In the early Conrail days, Conrail and the RF&P instituted a short-lived run-through service between Allentown, Pennsylvania and Richmond, Virginia. The power was typically three RF&P units with a Penn Central leader, necessary for cab signal compatibility on the NEC between Philadelphia and Washington.
Late on an April day, a college buddy and I were shooting the RF&P units in the Bethlehem Engine Terminal when a crew boarded the consist. The engineer approached us and said, “Do you guys want to ride to the other end of the yard?” Soon we were aboard the lead unit, Penn Central SD35 6029, and backing to Steel Tower to cross over onto the ex-CNJ main.
As we approached the light side hump (at that time Allentown had two humps), it looked a little like the “old days”, as we met a D&H train with an ex-LV GP38-2 on the point passing the hump power, which included an ex-LV RS11. I decided to squeeze out a shot in the evening light. The result is a little soft, but I’m guessing that my shutter speed for this hand-held shot aboard a moving locomotive was about 1/15 sec. It’s still a nice reminder of a one-time experience and the long walk back to our car.

Camellia sasanqua is native to the southern regions of Japan, including Shikoku (the island east of the southern part of the largest Japanese island, Honshu), Kyushu (the southern most of the largest 4 Japanese islands), and the Ryukyu Islands (the chain of islands that stretches from Kyushu toward Taiwan).
It has been used as basis for cultivars, similar to C. japonica, but was discovered much later than the latter. While C. japonica had been cultivated centuries earlier, first C. sasanqua varieties only appeared during the Edo period (1600 - 1868). A time when Camellias became fashionable in gardens and in connection with the tea ceremony. Because of its resistance to die-back and its compatibility with many other Camellia species, C. is often used as stock for grafting. I've been lucky to have also seen a Camellia sasanqua seed on this same plant. Click the link if you'd like to see what that looks like.
In Japanese, C. sasanqua is called 山茶花 (literally mountain tea flower)- the Japanese phonetic spelling would be sazanka), which is apt as its, relatively fragrant, flowers are added to teas in order to give them an additional flavour. I've also seen the name 'plum-flowered tea' in a few texts. However, while the flower does have some resemblence to that of plums, I'm somewhat inclined to think this may be a mis-translation that has been copied a number of times. I certainly have not found the equivalent kanji (Chinese characters) in any of the texts, which most texts that mention 'mountain tea', 'mountain tea flower' or similar are usually accompanied by the kanji. I may be wrong, though.

The 2025 9RX Series Is John Deere’s Biggest Tractor Yet
The new 9RX tractors increase productivity by 100 acres per day compared to previous models, according to John Deere.
With a maximum engine power of 830 hp, the Model Year 2025 John Deere 9RX four-track tractor is the company’s most powerful yet.
The 2025 9RX is a ground-up redesign of Deere’s 9RX series for its higher horsepower capabilities to achieve lower operating costs per acre, says Michael Porter, large tractors go-to market manager for John Deere.
With increased performance, the 9RX series enables farmers to eliminate passes, reducing soil compaction, and increasing productivity by 100 acres each day compared with previous models, Porter says. This is based on John Deere’s internal testing, comparing the 2023 9RX 640 tractor pulling a 2680H high-performance disk at 11.9 mph with the new 9RX top-of-the-line 830 tractor pulling the same tool at 13.4 mph, both at maximum power for eight hours a day at 4 inches deep in cornstalks.
Deere offers the 9RX series in three models: the 710, 770, and 830; each number correlates with the tractor’s rated horsepower. The tractors are built with in-line six, 6-cylinder JD18 engines, and 515-gallon fuel tanks. The JD18 is a single-fluid engine (strictly diesel fuel) requiring no diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Deere estimates this can save a farmer up to 800 gallons of DEF per year.
The 9RX series uses the e21, 21-speed transmission with Efficiency Manager. Farmers select a traveling speed, and the transmission shifts and manages RPMs to maintain the speed. Porter says the transmission is quick to accelerate, for a smooth and responsive ride.
An optional triple pump gives the 9RX series a hydraulic flow up to 168 gallons per minute. For implements with high hydraulic needs, Deere can build the engine with optional Intelligent Power Management, adding a 40-hp bump. The 830 can achieve up to 3,123 pound-feet of torque at 1,400 RPM.
The 9RX series has a category 5 drawbar, with a maximum vertical load of 19,000 pounds.
The high power means the tractors can pull double the cart load of previous models, while going 1 mph faster on average, Porter says. This can help reduce refilling time, translating to more time in the field.
The new series has a base weight of 74,000 pounds, with a maximum ballast of 84,000 pounds. John Deere has forgone traditional suitcase-style weights, traded out for forklift-ready mono weights to expedite adding or removing the ballast.

These new four-track 9RX tractors have a 15.2-foot wheelbase, and a 22.3-foot turning radius from the rear axle centerline. The series uses Camso Ag 3500 tracks at 30 inches wide, with 88 inches of tread spacing. Optional Camso Ag 6500 tracks are available at 36 inches wide, with 120 inches of tread spacing.
Cab experience
The 9RX series is built with the new CommandView IV Plus cab, with 15% more floor space compared with previous models, and 20% more visibility on the right side, thanks to the removal of the wheel well.
The new cab suspension system has three degrees of freedom, allowing the cab to pivot independent of the rest of the tractor; the passive air seat provides a smoother ride. The seat in the Select cab package swivels 8° to the left and 40° to the right, while Premium and Ultimate package seats swivel 25° to the left and 40° to the right. Other amenities include a new footrest peg, extra storage for tools, and a cooling box for food and drinks.
Buyers can select from three radio packages, with options including AM/FM radio, auxiliary input jack, USB audio and video inputs, SXM satellite radio, Apple Airplay and Android Auto compatibility, speaker system, Bluetooth microphone, and more. Additionally, farmers can choose from three lighting visibility packages to meet their operational needs.

The 2025 9RX series employs the same built-in technology as Deere’s model year 2024 tractors. This includes an in-cab G5 Plus display, integrated StarFire 7500 receiver, JDLink modem connectivity, and autonomy-ready features.
“The autonomous-ready package offers all the hardware, software, and safety features that we know today will be required for autonomous operation in the future,” Porter says. “This allows the machine to easily convert to a fully autonomous tractor.”

I have bought myself a new camera body (Canon R7) to fit by 70-300 lens. So today went to Arne RSPB reserve for a lesson. The lens is not totally compatible so had to buy a connecting ring as well, so far it seems there is only 1 feature lacking & that is a compatibility issue.
Not many birds around so a variety of subjects trying to get my head around the difference between new & old camera body.

Taken on the last evening of my little trip to Scotland from the "Long loch bridge" without a tripod (a friendly Welsh photographer had offered me to use his, but unfortunately, there was a problem with the compatibility of the shoe!) So I just leaned on the edge of the bridge.

Spacecraft systems are installed and tested under dust free conditions.”
A wonderfully informative excerpt from - I’m sure - an “Apollo Spacecraft [Command/Service Module] News Reference”, issue/version unknown…this probably being found in multiple:
“Final assembly of the command and service modules takes place in a large "clean room," at Downey. When components reach this room, they have already gone through many hours of severe testing.
Checkout and testing at Downey can be separated into three broad categories: component and subassembly, individual subsystem tests during buildup, and integrated system testing. The first is at the component and subassembly level, before the equipment is installed in the spacecraft. The second follows installation on the spacecraft and is a long and complex series of tests involving such major operations as pressure cell testing, continuity checks of all wiring, and testing of each subsystem after installation in the vehicle.
The third category-integrated systems testing-is the final operation at Downey. It is conducted in two phases: "plugs-in" and "plugs-out" checkout in which the command and service module subsystems are operated together through a complete simulated mission. In addition, a manned suit loop test is performed with the flight crew to check the environmental control subsystem and all other crew equipment. The individual and integrated system testing is conducted with acceptance checkout equipment (ACE) similar to that at KSC. This equipment interrogates the spacecraft systems to elicit automatic responses as to their status. The responses are automatically gathered, processed, and displayed to test personnel for immediate evaluation and also are recorded and stored for later detailed analysis. The displays are part of a modular system which allows a staff of engineers to monitor more than 25,600 samples per second of spacecraft test data containing about 1500 separate spacecraft and ground support conditions while the test is being performed. The integrated system tests have a number of objectives: to check the operation of each subsystem under mission conditions and assure that all subsystems work together properly, to verify the electromagnetic compatibility of the subsystems, to assure that all crew equipment functions properly, and to check operation of specific alternate and backup equipment and procedures.
The plugs-in and plugs-out tests are similar. The differences are that the former uses ground power and ACE connected to the spacecraft while the latter uses simulated fuel cell power and the ACE is removed so that responses are sent over spacecraft communications equipment as it would operate during the actual mission.
The spacecraft is prepared for these tests exactly as it would be for actual flight except that special test devices are installed in place of some equipment such as ordnance and expendable items.
In each phase the proper operation and interaction of all spacecraft subsystems are checked. The checkout equipment enables both automatic and manual operations to be performed, so that manual backups and overrides to automatic operations can be evaluated. When the series of testing at Downey has been completed, the spacecraft and its subsystems are considered ready. Before it is delivered to NASA, however, additional tests are performed to be sure that all the crew equipment, and particularly the environmental control subsystem, works properly with an actual suited crew aboard.
All loose crew equipment is stowed aboard the spacecraft in its proper place. Three crewmen don and check out the space suits and check ease of entering and leaving the command module. The flight crew then enters the cabin and checks the operation and manipulation of all crew equipment while in a pressurized suit, in a ventilated suit, and in shirtsleeves. Operation of the environmental control subsystem's suit loop is checked as the final step in the test sequence.
After the manned suit loop test the modules are prepared for shipment. This preparation involves demating, final checkout of pressure vessels and the reaction control subsystem, installation of the aft heat shield, application of a thermal coating to the exterior of the command module, installation of earth landing subsystem components and ordnance, a tumble-cleaning, and weight and balance checks.”
Therefore, based on the above, with what’s transpiring in the photograph & spacecraft 103 history referenced in “APOLLO BY THE NUMBERS: A Statistical Reference”/ NASA SP-2000-4029, this occurred some time between 22 July – 13 August 1968.
So, I don’t know what’s up with the “112968” (a reasonable assumption that it’s a date) on the affixed caption. A three+ month lag between event photographed and its issuance/release date, especially since it’s by the originating organization, is a little curious to me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And, machine printed (typed?) on the verso of the photo (behind the affixed NAR description) is “Story of California - Reject”. So, apparently, this was considered, but not used in some story, article, feature, book? etc.
Note what look like circular lidocaine patches at the CM sidewall/heat shield junction. Although readily visible in photographs of various CMs during construction, I haven’t been able to find a definitive reference/identification to/of their purpose. And, I’m not satisfied with my ignorant assumption that they’re some generic & transient protective covering…of some unidentified something. Ugh.
In fact, the “top one” is actually a double-tap, with one under what I’m assuming to be the protective blue “wrap” around the CM, and the second one placed directly over it, ON the blue wrap.
